While there are some loose ends which aren’t unambiguously explained, here’s my take on the meaning of the episode, of which, there seem to be multiple meanings. I feel, there is a deceptively deep, almost philosophical meaning to this episode. I felt as perplexed as everyone else after my viewing of it, but a comment by someone in another thread provided the key to the meaning of the mysterious woman for me. Which I expand on below. That mysterious woman is Ruby’s future ghost, haunting her living self within this alternate time-line created by the Doctor's clumsy disturbance of the Fairy Circle. The woman also represents something much more terrifying than that. She is death, personified. At least, she personifies Ruby’s death. So, she unintentionally (I believe) scares away everyone who tries to speak to her. Her purpose in the episode is primarily as a metaphor for the eventual death which awaits us all. Stalks us our entire lives, just as it stalks Ruby in the form of the woman. While our own death is rarely at the forefront of daily awareness, neither is it ever far away. You might say, that death is always 73 yards away. Close enough to be visible, but not so close as to be clearly so. The best that we can do is to ignore our self-knowledge that it is always there. Always waiting, and that we will one day, die. Soon, living Ruby simply accepts the woman as an inevitable part of her daily existence. Realizing, that there’s nothing she can do about her anyway, Ruby decides to do something meaningful with her life. Utilizing the mystery woman for an extremely constructive purpose in that endeavor. Until, finally, Ruby is at the end of her life, and the mystery woman manifests closely in her room. Ruby’s death is closely approaching her. In the last moment of life, when the medical monitor in her room that had been reassuringly making a regular beeping sound suddenly starts making that dreadful flatline tone, the woman turns to face Ruby. As she does, Ruby loses all anxiety, and embraces her death with outstretched arms, and a smile of relief. Ruby passes, and then becomes the ghost which had been haunting her. Chills. Throughout life, Ruby has felt abandoned, and isolated. Which is sad enough, but she also ends up dying alone, as well. A feeling, and an ending, for too many of us. Davies appears to touch on that. The episode’s main fault is that it’s too ambitious for one-hour. Further complicating matters is the ‘Mad-Jack’ sub-episode. 73 Yards could have, and probably should have been made into a two-part episode. As for the time-paradoxes, such as how Ruby’s future ghost could haunt her living self, those have been explained by Tenant in the famous ‘Blink’ episode, Wibbly-Wobbly, timey-wimey stuff. In other words, don’t let paradoxes interfere with the message of the story. Mad-Jack, seems to be a destructive spirit/entity which corruptly influences a young Gwilliam, once it is unbound from the Fairy Circle when the Doctor disturbs it. A disturbance which then launches the alternate time-line centered on Ruby, and which Kate, of U.N.I.T., cryptically asserts has happened. That alternate time-line is erased when Ruby’s ghost, whispering “don’t step”, warns young Ruby in time to prevent the Doctor from disturbing the Fairy Circle in the first place. BTW, apparently, ghost Ruby is repeatedly signing; “bless you, thank you”.

Doctor Who HQ is still Cardiff & mainly filmed in/around Wales. Bad Wolf Studios is on an industrial estate not far from it's old location at BBC Roath Lock Studios around Cardiff Bay. Ruby's fictional London home is actually in Bristol in England which has been used a bit by Doctor Who over the years (Chibs used the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge there in Revolution of the Daleks) Bristol is about 40 miles/64km away from Cardiff, Wales so not far to get production to & from

I think this episode is supposed to stress the point that when it comes to things like the supernatural or more specifically the Fae, there is sometimes no real logic behind their actions or how they work, you can't beat it with science and logic, they broke a fairy circle that was clearly confining Mad Jack, I assume The Doctor took his place and the Fae cursed Ruby to live out the consequences of freeing him in a splinter of time. Kate even mentioned it was some sort of divergent timeline. At the end of her life in that side timeline she was given the chance to correct their mistake and stop him from stepping on the circle most likely because she used her curse to stop Mad Jack.

My (still changing) headcanon: we have established that since the previous Doctor weaponised superstition at the edge of the universe, magical creatures have become more of an issue than aliens, and Mavity and the Butterfly have shown us that this has also altered the rules of time travel within the Whoniverse, reality is less robust and it seems as if The Doctor isn’t aware of that enough yet. The Doctor’s casual ‘spoiler’ about 2046 ended ‘Mad Jack’ before his big world changing time event could occur by altering his future through altering Ruby’s, which erased The Doctor because he was/is/will be part of it, and as we know you cannot alter your own time line, plus because He is a very complex time event in human (shaped) form and involved in so many huge time events within his own lifetime, this begins to unravel all of time & space. Multiple time paradoxes then start creating themselves around Ruby’s new alt life, and Old Ruby appearing to Young Ruby is a part of this paradox cascade, which in itself alters Old Ruby’s future and Younger Ruby’s present in a loop, especially when she asks others to involve with her future self, all of which is exacerbating multiple time fractures that Young Ruby isn’t even aware are radiating out around her with everything that she says and does now, especially early on. I suppose what Old Ruby was saying throughout was some kind of warning, like we heard a part of at the end, trying to stop all of this mess occurring in the first place, and scaring people away as Ruby must be quite a ‘spoiler’ herself that affects people; basically early on she didn’t understand the enormity of what’s happening and involving with her could make it far worse, like erase you from time or even collapse the whole universe, so whatever it is she is saying r doing there people shun her because the risk is too great not to. The Doctor should not have said that and Ruby should not have read the notes nor changed anything in her future timeline, especially as The Doctor said ‘Mad Jack’ brought the world to the BRINK of war, for all we know that might have done it some good. Together they created something similar to the crack in time, but without any help Ruby took a lifetime to realise it. Finally what eventually seems to have ended it was how events at the start were altered at the end by Young Ruby spotting the first appearance of Old Ruby, if you watch both versions of that scene back to back you can see how that changes things just enough. Doubt if I’m right as far as RTD’s original headcanon is concerned, especially as in interviews he seems to place it all on the fairy circle, but to me it does put everything we see together quite well. Whatever it was originally written as it does make for great fan discussion though!

In the behind the scenes, RTD talks about the pub scene being a critique on English people's stereotypes of Welsh people as being a little bit witchy or associated with druids and stuck in the past ("can I pay with my phone?") But it seems like for many people it backfired and the Welsh came off looking worse in that scene than the English.

The opening scene is filmed near the Welsh town of Tenby, the pub was in Caerphilly and the stadium was Cardiff City Stadium. The majority of Welsh people are a lot nicer than most of the people we see in this episode and, to be fair, if you were to judge potential vacation destinations by Doctor Who you wouldn't go anywhere. Places are always being invaded, people frequently die horrible deaths, authority figures are often either mad or infuriatingly obstinate, etc.

Hell of a coincidence this episode aired 2 days after our General Election was called. Our elections are less predictable than American ones, no way to know when this episode was being planned. I was really enjoying this, until they just...didn't explain anything. And it seems to be yet more delving into magic, which I'm very much not keen on. Also, no title sequence. An unforgivable sin.

There's a behind the scenes video on the Dr Who KZitem channel, and Russell says that after breaking the circle (which is seen as a massive sign of disrespect in magic terms, even if unintentional) that both the Dr and Ruby have to repent for it. The episode focuses on Ruby's repent, so follows her alternate timeline, so it's fair to say the Dr probably went through something simular within a separate new timeline, hence their disappearance. 73 yards is around the distance from the center point of an english football pitch and Russell went out of his way to find out precisely how far it was, and production followed through with making sure that Ruby's Watcher was precisely at that measurement away in each shot. This can be seen as Ruby's Watcher giving her a hint at what it wants her to do/prove. Speaking of Ruby's Watcher, despite the form it took, it wasn't actually Ruby the whole time. It was a manifestation (it seems to act like a fae from Welsh folklore) that was there to enforce her side of the punishment and witness Ruby atone. Metaphorically, it was Death. After old Ruby died, living out her sentence, it allowed her conscience to go back to send a msg to herself to prevent the disrespectful action from taking place. Like a prison, with the fae acting as a guard, this bubble timeline followed the rules of the curse, explaining the extreme reactions of those who spoke to the Watcher. It probably said nothing specifically, but was in control nevertheless. Old Ruby's fate in this episode would of become fixed if Ruby had failed in her atonement and and hadn't of stopped "Mad Jack". It's 100% a fairy tale. I don't mean what modern audiences think original fairytales were like with the brothers grim, but is closer to what they were like in terms of structure and open-ended conclusions ( and most didn't even have conclusions except sometimes the death of protagonists). Given this was the intent, this episode goes hard.

I dont know about the woman's hand gestures and why exactly 73 yards, but i do have other theories. Where did the doctor go: he was the one who broke the fairy circle, so his disappearance from existance was a type of punishment. And why didnt Ruby disappear? She was the one who took the scroll about Mad Jack and read it, so taking down the PM had become her mission alone, although she didnt know it yet. Why did the woman make everyone hate Ruby: I feel like it was a defence mechanism, coz nothing should hamper Ruby's mission of dethroning the PM. If Unit, for example, successfully intervened and captured the woman, Ruby would have never been able to deal with the PM. So, its like: you try to approach her or talk to her, then you are repelled by her and driven away from Ruby, so that Ruby's mission can be completed without impediments or distractions. Nobody tried to approach the woman after Ruby dealt with the PM, so we don't know if this theory holds. Unfortunately the PM took advantage of Marti, and Ruby feels guilty coz she introduced them. This adds to his villany and why we are motivated to see him dethroned. So Marti is esctatic when the PM runs away and resigns. There is no loop or paradox. The episode occured in an alternate timeline, like Kate told Ruby. And in that timeline, Ruby stopped the PM from leading the "the world to the brink of nuclear war", to quote the Doctor. So there is no actual nuclear war. When the timeline is reset in the final scene, Ruby does not live a life where she will stop the PM, so it isnt a paradox. Her original timeline is restored when she dies in her deathbed and united with the old woman. In the final scene, the doctor again tells Ruby about the dangerous PM. It is a fixed event in time that cannot be changed. Going by the exact words of the Doctor, the PM will indeed come to power in 2046, but clearly doesn't do any catastrophic damage. He simply acquires the weapons for symbolism and leads the world to the "brink" of nuclear war. This entire episode was in an alternate timeline and trying to be all meta coz in this alternate timeline, Doctor Who does not have a title sequence.

Not one of my favourite episodes not only because it's a Doctor lite episode which I'm not a massive fan of but Ncuti hasn't credited himself enough as a Doctor yet to earn a Doctor lite episode yet. That being said however it was a spot on episode right up until after the pub scene the episode felt flat from that point on the way the ending was written was abit lazy. This is no disrespect to the actor Ncuti Gatwa but his Doctor is very clumsy and needs to be more careful what he steps on.

Overall i dont like this episode. - The ending made the entire episode pointless - the mad jack politician stuff was underdevelop and rushed and honestly kinda borning - rubys older look was awful - any deveopment ruby got never happened - the wales people are AHs - Too much not explained like where did the doctor do The first half up to the kate scene was great for atmosphere and mystery but then it just fell flat and the ending where it just never happened and not remembered and the doctor being gone…this episode was a mess and a waste of time… Should have been a 2 parter or heavily rewritten to work for me. Id drop the woman being ruby and have her be mrs flood or susan twist instead or new god type character. And make it longer and deveop the mad jack side alot more and atleast give more answers here as theres too many here
