I found his death quite horrifyingly brutal. The Dot, like a bullet, goes through his skull, and he just slumps, like he was shot. And Lindy just cowardly and metaphprically pushes him in front of her. I like dark Doctor Who, and that was very dark!

I love the ending of the episode and I love the overall messaging about selfishness and racism. This moment here, though, would be a favorite of mine even if it was any other story. Having the main character we’ve been following pull such ruthless but somewhat understandable move like that is fascinating. Imagine if a future companion did something like that. Imagine if they accepted the Doctor’s help and she had to sit with that. Among the episodes that are side character specific, I think Lindy is going to be talked about for a very long time

This was a hard left turn for the episode. Lindy was ungrateful the entire time, yes, but she was starting to turn around. At this point in any other Doctor Who story, Ricky would have been happy to put himself in dangers way and correct the targeting himself to allow Lindy to live. But it was Lindy who does this; Lindy murdered Ricky, and he is devastated by her betrayal at his last moments. He imagined a life with her, and had this all shattered in one brutal moment.

I'm not defending her, just playing devil's advocate here; but if you swim out to someone that's drowning you may end up dead yourself because in their sheer terror they'll try to climb up you to save themselves and it forces you under. There’s a bit of a difference still. In the drowning situation, the person isn’t making a conscious choice to push their hopeful saviour under; they’re in fight or flight mode and trying to get out of the water. Lindy was scared, but she was able to compose herself enough to give the Dot a monologue about Ricky’s real name and insist that the Dot check its records. Lindy was panicking, but she was fully aware of what she did the entire time and committed to throwing Ricky under the bus, then showed no remorse for it at all.

I think if it becomes a trolley problem of her vs him, the situation is admittedly more complicated. But he was able to fend it off when it was going for her, he became vulnerable because he had a head wound. She could have fended it off herself and helped him, as he did her. It would have put her at risk, but he took that risk for her.

it's interesting...i've been leaving comemnts on various channels about how despite the ham-fisted writing, this epiosde IS a warning against racism...just not in the way the writer intended in that so much of the fandom is happy the rouge Ai and it's pet slugs genocided an entire civilization becasue they assume Lindy and her two freinds REPRESENTED the entire civilization...after all, they all looked alike so they must all BE alike..even Ricky was supposedly guilty of some sort of microagression if you believe the more...liberally inclined fans out there. An entire civilization condemed at a glance. Oh sweet irony. What do you think..did Ricky deserve to die?
@credendovides20

It's not an assumption when they literally said so themselves. She and her "friends" had multiple times during the episode expressed their values and most people watching the episode simply unwillingly ignored them because they were focused on something else (aka the bugs in their bubble-life). The end made it clear for the viewers that their society was, indeed, rooted in racism from the beginning and we simply didn't notice; that's the point and that's the not-even-hidden message: just because they were bad people (because they indeed were confirmed as such throughout the whole episode, and not just because of the racism), does it mean that they deserved to get eaten? No. The Doctor clearly answered to this question: he was still willing to save them all because he believed that their lifes mattered even if they didn't think his life was as valuable as theirs. This goes for Ricky, for Lindy, for Paul... This doesn't make them less bad people nor it makes the audience haters for calling them out when they outed themselves as such. Context matters. It is not a first-glance assumption "because they look the same". Having clarified that, the fact that you ignored their actions and words to make up a fake scenario in your mind to justify the racists against the evil liberals is... concerning.

But it wasn't based on just Lindy and her 2 'friends', only the episode focused on them. The 'Homeworld' was destroyed before 'Finetime'. We saw this when Ricky tried to make contact. It was most, if not, all of them, not just a few that made the AI dots hate them, which is ashame for people like Ricky as he didn't seem like them. We see this when he tells Lindy that after his 2 hours of 'work', he leaves his dot off and reads. He is more open minded and he listens to the Doctor. He also is way more selfless and compassionate (seen by the confused and shocked reaction he has to Lindy's betrayal) and tried to warn people of what was going on, but his videos were deleted. He also pulls Lindy up on her dismissal that thousands of people are dying when he helps her through the slugs. I'm more confused the dots, having achieved sentience, did not realise, or want to, that he is basically an outlier of the world he is in. Bit like Gothic Paul who picked up on something being wrong and trying to talk about it but not alot of context if he actually was a bit better or not.

@@claregallacher2684 ah, but we don't SEE anyone on the homeworld being racist...we don't see anyone on the homeworld at all..we just see a picture of a ruined city and a slug. we don't see any state progaganda or anything. JUST lindy and her "circle of freinds" whom i STILL think are really at a short bus camp for the mentally impared, not a resort for rich kids. you might as well call Skynet "justified" in killing off humanity because the human race was too privlidged. it wasn't supposed to be senient, it was supposed to be a tool to make lives easier and safer. but then it became self aware and had access to all the military systems and...boom. enter Arnold. Now in this case, we don't know what set the "dot" off other than a blithe comment from the Doctor about how stupid lindy and her circle of freinds are" and he's coming in the middle of the story...he is literalyl just guessing and does absolutely NOTHING to investigate, despite having access to all his toys. He literally condemns an entire civilizaion based on the actions of a few retards.
