Indeed, much like Star Trek in the 60s, they have spray bottles that seem common place everyday items today, but that type of nozzle wasn’t invented until 1958 and not even patented in the U.S. until 1974. Thus, the only non-paradoxical chain of events involves not going back at all. You'll learn in a coming episode what happens when there *is* a paradox. It is so rare to create characters that a viewer ends up empathizing with and caring about after just a couple of episodes. And if a viewer cares so much about these characters that are almost brand new to them, think about how the Dr must feel, living 900 years and caring about every single individual in the universe, and knowing that sometimes you can help them and sometimes you can't.

Some historical context: The BBC had cancelled Doctor Who back in the 80's, and they weren't sure that a reboot would be successful. They had never really given much of a budget to the show, which is painfully obvious in the original Doctor Who series (the bubble wrap aliens are a great example!). There was a LOT of talk in the UK at the time that the reboot would not be well received and even be a flop, therefore, these earliest episodes are still operating on a small budget and it shows. Little did they know that it would become successful worldwide and become a big hit! You'll be able to tell when the budget goes up as it goes along. Hang in there, it's so worth it! Also, he is usually referred to as The Doctor instead of Doctor Who. I know he's been called that in the past but The Doctor is more common. The Slitheen are also some of my least favorite aliens; the best is yet to come! Rose and the Ninth Doctor are so important to watch because without them, we wouldn't have the many years ahead of excellent shows. Christopher Eccleston IS one of my very favorite Doctors, up there with David Tennant and Tom Baker. And I adore the newest Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa! You've got quite the journey ahead of you and I'm excited to watch your reactions! :)

It's probably not something a lot of people remember now but the line "massive weapons of destruction, capable of being deployed within 45 seconds" is a reference to a speech by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair about the (equally fictional) Iraqi weapons capabilities as part of the justification for the UK's entry into the Iraq war. While the budget for the show isn't super high, it's also worth mentioning that this is all-new territory for pretty much everyone involved with the show. Things like the effects and creature designs do get better as the show goes on and the behind-the-scenes crew get better at this stuff - even next season is a step up. Except for Love and Monsters, for... reasons. The next two-parter is in a couple of episodes time. You've got Dalek (pronounced Dar-Lek), then The Long Game, and after that is The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Just in case you want to watch all two-parters together. After that, Episodes 12 & 13 are another two-parter, then there's a bonus scene called Born Again - while it's technically optional, you REALLY should watch it, since it sits right in between Episode 13 and the Christmas special. About that bubble-wrap thing you mentioned at the start... it was in the early 70s, back when bubble wrap was this new thing that many people weren't aware of yet. And while it looks cheap by today's standards, I'd argue that the scenes where it's used actually work quite well because the acting is REALLY good. The effects aren't great, but the actors sell it so well, you don't care. Which is Doctor Who in a nutshell, really. Also from Classic Who is UNIT. It get better explained as the show goes on and they're utilised more, but in brief the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (later renamed to the Unified Intelligence Taskforce after the real UN complained about the name!) is sort-of a scientific research/police force set up to deal with aliens. The Doctor worked with them a bunch back in the day, usually with Brigadier Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who sadly never got the chance to reprise the role on Nu-Who (but did pop up in the spin-off show The Sarah Jane Adventures, which you should absolutely watch!).

I was thinking DAR as in CAR. Hence the spelling. But you're right - it'll be said out loud soon enough :)

BTW if you want to know more about 2 parters: Modern doctor who usually surprise drops them with cliffhanger endings, and gives the 2/3 parts of the story unique titles and episode numbers. You sometimes won’t know that a story is a 2 parter in advance. In classic Doctor who (from the 1960s to 80s) individual episodes were shorter but all stories were numbered as 2 parters/4 parters/6 parters etc. the modern show only returns to that old format on rare occasions and you will know in advance when the show switches back to that format. Anyway I don’t want to hype up the show for you… but I will eagerly await the reaction to next weeks episode.

My favorite show Stargate SG-1, made me notice that the cool action filled episodes didn't have a lot of the character building moments that I loved. I used to skip the slow "boring" ones, but after realizing this it was easier to watch them as well.

13:00 Old Doctor Who Flashback: The computer site Mickey is on is U.N.I.T. (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) a joint science/paramiltary operation in the fictional universe. Established due to events of a Second Doctor story, the UN established the group to investigate possible alien appearances if needed, combat them. They were an integral part of the stories during the time of the Third Doctor. For the crime of interfering with lesser planets, The Time Lords had exiled him to Earth, disabled the TARDIS and erased knowledge of how time travel works from his brain at the time.

They changed the name in the modern series. UNIT not just stands for UNited Intelligence Taskforce.

@@MrMetallix Unified. But no in series 1 it was still United Nations. The Doctor says it in the previous episode. The UN just got more strict about who could use their name, so it's no longer called that.

One thing the new Doctor Who . . . er, old new Who . . . did that classic Who didn't (well, not much) was showing that time on Earth didn't stop because the companions went on adventures with the Doctor - that their friends and families noticed they were gone and reacted accordingly. Jackie was fantastic in this regard.

Loved your reactions for this episode and I agree about the Slitheen Family. However, I still love this episode because of how Mickey was portrayed and for those final interactions between him and the Doctor.

I love the dental science perspective you bring to your reactions. As a pharmacist I do the same thing. As a former scientist so many things just drive me crazy and then make me cheer when they get it right.

So happy you’re starting Doctor Who. It’s honestly up there with Avatar: the last airbender. Season 1 is a little goofy though ngl but there’s still a lot to love. The show really starts to find it’s footing around s3 and 4 and late s2.

The TARDIS was designed to be flown by 6 people at once. It also has a consciousness about it. As such, chalk it partly up to The Doctor being very good at flying it, but NOT 6 people good, coupled with the TARDIS at times opting to take him where he needs to be, not where he tells it to go.

Like Star Trek in the 1990's, there are other parallel series that start up in the same universe and related plots or characters. (Or characters that were not available to be in Doctor Who at the time.) One series starts up in Doctor Who series 2 timeline. Then another you view as you watch series 3 Doctor Who episodes.

P.P.S. I learned tonight there is one "alternative reality" of sorts in which the main character is referred to as "Dr. Who" as his proper name, with "Who" as his surname: the Peter Cushing "Dr. Who" theatrical movies from the mid-1960s.

When I was in college, a class, not one of mine unfortunately, watched an episode, another friend was passing by that class, heard the theme, and entered the class to watch. 😅 It was 2006 or 2007, so I don't remember the exact details.

Like I said on your first vid, I love watching new people discover this show from the New Who beginning. Makes me wish I could go back and rewatch it for the first time again. Promise no spoilers, but there is an episode in a few more seasons that explains the whole “they’re not landing where they want to despite having a time machine” thing. In my opinion, it’s a great episode, so I hope you enjoy it when you get to it. The next episode is a really good one too, in my opinion, introduces a very iconic baddie from the original run.

Ark in Space = not “Cheeze” or “Camp” some of the best science fiction ever. Some of the best Doctor Who ever. Just because there’s bubble wrap, doesn’t mean it isn’t good. That’s Doctor Who. It’s carried by its writing, characters and performances and always has been.
