I love this bit, as it was actually quite profound at the time - Hartnell did argue in favor of emotions, but I don't think that The Doctor and the Cybermen actually debated if they made you stronger or weaker before this; it was also not particularly common in other sci-fi either. I would say, however, that the scene is incomplete until you play the next ~30 seconds, where the Cyber Leader shows The Doctor that his emotions make him powerless when his companion's life is in threat. I absolutely love the dialogue exchange between them at that point (ending the scene in full) -- "Such a reaction is NOT a disadvantage?" "....No.." "You are mistaken - all I need do is threaten the woman's death for you to obey me."

Great scene. Kit Pedlar said the idea of Cyber men came from the fact he could easily imagine a machine reacting logically to things but he could not imagine a machine composing a poem like Dylan Thomas. This speech taps this idea, that humans find joy and value in life from small things, the taste of food, the beauty of nature, the scent of flowers etc. The true horror of Cybermen is they used to be human but now they exist just for the sake of existing, they don't live life in any sense at all. So, this speech is actually superb. The Doctor is pointing out the soulless nature of these beings, despite their advanced technology.

He originally came up with the idea of the Cybermen after reading a newspaper article about the advancement of robotic prosthetics for those who have lost limbs. He and his wife then wondered what would happen if a human received so many of these robotic prosthetics that they can no longer be distinguished as human.

The Doctor sure took a risk when he spoke his mind to the Cyber Leader when he asked him when he last smelled a flower, seen a sunset and eating a meal without thinking that the Cyber Leader would've struck him down for saying that and showing that he's not sorry that he isn't human anymore.

my point. Eccelston brought something completely new. Previous doctors from the classic series all brought something fresh. tennant was 4th and 5th with a lot of nitric oxide thrown in. Smith was 2nd and 5th combined. Capaldi was 3rd and 6th but with a unique delivery. I always preferred when an entirely new personality was brought forward not based on past performances. Although such as he was, Matt Smith had the most going on in my book with the new series, but unfortunately, he was tied down to companion drama and weak jr fan fiction writing (like capaldi) and wasn't really allowed to flex his muscles without them sprinkling all that sugar and flaky wave your arms around stuff they did with him. What a pity. But still, Big Finish has been doing doctor who rgith for some time though so....... This is all of course just my opinion. And opinions aren't fact of course.

That's the 5th doctor's major character flaw(in a good way) He doesn't have the presence of the 3rd or 4th doctors, so it far harder for himself to intimidate enemies, or prusade potential allies. Infact, I think it's the implied reason for how the 6 doctor became so explosive and energetic compared to 5.

I can't say for the individual release of Earthshock, but it's included both in its respective The Doctors Revisited DVD and the Cybermen compilation DVD release in Region 1, and it's fully functional there. If you're willing to go without the bonus features (which I'd understand if you weren't, since classic DW DVDs have great features), those are two compelling alternatives.

It's dialogue and acting like this that makes me appreciate the classic show for it's ideas and groundwork, but find it naiive and simplistic. I just can't get into this form of storytelling as serious.
