Elizabeth Sladen died in 2011 of cancer, I just checked the date and I can't believe it's been that long, it seems yesterday that was heartbroken by the news. If you instead measure the time from their first episode to their last episode, the winner is Tegan Jovankan. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart is also worth mentioning...he's not always counted as a companion, and there were some big gaps between some of his appearances, but his first appearance is in 1968, and his final appearance is in 1989. Something I've only just noticed with this reaction. Back in World War Three, The Doctor offered Mickey the chance to travel with with him and Rose in the TARDIS but he refused. Throughout Series 1, Mickey had a hand in saving the Earth twice, albeit passively. It wasn't until he was actively responsible for saving a school full of kids that he gained the self-confidence to want to travel with The Doctor and Rose. I won't spoil what happens later but Mickey really does have one of the best character arcs in the show.
@robertstallings7820

Agreed. Once again, Mickey saves the day. Mickey: "Okay, no time to explain, we need to get inside the school! Do you have, like, I don't know, a lock-picking device?" K9: "We are in a car." Mickey: "Maybe a drill attachment?" K9: "We are in a car." Mickey: "Fat lot of good you are!" K9: "We are in a car." Mickey: "Wait a second! We're in a car!” Curious but timid, intelligent but often foolish or oblivious, loyal but frequently selfish, capable of decisive action but handicapped by a tendency to be overly-excitable or even panicky, and afflicted by self-doubt -- Mickey Smith is one of the most relatable recurring side characters in the Doctor Whoverse. His personal growth from "zero" to reluctant hero makes for one of the show's more surprising character arcs.

Most of the companions chose the timing of their exits, they wanted out because they'd had enough, or reached somewhere they wanted to stay and build a life. Sarah Jane didnt get a choice. Those who watched classic Who understand the deep significance of David Tennant's first words to Sarah Jane. "Hello, Sarah Jane," was the third Doctor's catchphrase whenever she was involved. No matter the situation, she came to know that hearing his rich, cultured voice saying "Hello, Sarah Jane" meant they would find a way to save the day (and themselves) even if she didn't know how. On paper this would have been another day at the office for David Tennant. In reality, he was starring alongside two of his childhood heroes. Elizabeth Sladen joined the classic series in the autumn of 1973 (when he was just 2) and K9 voice artiste John Leeson - not to mention the troublesome tin dog - made his debut in late 1977. Which actually put K-9 on UK screens before Star Wars hit the cinemas in Britain. It must have been a surreal experience for him - although perhaps nothing compared to how his private life turned out!

There's a Steven Moffat quote I like about why the Doctor doesn't dwell on previous companions; "if he devoted even five minutes of his day to remembering each one, he'd get nothing else done." That's why I think he prefers not to mention Sarah Jane or other companions very often. He has no choice but to keep going. I didn't know Sarah Jane or K9 when I started with New Who but there were all kinds of behind-the-scenes documentaries and magazine articles at the time that let me know they were from Classic Who.

Even now, I get chills watching the Doctor and Sarah Jane’s reunion scenes here. Arguably still the most-loved companion in the show’s 60+ year history. And one of the first female companions to have a mind and career of her own, rather than being there to get into trouble and wait for the Doctor to save her. I love that you recognised, even from this one episode, just how special Lis is to the fandom and to the Doctor. David, a huge Whovian as a kid, didn’t really need to act in this episode - he loved Sarah Jane just like all the rest of us. Liz was companion to both the third and fourth doctors, although it’s her time with the fourth doctor that she’s most remembered for. She also starred in the 20th anniversary seral ‘The Five Doctors’ which brought Doctors 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 back together in one story. If you’d like to delve back into Classic Who and see Sarah Jane with Doctor 4, one of the very, very best serials was Genesis of the Daleks, which aired in 1975 (six-parter). Sarah Jane eventually left the show in 1976 after the Doctor received a summons to return to Gallifrey, but instead of dropping her off near her home in Croydon (south of London), she ended up being left in Aberdeen, hundreds of miles away in Scotland! ‘School Reunion’ neatly sets up The Sarah Jane Adventures series which ran parallel to Doctor Who for the next few years. While aimed at kids, it has the same emotional depth as the main series and the continuity is very much tied together. Well worth a watch. The fun pilot ‘Invasion of the Bane’ aired a week after Doctor Who’s 2006 Christmas special, with the excellent, main first season airing a couple of months after Doctor Who season 3 in 2007. Re Torchwood (the series), don’t start watching season 1 of Torchwood until you’ve seen this full second season of Doctor Who. Season 2 of Torchwood then comes between seasons 3 and 4 of Doctor Who. Hope that’s helpful - I know the two spin-offs complicate the viewing order sometimes! ps - don't worry about individual episodes having other writers' credits. Russell's role as showrunner involved commissioning those writers, giving them instructions, ensuring continuity and rewriting where necessary. I think Steven Moffatt's scripts were the only ones that were never subject to any rewriting during Russell's tenure.

@@Swenglish Barry Letts (Producer) and Terence Dicks (Head Writer) of series 7 believed that the character as conceived was a mistake because Liz Shaw was imagined as a scientist almost the equal of The Doctor and one of a companion's functions is to ask the question for audience exposition. As someone who grew up with Tom Baker's Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen's Sarah Jane Smith as his companion at the time - this episode was like David Tennant's reaction when he first saw her in the school, absolute joy. There is SO much history between them, and Tennant watched all of it and his doctor felt all of it. You can see it in his face. Same with Sarah Jane, you can see the emotion and the love, and the pain. This episode might be my favorite of the first series/season Tennant did - if not for the finale.

In the UK the Prime Minister (or PM) is also an MP. We don't elect our leader directly (although many people bear who the Pam would be when they go to vote) instead we elect one MP per constituency/District and the leader of the party to whom the majority of MPs belong becomes PM. It would basically be like the house majority leader becoming President (or head of government as the President is technically the same level as the King).

Russell T. Davies didn't just write for the show but was also the showrunner (a cross between producer and script editor). It was his job to make sure of the script continuity of each episode and was responsible for each series arc (Bad Wolf, etc.). Though an episode might be written by someone else (in this case Toby Whithouse), RTD would sometimes write little bits or edits to keep everything consistent.

Hi Angela. David Tennant grew up around the time Sarah Jane was the Doctor’s companion and he was a huge Doctor Who fan so his reaction at seeing Sarah Jane in this episode was very likely not acting. It was genuine joy and excitement at meeting what was likely one of his childhood role models. It’s the same actress playing Sarah Jane then as it was when this episode was filmed. It’s so heartwarming when you realize how all very genuine this all was. Only can a show as long lived as Doctor Who ever accomplish such a feat as having an actor who watched it as a kid not only become the man he admired but also meet one of his childhood heroes in a future episode.

Sarah Jane Smith travelled with the 3rd and 4th Doctor (which is how she knows about regeneration - she watched him do it!). She appeared in a spin-off show called K9 & Company, but that never went past the pilot (though does explain how she got K9, since the Doctor didn't leave it with her in the main show). After this episode, she finally got a full spin-off called The Sarah Jane Adventures, which is genuinely wonderful and only ended because the actress, Elizabeth Sladen, sadly passed away from cancer in 2011. I really do recommend you watch TSJA, it's a lovely little show that I think you'd love. EDIT: To save people the effort: the writer of this episode, Toby Whithouse, hasn't done anything else Sarah Jane-related. He's written a few other episodes of Doctor Who (including one of my favourite Peter Capaldi stories) and an episode of Torchwood, as well as appearing as an extra in the DW episode Twice Upon a Time. His other big accomplishment is being the creator of the show Being Human (the UK version, anyway).

Not strictly true. In the last story of season 15, the Doctor’s companion, Leela, decided to leave the Doctor and stay on Gallifrey, and K9 decided to stay with her. The last scene of that episode saw the Doctor bring out a large box with, I believe the words “K9 Mark II” on it, so fans knew that another version of K9 would be around for the next season. It wasn’t till near the end of season 18 that K9 Mark II finally left the show as a continuing companion.

The Doctor also had to leave Sarah Jane behind due to external factors, there was an emergency that the Time Lords sunmoned him to help with and at that point in time non-Gallifreyan life forms were forbidden on Galifrey outside of the danger zone (an area where specimens from the most dangerous races in the universe are kept for observation) in addition to this though, the last time The Doctor brought humans back to Gallifrey was at the end of his last adventure as the Second Doctor, the Time Lords were unhappy with his intervention with the time-line, not only did they force him to regenerate but they took his companions, Jamie and Zoe, erased their memories and put them back where he originally picked them up, essentially making it so that their adventures with him effectively never happened to them, which he didn't want to happen to Sarah Jane. In Jamie and Zoe's cases it probably didn't end well for them though, Jamie was a Scottish Highlander and likely died in battle shortly after being returned home and Zoe was from a space station in the future that suffered a lot of serious problems, and her fate upon returning was highly uncertain.

Two things to point out 1. The headmaster was played by Anthony Head who also plays Rupert in Ted Lasso. 2. ASBO stood for Anti-Social Behaviour Order and was a sort of mark assigned to your record as a kid when you would do bad things such as vandalism and destruction of property but you're too young to be prosecuted. It was basically a way of telling naughty children "you'd better start behaving before you grow up, because the police are keeping a close eye on you." They were discontinued in most of the UK because they were sometimes issued in an unfair way and they became a bit of a joke (hence the line making fun of them in the episode). Apparently they're still used in Scotland though.
