12 has all his memories from the Time War he had supresed in hiding the War Doctor back, and he just fought for 800 years on Trenzalore defending its people. Its not the Doctor that cant be around soldiers, its 12 and for good reason- he is sick of soldiers and fighting. Its more a character point than a statement on soldiers. On the point of why they would keep the Dalek at all rather than just kill it, presumably the fact it keeps saying it wants to destroy all the Daleks makes them think it could be useful if push comes to shove and so worth hanging onto.

Azmat makes some good points below about 12, but not sure I share all the other negativity as overall I really liked the direction this series starts, sorry Azmat :) The Danny scenes were a bit dumb but it was Danny who was poor and Clara was the stronger actor, but this is Clara (or should I say Jenna Coleman) 3.0, working with Peter and her increased tenure of acting by this point really helps her raise her game I think, in time you'll see why I hope. 12 is dark but as you can tell he also doesn't know sort of man he is, he's just grumpy and confused and more detached from people. From what I remember, the idea of this story was actually crafted or atleast the concept of it was crafted back in the seventies, I believe it sat as an unused or reject idea for a long time, Capaldi was a good choice for it :) Unfortunately, in the year of Capaldis first season, early cuts ofthe first 4 episodes were leaked from a server in Miami possibly while the BBC were sharing copies globally or sent for post-editing, which was a big shame at the time.

27:30 I think that she just wanted to escape where she was after seeing Clara with the Doctor (exemplifying the the Doctor actually isn't a one dimensional ass like she first thought). She's still grieving the loss of her brother and wanted to run away. If she had come along, I could have only seen her being a companion for an episode or two (Like Adam was with Nine and Rose).

God, I had forgotten how cringy some of the Clara/Danny scenes were. I also agree that the kid asking Danny if he's ever killed anyone was really weird. It felt very forced and that they were trying to artificially manufacture a character arc out of nothing. The Doctor's refusal to accept that there could be a good Dalek was also strange and out of character. He has literally seen good Daleks before like the Dalek from "Dalek" and Dalek Sec from "Daleks in Manhattan"/"Evolution of the Daleks"! However, that doesn't give Clara the right to slap him! That was a really terrible moment and one of many reasons why I never really warmed to Clara as a character. With that being said, this episode sets up the 12th Doctor's dark side and his character arc brilliantly. He's very cold and calculated in this and it's very interesting to watch. I also like how it's the Doctor's hatred for the Daleks that makes Rusty turn into a Dalek killer. Although, it's still a bit clunky because all that happens is Rusty changes back into the way he was at the start of the episode. I'm not sure about the memory bank thing either. The Daleks are genetically manufactured to be these hateful creatures. We saw that in "Genesis of the Daleks". Why would they need a memory suppressor to keep themselves evil? This messes with the concept of the Daleks in a way I don't like. It makes them too similar to the Cybermen. Still, this episode is alright and a lot better than any of the other Dalek stories we've had in the Moffat era so far.

Having been a teacher, I can readily confirm that this is exactly the sort of question that some pupils will ask to try and get a rise out of new teachers (at least here in the UK). Way back in my own schooldays we had these conversations more than once--although in a more respectful way--as quite a few of my teachers were veterans of WW2 and later conflicts and some could always be distracted into anecdotes with a well-timed question.

His disrespect to soldiers is maybe that they remind him of when he was the War Doctor and was forced to fight for pretty much a whole regeneration. His link with UNIT contradicts this opinion {though a number of regens, including in Classic, has had problems with them too) so maybe its just this regeneration that has the problem.
