I don't object to Doctor Who being a woman, I object to the reasons why Doctor Who is a woman now like why they got Bill... To fill affirmative action type quotas (I should add I see no reason why a person could not be Doctor Who or their side kick because they are female/black/homosexual). I have absolutely no problem with the characters just the BBC and their twisted reasons behind them.

From what I've seen, many people are not aware when a company or group is pandering. The BBC is currently pandering to diversity/PC crowd. The problem some have is this usually is done at the cost of the writing, casting etc and something lower quality is made in its place.

99% of fans aren't complaining about the switch of sex, they are just afraid that the upcoming series will be dominated by the change of sex. I love the change, but if the series is a constant barrage of comments about men vs woman, or any feminism stuff, I can't get behind that. Just regenerate, acknowledge your now a woman and move on as normal. That's it.

*+TheRainydayvideo* *>Seeing the positive reactions of young girls online shook away all of the crap for me* Little girls aren't the core audience for the show and they don't buy more than a tiny fraction of the merchandise. Delusional Feminist whack jobs have taken over the show and they've been running it into a ditch for a couple years now. The female doctor is going to alienate a huge chunk of their fan base and have a major negative impact on the show's income. The most likely outcome is that the show will be cancelled after the train wreck of this next season plays out. Same thing happened to marvel comics when the writers were replaced with social justice warrior drones and the sex of a couple of their big money makers was changed from male to female. The sales imploded along with their profits and now they're struggling to flip the genders back where they belong. The BBC may have a captive income in the form of the TV tax but for merchandise and international ratings they have to rely on the free market and in those places ratings mean money. And without ratings, income drops and then the show gets cancelled.

*+TheRainydayvideo* *>I question why men feel that they can't enjoy a show with a female lead* That's a strawman argument. You know very well that there are a lot of shows with female leads that do very well. I liked star trek voyager for example. What happened here is different however. Changing the sex of the main character of an already established show is an entirely different situation. It will be jarring and it will change the entire dynamic of the show.

The original shows creator was ask how to reinvigorate the shows rating before Sylvester McCoy was cast to the roll. His answer was to have the doctor regenerate into a women. There have been many fan bases film featuring a female doctor that have been incredible. The final measure weather Jodie Whittaker will be successful boils down to 1: the writing and 2: her ability to being believability to the role. So condemn the show simply based on a gender role is grossly unfair to both the show itself and to the actor. To those who are having issues I say grow up and open your mind.

As a Sci Fi nerd boy here I didn't know how to feel about the female casting. I'm always forward for change and equality in gender roles but I felt the change to female was rather a statement than what would work best for the character. I felt for doctor who the character and show concept best matches a male doctor only but that doesn't mean a female can't play it (missy etc). I feel the problem is there's not enough main shows LIKE doctor who , as good of or better were the main character is an unarguable and established role of a female. I feel if that was the case there would be less pull to change unneeded characters like the doctor to female because there's already shows out there were the main is female only. Equality of gender roles in shows should be taken on a large scale for the entertainment industry rather than aiming internally at singular established shows which changing things(like this female change) is not nessassarily needed at all. The doctor should be a male character in my eyes, the same reason why another 'famous programme however with a lead female ' should be a female only. Unfortunately there's not many of those around and that's what really upsets me :(

Yesssss. Thank you for addressing this. Me and my ex partner used to be big into comic books/movies based on them - marvel, DC, the usual. Likewise, loved a bit of doctor who. However, I was in Forbidden Planet (sci-fi comic book stuff) and the lad at the till asked an open question about what we thought of the new Batman vs. Superman film. As I replied, the man that asked the question rolled his eyes and continued to ask my ex what he thought. Continuously my ex tried to involve me in the conversation as we both shared strong opinions on the film and literally the lad at the till disregarded me and spoke over me in order to chop me out of the convo. I was gobsmacked. I never actually realised that it was a thing until you mentioned it. I thankfully have a lot of wonderful, open minded male friends and we all talk to no end about these topics but there's definitely a small proportion of not very nice people that judge before us nerdy girls even have a chance to speak.

I have a mixed bag of emotions re: the casting.... I was not someone who wanted a female Doctor to be a thing (because while the casting itself was a surprise there has been discussion for ages around the idea of should we/could we have a female next) and while I came around to the idea of Missy (the obvious beta test for named Timelord genderswapping) I just felt like when SO MUCH changes (new doctor, new showrunner, losing companions etc) it would be nice to have ONE consistent thing that doesn't change... BUT ON THE OTHER HAND I do consider myself to be a feminist, I am thrilled that we will have a strong/intelligent female lead on the show who doesn't have to take a back seat or only show up for a few episodes here and there... and now that Jodi is canon I see no need to get all pissy before even giving her a chance, I just would have preferred to have a Timelady or similarly non-human character who is on par with The Doctor as a series regular companion instead of needing to genderbend The Doctor in order to do it... I guess I get why it has to be the lead in order for it to really be a role model of that level but it would have been nice to see more of an ensemble cast with more than one Gallifreyan like how in the old series Romana travelled with some of the classic Doctors... But thankfully I have the mental and emotional capacity to be both disappointed that it didn't go my way and excited to see where this goes... up until now the females of the Timelord species appear to be cleverer and more competent than The Doctor (not saying he's not any of those things but Romana and River seemed to have more control over their regenerations, The Doctor doesn't so much fly the TARDIS as crash lands it etc) so as long as the writing is good and we don't end up with banal storylines meant to appeal to a female audience while actually insulting it then I'm sure it won't take me long to convert.

I recall saying that if we had someone from the prior season in the show it would have made the transition easier. I remember being upset that Moffat basically get rid of everything I loved and started over. But I got over it. But right now I am ready to chuck everything Moffat did and start fresh. I have not been this excited about Doctor Who in a very long time. Hopefully the show will get a lot better now.

I am actually that Jodie Whittaker will be playing the Doctor, although I had a hunch that the next one would be played by a POC. Nevertheless, it's a small step that feels more like a giant leap. There's a certain quote that best fits this occasion. It's near the end of the "Caves Of Androzani" story where Number Five has just been regenerated into Number Six much to the astonishment of his companion at the time, Peri. When asked, "What's happened," the Doctor replied ever so smugly, "Change, my dear. And it seems not a moment too soon."

Lex, spot on again. I think you are giving the best and most honest review of this DW series. I think the role needed to go to a women, after all, men have dressed up, padded up and acted in women’s roles for long periods of history. To read and hear the misogynists scream, when one women takes this Time Lord role after 12 males doing the part is unbelievable. The only thing I don’t understand is that when men acted the part of Lady X throughout history, they shave and tried to portray themselves as a woman. Would it not be fair to ask a women acting the part of Lord Thyme, to butch up, drop the voice, beard up, wrap in the chest and sport a 8 inch ~ strap-on under the trousers (that is, if she can do it without man-spreading). I am convinced this will send the ratings to the moon, not just in the UK and USA

I'm a female doctor who fan, and I have to admit that I wasn't 100% happy about the announcement of Jodie, mainly because I'm worried how it will affect the plot. But what's upsetting about being a part of the doctor who fandom at the moment is the sheer amount of fans saying they won't watch, or the show has been ruined, which is ridiculous. If you don't love the casting, focus more on Jodie's acting *ability*. But also I don't think those who are pleased with the casting should call those who don't agree sexist. Also, I'm not a hardcore DW fan, but as I understand, the Doctor was never meant as an audience surrogate. "This is PC pandering". 50 years of an expected male in a role and show as dumb as this is male pandering. The idea that women now being included in anything is an invasion is male pandering. Just. The show is dumb. The role is dumb. It's a dumb goofy show about an alien. Women are not aggressively separate from men. It will be the same as the usual change in personality met in every regeneration. The doctor's change to female will not affect the plot because the Doctor is an alien first, not a man. People care about this rather than the fact the show's been in a pit for Moffat's entire run. I hear nearly nothing on this though. The writing is shit, but a woman gets an uproar. People arent defending the show. They're just defending a need for men. Just demand better writing. Jesus christ.

I think the BBC did what some people to have tantrums, and wanted it to spread, because it draws attention to the show, which is what they need. there's nothing like haters to boost a show (or any other form of art for that matter). I know what you mean, if there are more male/female fans of a show, assumptions tend to be made that all fans are that gender. But it has NOTHING to do with that. It has nothing to do with the fact she’s a woman. It’s because of the gender change and the implications that has, and also because of the reasons it was seemingly done for. If this change happened 3 years ago or earlier, there would be less of an outrage. If the Doctor had always been a woman, there would be the same outrage (the split was about 60/40 btw).

I was actually making tweets regarding me being strongly inclined to think that the next Doctor would be female the day before the announcement. I was considering the last three years (such as Clara acting as the Doctor in Flatline and Missy) and I figured it was only a matter of time, so I can't say I'm surprised. I'm definitely all for a female Doctor and never felt that the Doctor always had to be a male. That being said though, I don't think it's quite the same as making a character like James Bond a female, which I've seen people bring up. Ian Fleming intended for the character to emphasize masculinity, and that making James Bond a female would defeat that intention and miss the point. I mean, that would probably be like making Mary Poppins a male, as it just wouldn't seem to work from a character standpoint. You might as well make an entirely new character at that point really. Hope this isn't taken the wrong way though. There have been awesome action characters other than James Bond, such as Sarah Connor from the Terminator series and Ripley from the Alien series. With the Doctor though, I feel that the Doctor and James Bond are two entirely different characters, and that the Doctor doesn't emphasize masculinity like James Bond does. I compare the Doctor more to Peter Pan, as Peter Pan doesn't emphasize masculinity either and has actually been played by females on stage, so I think it's fitting as both are just that flexible to change. Whatever the case, I hope it goes well for Jodie. :)

I think any upset was probably more rooted in the BBC's forcing this decision through for socio-political reasons. But I think it is not grounded, as the "new" writers have dispensed with continuity in lore, eg. timelords were only supposed to regenerate 12 times now we are on 13; the doctor was not supposed to have much control over his regeneration, sycorax.. etc etc.. iirc he had a wife and child too?

Steven Moffat at SDCC said that maybe 80% of the reaction he saw to the announcement of Jodie Whittaker playing the Doctor in the future was positive, but he did also say there was no outrage which, as you say, is false, but also flies in the face of his own "80%" statement. But, yeah, Missy did well, and alongside another regeneration established that a) that sort of regeneration was canon and b) fans of Doctor Who were a lot more willing to accept a female Doctor than was previously thought. Yes, there are still people out there who just aren't ready to accept that, hence the complaints to the BBC, but thankfully, I suppose, they're becoming more and more a vocal minority. Anyway, I'm going through my usual "nooo, don't leave! Who can ever replace you?" phase. Same thing happened with Matt Smith and David Tennant (not so much with Christopher Eccleston, but I think around that time New Who was still finding its feet). Within two or three episodes, I was right with the new incarnation, ready to take on all of time and space. I'll get through the Christmas special later this year, be a little bit annoyed by the Doctor regenerating again, but in a couple of weeks I'll no doubt be really excited for more Doctor Who, and what direction the new Doctor (and the new main writer now that Chriss Chibnall is taking over from Steven Moffat) will go. The other thing I'm really looking forward to as well is who the next companion will be, since, as far as I know, Pearl Mackie won't be returning after the Christmas special (as a main character at least, who knows?). They've just had their first openly homosexual main companion and they've had the pansexual Jack Harkness, although he was more of recurring character than a main companion, and within New Who the main companion has never been anything but female (male companions always seem to turn up through existing relationships with the main companion*), so what about a male main companion? Doctor Who is always trying to push those boundaries in little ways, and I really like that. *This is actually one of the reasons that I really appreciate what they did with Donna Noble. Every other companion in New Who has either been basically in love with the Doctor (Rose and Martha especially), or been part of some other romantic relationship (Amy wit her established relationship with Rory and Clara with her eventual relationship with Danny). With Donna they just went "right, her fiance turned out to be an arse, but we're not going to have her want the Doctor or anyone else". It was a refreshing change of pace to just see her being there being pretty damn awesome. I think they tried something similar with Bill. They gave her a one off would-be-serious romantic attachment and then largely dropped it, but I think part of that might have been down to trying to explore the idea of an openly homosexual female companion without actually having to go "here, look, two women are a couple!" which given the wariness they seem to have around reactions from certain parts of their fanbase might have been a good idea (although no doubt the majority of people complaining about a female Doctor would be surprisingly quiet and flustered about the prospect of seeing two women together on television).

I think Moffat's point is that the media is acting like all Whovians are upset, when that's just fake news. The real fans, and even most casual fans, are very happy.

Carlos 123 That's largely what I took away from it, I just think he worded his point poorly. There's still some "outrage", but it's not the widespread "all Whovians are sexist" outrage the media's making it to be.

All the women I have spoken to in my life who have been hardcore fans of the show are more upset about the female doctor than the men in my life who actually like the idea surprisingly. Personally, I'm not a fan of this change and I grew up with the show and always associated it with my dad and sorta saw the doctor in my dad in many ways (he's smart, a protector, an all round hero, would do anything to keep those he loves safe) and this change is a bit weird for me. For a lot of girls the doctor was also their first fictional love too which is another reason as to why people are upset. I'm extremely interested to see how they take this role with the female doctor but I'm worried they're gonna play it very childishly. Recent showrunners haven't been the best at writing decent storylines lately, but c'est la vie, I had a good run with the show.

Its all about a good first impression, I instantly loved the 10th doctor (he’s still my favorite) because of the good first impression and good character. On the other hand, my first impression of the 11th doctor was bad, I hated him for a while, but he grew on me. The 12th was mixed (for me), but I ended up liking him a lot. My personal first impression of the 13th doctor was bad for several reasons (I’ll list them to make it a bit easier.) 1) Women have recently been pushed into lead roles both in new movies and remakes of old classics, Ghostbusters for example. And most of them has been terrible. (There has of course been good movies with women leads). 2) I couldn’t easily draw character traits from her face and body language. The 10th looked a bit mature, but retained some charm and humor. The 11th looked young and a bit silly. The 12th looked old, serious and a bit bitter. I couldn’t draw anything of significance from her in her “promo”. 3) Marvel recently made characters as iron man and Thor women, their recent comics (not read them personally) have I heard is terrible. And the general fan base is disappointed. I’m worried something similar will happens with Doctor who. 4) People don’t like sudden large changes, and the doctor regenerating (changing) into other males isn’t that a serious change. But the doctor regenerating into a female is a bigger change than what people are used to. She probably have to prove herself. 5) There is a lot of anticipation from the last doctors, There is a lot she has to live up to. 6) They’re trying to “fix” the doctor who formula, “If it isn’t broken, why fix it?”. Since the doctor debuted he has been a male with typically one or two companions (at least one female companion). Usually the doctor can be viewed upon as a mad scientist, and his (often rational and moral) companions lead him the right path. Is it now going to be a solo male companion? These are my views and first impressions of the new doctor. The are sure to change when we get to see her more. Hopefully she is going to great and live up the expectations.

Negatives: Richard Ayoardy still isn't the doctor. They will probably gloss over stuff about the gender identity of the doctor. Positives: Moffat is leaving so maybe we can actually have a character die and stay dead.

The first person I talked to about the Doctor Who news was a man who likes Doctor Who and he was upset that the Doctor was a woman- It seemed like he didn't really care who the doctor was as long as it was a man, and he even talked about how Jodie Whittaker wasn't even attractive (as if that's relevant- doubt he was upset that Peter Capaldi isn't his type either). I don't think he even knew who she was but he was judging her based solely on her gender and looks, and this wasn't even a man who I'd even thought was sexist before those comments. It seems like a lot of people feel like this, so there is definitely a lot of hate out there. It's a shame- from what I've seen of her in Broadchurch, she's a very talented actor and I think she'll do a good job.

Who recently has been dying on it's feet ratings struggling to hit 3 million at times and there almost no public interest in previous few seasons. Jodie's first ep will be the highest rated ep since Tennant and I hope the public stick around.
@Carlos-pc7od

I hope she gets great ratings, but let's be fair: the decline is because BBC, unlike American networks, refuse to look at DVR numbers and streaming numbers. They refuse to adapt. The American networks have begrudgingly admitted overnight numbers no longer matter as much as they used to due to all the people who don't watch shows live. BBC needs to catch up. That being said, I'm so excited. She was my favorite choice of all the names mentioned. I didn't think she would actually get it it, but funny how life works sometimes.

NickBD I doubt it since most of the controversy and interest it gained from casting a female doctor has already died off and it won't even start until next April so most Fans who didn't like the idea will stop watching the show. Meaning it wont gain that much new viewers and will lose a chunk of its current hard-core viewers who watch live episodes, buy merchandise and go to events.

I will bet my house on this being the highest rated episode since DT. I think when the ep comes around the interest will be very high. I also don't think many old fans will switch off anyway, even if they do after they will watch the 1st ep with interest. This announcement has been worldwide press something not even DT got, even US news has it as a main headline. Thing is with viewers, public interest, merch and events Who couldn't have been lower. They even had to end Who experience in Cardiff as attendance was so low. This will imo will give Who a big kick, it's problem is making it a good show and keeping people around.

It was modern horror that was created by Mary Shelley, not sci-fi. If anyone "created" sci-fi, it was Jules Verne. That said, there have been a ton of fantastic female sci-fi writers. I'm only contesting your claim of "created by Mary Shelley."

Actually, Margaret Cavendish's The Blazing World is often cited as one of the first scifi novels. Which was published in the 17th century, long before Jules Verne. As a sidenote, while I'd argue Frankenstein is very much a scifi novel, Mary Shelley also wrote a post-apocalyptic scifi novel called The Last Man about 30 years before Verne's first novel, so yeah. It's incredibly ironic how much scifi is such a 'boy's club' when women have had a really heavy hand in its founding stages (and beyond).

Makeing the doctor a lady is not political correctness. Political correctness is the avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against. Example calling a mentally challenged person retarded. Or calling someone crippled instead of handicapped

"Doctor Who is PC now" When wasn't Doctor Who PC??? Wasn't it always about acceptance and diversity and humanity? It's like when racist and/or sexist people are upset by new Star Wars or Star Trek. I'm excited to see what Jodie brings to the role. And it has been established in canon that a male timelord can regenerate into a female one. But I understand why people were upset. Coming after people's outrage at Capaldi's casting a few years back because they didn't cast a woman, this felt like the BBC's way of saying, "Look! See! We did it! We cast a woman!" And I tend to think that if you're worried about not having a female role model (which is a ridiculous claim for Doctor Who -- there are probably more strong women on the show than strong men), then go create one. (I also saw several of the same people fawn over the fact that little girls now have a role model -- because they didn't before...? -- but then shut down people upset that boys lost a role model by saying, "You don't have to be the same sex to be a role model!" Can't have it both ways....) Anyway, that's a longwinded way to say that if the stories are good, I'm good. I loved Jodie in Broadchurch and Black Mirror, so I'm excited to see what she can do with something more lighthearted. (Edit: I said male doctor, when I should have said male timelord. Fixed. :) )

I heard there was a petition done to recast for a male Doctor. If it is true, that is ridiculous. Fans are getting too whiny, thankfully I'm not one. First it was the Doctor was too young, then too good looking, the writing is lazy, Clara has been it the series too long, the Doctor is too old, Moffat should go.....and now complaints about a female Doctor. I was shocked at first with seeing Jodie being cast, but now I am totally on board and can't wait. The whole idea of a female Doctor started with Matt Smith in 11th Hour and since then we have been hinted many times of a possible gender change.

This is just one of those weird situations where nobody's in the right. Like, obviously, all the sexist people who are throwing a tantrum aren't right. Obviously, it's off color to use a gendered insult against people who are in an emotionally heightened state because they feel something they care about is ruined, (even though those people are wrong), and the mentality behind this (happiness at other people's misfortune) is mean spirited and wrong... but, like, it's just a tweet. it's not a big deal. there's no reason to get mad or to insult lex even more or anything like that. Again, obviously the male-tears joke is patriarchal and anti-feminist and discourages equality in every way, but it's just a tweet. I think it's a mean-spirited tweet, and I think the tweet undoubtedly hurt the feelings of a lot of people who care about DW (and the doctor's gender) more than they should, i don't think there's much debate on the fact that the world would be better without the tweet in it, but... it's just a fucking tweet jesus who cares. oh well, the important thing is that jodie whittaker will be a great doctor and all will be well.
