The next dr is David tennant (he played a baddie in a Harry Potter movie) his time in the role brought the show to its very peak in terms of ratings and awards, its also the beginning of its rapid expansion into the USA... finally, it was so popular at this time, it spawned many spin off shows in which the Dr occasionally appeared, Dr who confidential, torchwood, Sarah jane adventures and totally Dr who.... it was also the start of the Dr who proms at the Albert Hall, where actors of the show introduce the music from the show and during the music, aliens emerged and walked amongst the audience...

@@julesreacts Not sure if you've Patreoned this and heard all about it already.... Christopher has said firstly that he struggled with the characterisation of the Doctor that RTD and the production team expected of him - he wanted to play it a bit darker, but they wanted more "light comedy". He found that to be a big struggle for him, as if you've ever seen Christopher in anything else... he's typically quite dark! (Bad guy in Gone in Sixty Seconds, Bad guy in 28 Days Later, police detective in Cracker...) He has also said he was fighting anorexia whilst filming the show, as well as having major issues with the production team. So - as I said in another post, whilst I was really upset that he left the show, because a) he was a great Doctor, and b) I hated that the mythology was "losing" a Doctor so fast) - I'm glad he got out when he did rather than stay on.

This is such a fantastic way to cap of the first season of the reboot. Chris is an amazing Doctor and when he sends Rose away and says "Have a good life, Rose, have a fantastic life" I always tear up. I do sometimes have mixed feelings about Rose - she's a great character but somewhat insensitive to other people when she's focused of TARDIS/Doctor stuff. Having said that, the Bad Wolf scene with her channelling the heart of the TARDIS is brilliant. And yay for you seeing your first regeneration scene. Farwell to Chris Ecclestone, he's been fantastic and I'm sure you're going to enjoy David Tennant just as much. Each actor brings something different to the role, but are also super respectful to keep the core of the Doctor the same, so you are in safe hands. Chris was honestly a great Doctor, he really was fantastic. David is an amazing doctor he's one of the best but for the regeneration, its not just the face that changes its the personality as well its described by one incarnation as being like dying, everything a timelord is is lost in the process, the memories are all that remain, a new person takes over and becomes them. It's still the doctor at his core but he is a different person but you have to remember that no matter what the doctor looks like or how they act, the doctor is and always will be the doctor.

What a great reaction to your first regeneration. It's a unique thing and I can't think of any other show that does such a thing. There will be Doctors you like more than others, and who the Head Writer/Producer ('Showrunner') is very influential in determining the tone of the show. But when everyone is on their game it doesn't matter who's what, the essence of the show and the character shine through. The same is true, of course, for reactors. Each Doctor has his own personal style, but they all share a certain essential Doctor-ness, which started with William Hartnell in 1963. They’re all well-meaning, eccentric, and at times playful; and the actors can’t avoid these attributes even if they wanted to, because they're generally written into the script. The scripts have been written by a lot of different writers and edited by a series of different script editors, but they usually seem to have a fairly consistent idea of the sort of person the Doctor is supposed to be. And I think the character of the Doctor has always been fundamentally the main attraction of the show. Each new Doctor has his or her personal style and plays the character a bit differently, in the same way that the part of Hamlet has been played in different ways by many different actors, but he remains Hamlet.

Much as it's always sad to see a Doctor go in a way it's fair to say the idea of the Doctor being able to change into someone else is what saved the show. After all way back in 1963 if they had just decided to stick with one actor for the Doctor and then when he left the show (William Hartnell the origional Doctor who actor sadly suffered with a lot of old age and health reasons and was semi forced into leaving the show as a result) you can imagine the show would have just ended. But instead the writers took a HUGE gamble and wrote the idea into the show that the Doctor can change, can become someone else. Of course they keep all their memories and are therefore same person but the idea back in 1963 to recast the main charecter in a show and have an explanation in the show as to why this happened had never happened in any show before and was such a risky thing to do and yet.. It worked. It's what kept the show fresh, it's what's allowed to so many great actors and Doctors and you can argue that the main reason the show is still on tv today is down to the idea that the Doctor can change and can become someone new

It is not well known, but the BBC only committed to one season,so the plan was always for Eccleston to die at the end. After the premiere and the show was a hit the BBC insisted Eccleston sign a new contract, but at the beginning of production he dad a huge falling out with his first director and then the producers. He refused to come back and then had a fight with the BBC. At the time the proders we're doing another miniseries called Casanova, which stared David Tennant, who was a huge fan of the old Dr. Who. The show runner asked Tennant to his home to see a rough cut of the episode, Dalek, and offered him the role if the show went to a second series.

Congratulations, Juliette! Your first regeneration. The first is always the hardest. You've heard of the 5 stages of grief? I've always thought there should be a "5 stages of grief after a Doctor regenerates"😉 Fans get attached to the Doctor and it can be difficult to accept both that one is gone and that another has replaced him. Sometimes fans can initially be hard on the new Doctor because he's not yet "our" Doctor and we compare and contrast and feel the new guy isn't up to snuff. Also, we miss the old one. However, we almost always come around to loving the new Doctor, until it's HIS time to regenerate and we get those sad feelings again and the cycle continues But, yes, one never forgets their first Doctor😊

Yep that's explained. 1. Sadness of the Doctor that we've just lost 2. Resent the new Doctor before their first episode appearance 3. Watch the first 2 or 3 episodes thinking about the previous Doctor 4. Accept the new Doctor and watch their time in the Tardis 5. See them die and go back to sadness again

Have seen all the Doctors regenerate and it's hard to say goodbye to them because you get attached to them through out their time as the Doctor. Each one brings something unique to the role of the Doctor. The hardest one to say goodbye too, I think, was Tom Baker because he played the Doctor for 7 years, longer than anyone in that role. Also you should check out the 4th Doctor(Tom Baker) especially with Sara Jane Smith, I think you will enjoy her as a companion.

Welcome officially to Doctor Who. This is the one show which never fails to break me, this episode in particular with Rose speaking about her dad, and that ending. The show has it's funny moments, it's cheesy moments, serious and dark moments but omg does it do the emotional moments like a cannonball shot to the gut. It's always best to have tissues on standby because you never know precisely when you'll need them. Christopher Eccleston will always be my Doctor, it's true what they say about your first lol, you never forget them. But this next Doctor is amazing in his own right and I'm sure you'll love him.

This episode was actually the first one I ever saw. The one which started it all for me. I walked in on my step brothers while they were watching it the night it was broadcast and I became intrigued. The rest of that year I kept rewatching the episode on a taped VHS video until I almost knew the script off by heart. On Christmas day that year in 2005 I was given the newly released DVD set and watched them all from the start. Still to this day this series of Doctor Who has remained my favorite with my favorite Doctor, Favorite Companion and Favorite stories.

This is by far the least Doctor-centric Doctor Farewell episodes, and it's my absolute favourite of all of them. The end came so suddenly, I had no idea it was even coming when I saw it the first time. I didn't even know about regenerations, so it was really shocking for me.

The energy that allows a Time Lord to regenerate combined with the vortex caused him to dye. But since Rose doesn't posses that energy she was able to handle the vortex better.

I had never watched Doctor Who before this new series 1 with Chris Eccleston, so it was quite the moment when he changed. I knew it was coming because I knew that's how the Doctor worked, but it still was hard saying goodbye to this Doctor. Eccleston is highly underrated, and I LOVE him most especially in this episode. When he tells Rose she's been fantastic, and that you know what, the Doctor's been fantastic too? I get all teary. I also love when Rose shows up after having looked into the heart of the Tardis. With her glowing eyes and epic voice and speech to the Daleks... it gives me chills every time. "I can see the whole of time and space. Every single atom of your existence, and I divide them." CHILLS. Side note: I haven't read all the comments here yet, but I'm assuming someone must have already explained that the Doctor and Rose don't know that Jack is alive? At least, that's how I always took it. He was in a different part of the station, and the last thing the Doctor heard was his death at the declaration of the Daleks, so I think he thinks Jack is dead like everyone else. I don't think they realized that Rose brought Jack back. So they left, and they essentially left Jack stranded there on the station by himself. Which is super sad. I felt so bad for him. (But I was also super relieved that he survived, because he was fun and I liked him. I didn't want him to die.) Can't wait to see your reaction to the new Doctor! ❤

Thank you, Sherry 💜 it was a beautiful episode, and so sad to say goodbye to doctor 9 😢 he was brilliant! Oh yes, a few people explained that they didn't know Jack was alive. I guess I thought Rose knew, but she was influenced by other things at the time, so when she went back to normal, maybe she didn't know 😔

Just a little explanation on how regeneration works to hopefully make you less nervous about the new doctor and the doctors in the future: regeneration doesnt change the doctor's personality, but it does kind of shift what aspect of his personality is most prominent and how the different parts of his personality express themselves. For example, the doctor is always heroic, but some doctors are like action heroes, going toe to toe with aliens, defeating them with martial arts from venus, while others are masterminds, tricking his enemies into defeating themselves while sipping a cup of tea on the sidelines. But while the portrayals can very, the core of his being is always the same. To paraphrase a later doctor, the name he chose, the Doctor, is a promise to the universe, and he always keeps that promise

Of all the many episodes this is possibly in my top 5 still! The amazing but terrible moment of seeing a proper dalek army and the Emperor himself to the amazing exchanges between The Doctor and Rose, The Doctor and the Emperor and Rose and the Emperor. Not to mention the emergency program 1 scene. Then that ending scene is beautiful and sad all at once every time. Christopher Eccleston did A FANTASTIC job at bringing The Doctor into the 21st century.

Welcome to the Whoniverse, Jules! So you've now seen a full series, know about the Daleks, and have experienced the emotional gut-punch of a regeneration. There's more to come, and more to learn, but I'd say you're fully on board now. From your comments after the first couple of episodes, it was clear you "got it" very quickly, so long may your connection with the show continue. "Your" Doctor will forever be Eccleston, in the same way that mine, as an older geezer, is Troughton, but there's lots to look forward to with many other Doctors. Look forward to your continuing reactions!

Welcome to what it truly means to be a Doctor Who fan. You never really forget your first regeneration. Once you get attached to that version of The Doctor, it's always sad to let them go but there's happiness too because each time you get something completely new. I admire your outlook, though. So many people dig their heels in and have trouble accepting change but are often surprised to find how much they fall in love with a new incarnation. Glad you're already open to possibilities.

I've been meaning to say for a while - I found your channel while looking for a Buffy reactor one day while bored, and really loved yours - but my true fannish love is Doctor Who, so it's been a complete delight to see you start reacting to it, and enjoying it so much off the bat. Good luck getting through your first regeneration experience - the "don't go" & "ooh, new Doctor!" eternal war in our hearts, heh. I started when I was growing up back in 1988, so my favourite Doctor remains the 7th, but I do genuinely love all of them in different ways. I hope you will, too. (My fave of the newer Who Doctors are yet to come, so... there's always more with DW.

Ah, bit of a pity you were spoiled by knowing this was 9's last episode but still a lovely reaction. First regeneration under your belt, you're a proper 'Doctor Who' fan now :). (for info BTW, in case it's not clear, the mini-sodes are kind of extra scenes and stories that add flavour and background but the Christmas specials are technically part of the following series - the former are always worth watching but you don't really _need_ to see them but the latter are essential)

I remember the first time watching this through, as my experience landed me in the same boat as yourself only I had NOOO idea the Doctor regenerated. Recommended to me by a friend of mine to begin with Eccleston as the 9th to the 11th Doctor (which was at season 7 of NuWho at the time), where Doctor Who had been on a mild hiatus following the 87 cancellation and the 1995 film which attempted to bring it back, I was told I'd appreciate it more simply due to the initial 1963 "effects" of the show. I couldn't hold back a single tear watching this along with you. Doctor Who gets me EVERY TIME, and if you believe this finale was emotional or even it's share of episodes and interactions with the Doctor, your in for an exciting incredibly emotional journey in the TARDIS with us.

Yeah, regeneration usually happen right the end of the episode so we get to see the new Doctor then. Giving us a chance to dwell on this new face till the new season comes out. Or new episode depending on if the regen happens at the end of the season or not (usually it's the end of the season but not always). And yes, while The Doctor changes his face and facets of his personality upon regeneration, he does retain all his memories.
