This episode gets a lot of flack but I've always enjoyed it. Nowhere near as bad as people make out. I like that Doctor Who explores different genres, like the found footage genre in this case, and I also like that the Doctor doesn't "win" in this episode. Good stuff.

It's super crazy. Season 9 is almost over, Sarah Jane Adventures is almost over, only 8 stories left. Just the specials and season 10 now (18 episodes) and Doctor Who is caught up. It's really bittersweet, gonna miss Jess's reactions to Who related stuff (I dunno what plans for Torchwood, Class and Classic Who are, and don't wanna be pushy with them) But it feels crazy to think you're so close to catching up

So it comes to this... Now, I don't hate 'Sleep No More' as much as everybody else does, but I will agree that it's just not that good. I like the "found footage" concept, I like the almost claustrophobic set design, the subtle electronic music was creepy, and as ever, Capaldi kills it: “Sleep isn’t just a function. It’s blessed. Every night we dive deep into that inky pool, deep into the arms of Morpheus. Every morning we wipe the sleep from our eyes and that keeps us safe. Safe from the monsters inside.” However, the Sandmen is a ridiculous concept to swallow and comes dangerously close to "moon is an egg" logic (mutated eye sleep! Really!?), and as much as I love Reese Shearsmith as an actor, he looks and acts as though he's still in an episode of Inside No. 9. When it comes to Mark Gatiss episodes, I'm afraid this goes on the same pile as 'The Idiot's Lantern', 'Night Terrors' and 'Victory of the Daleks'. Plus, he was even thinking about doing a sequel/prequel to this! Admired the ambition, but the execution leaves something to be desired.

It reminds me a bit of Aliens of London. The idea of a found footage episode has potential, as does the idea of the Doctor having to solve an alien crisis that he can't get to, but rather watches through the media. But neither really did it right in my opinion
@ojwh1933
6 жыл бұрын
How is it a ridiculous concept? A machine mutating human DNA. That's a pretty standard sci-fi monster movie idea. The fact that sleep dust is being what's mutated doesn't make it any less plausible. The Moon being an egg is just blatantly false and every concept surrounding it defies science, and they don't even stick to the concepts within the episode as it contradicts itself. That's nowhere near the idea that a machine can mutate a human/something that comes from a human.
@Wannabe_Baby

"the Sandmen is a ridiculous concept to swallow and comes dangerously close to "moon is an egg" logic". No, it doesn't. The moon being an egg is the stupidest thing ever in Doctor Who. The Sandmen are no different from the Adipose, the Master Race, someone becoming an Ood, someone becoming a Zygon, etc.

I agree with you, Jess, about this episode. I didn't hate it as much as some fans. Those who say it's the worst episode are forgetting Kill The Moon and other forgettable episodes. This one wasn't the most interesting, but wasn't the worst. Kind of like lemonade without the fizz, but certainly not champagne. In my opinion, it is reminiscent of a lot of Who episodes set on a complex of some sort, like _"The Waters of Mars"_ (Tennant), _"Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS"_ (Smith) and _"Last Christmas"_ (Capaldi), et cetera. Remember when Amy had something in her eye? There were some funny moments. Clara taking 40 winks, Clara asking the Doctor if they should call the monster "dustmen", which is probably lost on Americans as you probably don't know that refuse collectors are called dustmen in the UK. The ending was disturbing! I think the least interesting episodes are probably shown before a big storyline, in this case the episodes which bring Season 9 to a close. PS. I was wondering, Jess, if you would be taking a break before you watch the Christmas Special or after. *Ssshhh! Please don't give anything away about the final episodes of Season 9!* Take care, Jess and I look forward to your next Who reaction video!

The premise here is actually quite original and daring, subverting tropes to a degree, but there is something off on the execution of it that is hard to nail down which makes it feel flat. In theory the plots good- space station goes dark, only thing that survives is 'lost footage' style film of what apparently occurred, only its not really lost footage at all its been cleverly crafted, directed and edited by an unreliable narrator (which is a bit meta on lost footage films) and its actual purpose is to tell a story engaging enough to make people watch to the end, by which time the Sandman signal will have embedded itself in their brain and will turn them into Sandmen. Its solid enough on paper I can see why they went for it, but like I said something off in its execution somehow. Still I prefer Who to try something different, new and fail in the attempt than for it to be boring, safe, bland and succeed. Its always taken risks to varying degrees of success, and I hope it continues so even when it fails trying, as for every Sleep No More or Love and Monsters there is a Midnight or a Blink.

I thought it was interesting and different, i like the roll that Clara and The Doctor played, showing how they end up in really weird situations that are nothing like other typical Doctor Who episodes, and for those reasons, changing things up it plays an important roll. A mixture of feelings, lots of likes and dislikes riddled throughout it, but i have watched it more then once because the concept of that episode was interesting and different!

Even if this episode wasn't handled brillantly, i liked it. The simple idea of sandmen made of our eye's dirt when we sleep is enough to like it. People are starving for new ideas, monsters, episodes with different direction or angle, and when it happens, they spit on it because it was not like the previous episodes that made them love the show BUT this show is about a living being that runs constantly, going through change all the time and he even changes himself a lot ( even if his hearts stay unchanged ). So, when i see season proposing change, i do the effort to understand it and accept it, even if it doesn'"t make my heart beat as fast as it used to. This is the difference between liking and loving.

Although far from being the best episode of the season, it is a story I've felt compelled to re-watch a lot! While the 'found-footage' concept does appeal to me generally, I do also like it when there is an attempt to surprise and shake up the format of the show occasionally. I agree the concept was let down in some areas by the execution, but the Morpheus-sleep-condenser idea is compelling. Anyway, its too late now, it can't be unseen! May as well watch it again!!

Honestly, I just thought of it that every TV show has it's ups and down, it's no big deal if an episode isn't as amazing as all the others. Ok, this episode didn't really work, but one thing I appreciate about Doctor Who is that every season or two there's an episode that really experiments with the format. Sometimes they work great (Blink), sometimes they have good ideas but fall apart (Love and Monsters), and sometimes they don't really work at all, like Sleep No More, but at least they take a bold risk. There were things I did appreciate about the story though. I enjoyed the setting of Neptune. If you think about it, you almost never see it used as a sci-fi setting. The cgi of Neptune was gorgeous, and it really captured the feeling of isolation and being alone, very far from help, right on the very edge of the solar system. I liked that the Doctor never actually quite figured out what was going on, and the ending video. I liked the confederation of Japan and India, and that it was never explained, leaving viewers to endlessly guess how such an odd pairing would ever emerge in the future. There were certainly some decent concepts in there, but it just never came together right.

Like Jess says, a good concept (I especially liked the moment when you realised you were seeing Clara's POV when she didn't have a camera) but not well executed. I don't get all the hate for it, though. Perhaps it's because it's surrounded by some excellent episodes on either side so doesn't compare well and it sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of series 9. But, overall, I'd consider it bang average, there's quite a few episodes I think are much worse.

It's a Mark Gatiss episode. On the plus side, he's trying something different here from his usual pastiche of movies and TV shows he loved when he was growing up in the 1970s. So, he's expanding his horizons conceptually. On the minus side, he still writes characters and dialogue, and structures his stories, like Mark Gatiss. And he has the same deft (?) control of thematic content as he's ever had. So, yeah. Look on the bright side: He's only got one more episode for the show (the following season), and is unlikely to contribute again. His next one's better, anyway.

12:52 - Yeah, I think that's the appropriate reaction. XD I personally like the episode. It would probably rank around the middle for me of Twelfth Doctor stories. I think the last 5 - 10 minutes could have been significantly improved (as it just leaves you thinking "wtf did I just watch") but the rest of it works really well. I thought it did found footage really well (from what I've read, it seems a lot of people were put off by the fact that it was found footage and dismissed it based on that and I usually don't like the format but thought it was effective here); the Doctor and Clara had some good dialogue; the soundtrack was great; the clone grown soldier was an interesting concept that I hope 'Doctor Who' goes back to at some point; the characters were well acted and characterised (I thought the characters of 'Under the Lake'/'Before the Flood' were quite generic whereas these felt like real people); and it had a really interesting premise (most people seem to find it ridiculous which baffles me because with all of 'Doctor Who's crazy concepts, I'm not sure why the idea of a machine mutating human DNA is considered a ridiculous one). Also, Jess, I wouldn't mind if you did want to take the first week of July off. I appreciate the consideration though.

Seems I'm very much in the minority, but I really enjoy Sleep No More. It's not the best episode of S9 (how could it be?), but the 'unreliable narrator' concept is something that I always enjoy, and I think it works well here. Most people seem to focus on the 'found footage' aspect of the ep, while either ignoring or completely missing the unreliable narration. Sadly, I found that it really needs to be watched more than once for it to click (I say 'sadly', because most people tend to go 'nah, hated it', and skip it when they re-watch the season). I suspect Mark Gatiss is fan of both Blair Witch AND The Usual Suspects, because this episode has both of those films all over it :)

I can't watch this where there is a low internet connection XD (I'm at my hometown) I will watch this 5 days later XD. Happy Eid Al Fitr/Eid Mubarak! Still confused about this episode though....

Sleep no more isn’t as awful as I first thought it was originally when I rewatched it and the scene where the computer is singing the ‘sandman song’ slowly to the guy who’s trying to get into the door, almost mocking him is quite chilling

Not many People liked this Episode very much. It wasn't bad, it was just OK. Have you counted not only how many times the word Hybrid has came up but also how many times there were references to Movies.

Yeaaaah. This episode happened. I resent it mostly for the fact that it had a decent premise at its centre, but was completely let down by the ridiculous "found footage" element that has literally never worked in a visual story telling medium since The Blair Witch Project because nobody knows how to bloody do it right! I think Gatiss overshot on this episode by miles. I would call it chaotic, but the thing is, nothing even happens for it to be consider chaos. It's just. I dunno. A great big block of rotting deadwood lodged in the bedrock of a swamp somewhere. The sandmen serve no purpose, Rasmussen is the weirdest... I guess "villain" (I think he's meant to be the villain), the supporting cast are awful, and the way it just abruptly ends and resolves nothing (not that any substantial plot was ever unpacked to begin with) just leaves it on a really sour note. The only thing I do quite like about Sleep No More, however, is the inclusion of "Mr Sandman." That's still fairly unnerving given the environment and the scenario they're aiming for. It's just a shame the whole package is so horrifically bad.

People all have their own opinions... Some people can be dictated by what doctor they like best. In my opinion, this episode has a really different approach and to be quite honest sort of like it.

I really liked this episode, as it attempted a new direction of narrative story telling for Doctor who. And the ending left me with chills. Though, my one big problem with this episode is that the ending, with the sandman spreading across the entire solar system, is never mentioned or addressed again. As if it never happened. It's honestly really confusing to me.

There was going to be a sequel to make this a two parter but they decided against it
