21:00 : the Angels didn't kill all those people and turn them into Angels; the statues in there had *been* the Angels for the past several centuries, with the people who had been there displaced backwards in time and/or killed (and, as we find out later in the series, with some of the statues having been "usurped" by the Angels, metaphysically). The implied-but-unanswered question (solution) as to *why* the Angels were there is that the temple turned out to be a sort of trap for them -- they were diminished sufficiently so as to be unable to leave, hence the other Angel (which had been off-world at the time) having to arrange things so as to rescue her "sisters". (*How*, exactly, they became trapped is left open to interpretation, but it's not ultimately important and can be narratively "hand-waved"...) As far as the idea of whether a silhouette of an Angel is an Angel, it metaphysically appears (see what I did there?) to not be the case -- otherwise, the silhouette of the Angel left during the static-fuzz of the pause when Amy hit the remote would have counted as "the image of an Angel", which it obviously didn't. (And, as Eric noted, we saw the shadow of a moving Angel in "Blink", when it nearly touched Sally the first time she encountered them at Wester Drumlins but froze when we, the audience, saw it.)
@HelenWheelsUtah
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I read your entire essay. Your comment that something that can be "narratively hand waved" is a good one, and it's a necessary part of Doctor Who. I have always loved the fact that the Angels cannot move even when the viewer is looking at them. The only time I take exception to the way that the angels are treated is in Amy's last episode. I won't go into spoilers but you probably know what I'm talking about - the one angel that could not possibly have moved without being seen. I'm not one of those people who nitpick at everything that is implausible, impossible or goes against its own rules, but when it's an obvious breaking of the rules, (as was the case in that one), it takes me out of the story long enough to say, "what? How can that possibly be?"

You're going to wanna get used to this kind of episode because it happens a lot. Steven Moffat has a tendency to strike storytelling gold, find a species or character or storyline that works REALLY well the first time he uses it, and then he usually tends to run it into the freaking ground over and over and over again. Sometimes it works out well, and he ends up successfully expanding upon the original good thing that he made. Other times he goes way the Hell overboard and ends up turning it into a parody of itself, which unfortunately is what I think he ends up doing with the Angels (Not in this episode, necessarily, but in following ones definitely).

@michaelandrews117

NPE 94 Ambiguity is fine. Poor internal consistency is just objectively poor writing because it makes everything feel lazy. Hell I can handle plot holes more than most others can because Doctor Who relies on ass-pulls quite often. But internal consistency (consistency on villains Moffat created himself) is not too big of an ask. This episode is stronger than the next that's for sure (especially considering next episodes treatment of Amy).

Michael Andrews the only problem with the angels is in this episode, with the whole image of an angel. If you get rid of the camera angel, the whole image of an angel thing works, as long as it’s secluded to a person having to look at it in the eye. The whole angels moving thing isn’t a problem at all, since in the other episodes, they only move like their teleporting because someone else is there viewing them that way, or that their just going so fast that it’s just like teleporting when we view them and they move. In the next episode their moving slowly

Ever notice how many big name actors end up on Doctor Who at some point? Like a lot do it before they become common names(like Andrew Garfield and Gillian).

Aaron and Rick are, by far, the best of the Blind Wave Crew at not revealing anything with comments or expressions (concerning the shows and films they've seen beforehand). For example, Aaron with DW and Rick with Cowboy Bebop. They're brilliant at not giving anything away. I love that!!!!

They make Both Dalek action Figures and Funko Pop Daleks.... They make all sorts of action figure Daleks from Dalek Sec (the BLACK DALEK) to all the big colorful ones (orange, blue, yellow, etc )... They also make a Winston Churchill and Dalek Ironsides figure set!

I always found this to be a far more exciting utilisation of the Weeping Angels. I thought them far scarier here than I did in Blink, which I've always found to be a somewhat overrated story.

Same, I've only watched Blink twice I think, maybe three times when I binge watch the show. But I always find the episode's plot never stays in my head so I never see the hype that other people get from it.

I love the Weeping Angels and don't get people thinking Moffat changed the lore. They obviously move when no one is watching so what if it actually showed it. Doesn't matter to me, just made them creepier imo.
@alchemicpunk1509

Audience participation. The brilliance of Blink is that the audience also locks in the Angels. The fault of this two parter is showing them moving despite that removing the audience participation, a great deal of immersion that came from it and a grand load of the whole quantum lock idea.

As far as lore goes I'm fine with whatever, but ruining a great monster by disregarding a baseline rule of framing it that informed its identity? That's a shit move.

Yeah, no idea what Moffat was thinking when he wrote that scene in the next episode. The line in this first part even say it's a Quantum Lock, yet the Angels "assume" Amy can see them and their instincts kick in? Then we see them move as STONE. Which makes even less sense.
@Wolf6119

I think the idea is that the angel transforms, move slightly, and then turns back to stone after each frame of footage on our televisions? Like it's basically moving inch by inch by inch, really quickly in a row. So we don't TECHNICALLY see it moving, it just looks like that. But yeah, regardless of what the intention behind it was, it looks like the statue itself moves, which is just silly.

BradleyS95 Maybe he cared mroe about drama, emotion and the obligations of the scene itself? You sound like comic book guy ffs.
@BradleyS95

Wolf6120 but they apparently move very fast, so if we as the audience are going to see them move, firstly they need to be faster and secondly they shouldn't be stone. But I admit the whole scene is pretty cool and would have worked better with a different enemy. But it made no sense with the WA.

I didn't even recognize that the guy from game of thrones who gets infected with grayscale is also in the Doctor who episode where a human thinks they're turning to Stone... I saw him in this first and didn't even recognize him whenever I saw him in game of thrones because of the helmet I mean his voice is extremely unique but it was so long in between seeing this episode and game of thrones that I didn't recognize

SPOILERS for S5 finale When the doctor restarts the Universe with another Big Bang he starts going back on his season 5 timeline through the cracks. This way his future version ends up in the forest in the next episode and talks to Amy.

@emiya the important point you're missing is there's actually a give away that it's not the present version of the doctor...though without fore knowlegde you'd think it was a mere continuity mistake. the doctor loses his jacket when he escapes the weeping angels. when he has the conversation with amy about remembering what he told her as a child. you can see he's wearing the jacket...though it's a really close up shot so it's barely visible. if eric for example spots it i can see him maybe not even saying anything as he'll think it's an insignificant error.
@operationuniteoncers6971

I remember watching this when it aired so many years ago and picked it out, I also thought it was just another directing error but when we're shown the truth in the Big Bang it all finally makes sense. But I agree, I think they'll just brush it off

That speech at the end was ruined on the original broadcast because a banner ad for the Graham Norton Show, complete with a little cartoon Graham Norton, appeared on the screen and it just drained all of the gravity and tension out of the moment xD

I'm sorry to be so late, but I am watching these reactions for the first time. The winged angels, fully powered, will send you back in time. The statues that we see in the Maze of the Dead, or whatever, are just angels that have not been able to consume "food" or feed off time energy or whatever it is that they do to keep themselves alive.
