Fun fact! So far, the Doctor regenerating has only been that explosive three times, all during the current era of the show. All three times are because the Doctor held the regeneration back for a long time instead of immediately regenerating. Like pressure building in a volcano as it refuses to erupt.

Is it just the upped quality, or are time constraints what is keeping your aot reactions back, either way I hope you are doing well and you shouldn't rush yourself, health should always comes first over everything else. The bit that 'stealth emotions' me is the meeting with Nurse Joan Redfearn's granddaughter. Incidentally, they named the granddaughter Verity Newman after Verity Lambert (the first producer of Doctor Who) and Sydney Newman (the de facto creator of Doctor Who). The Doctor, as John Smith, remarks to Joan that his parents were 'Sydney and Verity' in that story too.

There are Doctor Who Confidentials which contain interviews and behind the scenes, which are well worth looking at. It was in the script that that was his mother, but the line was cut for some reason. Bernard Cribbins, who played Wilf, appeared in a film version of Doctor Who in the 06s, with Peter Cushing as the Doctor. He and Tennant really mesh. Heroes give their lives to save millions of people. Real heroes give their lives to save one old man. Tennant scores a Perfect Ten

Tennant had some misgivings about the final line if memory serves. They did four takes at varying levels of emotion (you can find them all on KZitem). This was the third most emotional one. The fourth one is even more full on and he lobbied against them using that one because he felt like it was too much. I've really come round on this episode over the years. I found it very overwrought when it aired but nostalgia makes me love it now.

Man it feels so weird thinking about this episode, and I constantly think about it in a certain way: I’ve seen every episode of new who, and with that in mind, after this episode ends and we see Matt smith, I just constantly think about his energy that the spinning camera and his catchphrase captures perfectly. I think about all of his adventures and his seasons as the longest doctor, and his companions, music, emotions, etc. But I regularly forget that this was the end of a HUGE ark and some of the most popular doctor who ever. Gallifrey was back! The master disappeared, people died, people lived, it was insane. It’s so hard to process, at least now 15 years later with the entire knowledge of the show in my head. Such a crazy episode.

Great reaction and discussion~ It's been a fun ride! Thanks! They filmed several takes of that "I don't want to go" scene if you really want to see how great that performance was. And you are right, a lot of people didn't like the final scenes but I loved them and David Tennant on the commentary seemed thrilled. He said he "wept buckets" when he read the final line in the script. And he also said he thought they had all earned that long goodbye. You should hunt down the commentary tracks. Like you, I was anxious to see everything David Tennant had ever done and he now is pretty much my favorite actor. And The Doctor is Not even my favorite character of his. I was lucky enough to see him perform live on stage in Richard II, which was fantastic! I, too, was disappointed that they disposed of Gallifrey so quickly. Maybe they could only afford Timothy Dalton for a few hours! I think he took care of Donna because he feels responsible for her after erasing all her growth and setting her back to day one. I also liked Matt Smith right away and I loved his first episode. My love for the 11th Doctor waned over time, but I think you will enjoy his era. Moffat certainly has his own idea of what Doctor Who should be like.

He insisted to Rose that he was the same man as Nine, just a different face (and body and voice), but now he doesn't think so, apparently. If we look at this as different life stages instead of people, he is in a less mature stage right now. Or if he's right now and it's death, what would that mean? Just a title handed down with some memories that aren't yours? He believes all the previous was him. He doesn't disown those memories. He doesn't think it wasn't he who traveled with Sarah Jane. If you're not quite ready to say goodbye to Tennant yet, there are 3 more stories he did during this era, in a manner of speaking. During Series 3, him and Freema Agyeman (Martha) did an animated episode called 'The Infinite Quest', which is a sort of Space Pirates story. And in the same year he did these Specials, he did an animated episode called Dreamland (the 3d animation style is a bit weird but the story is good), set in Area 51. Finally, he appeared in The Doctor Who spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures, during Series 3 (The Sarah Jane Adventures is well worth watching too - it was more squarely aimed at young people/kids than Doctor Who, which is a more family show, but it's a great series and he appears once in that. You also learn a bit more about where Sarah Jane's son came from.

Yeah, I think you could build up to a Martha/Mickey marriage, but it kind of feels like let's knock their visit off at once, it'll save time. Freema Agyeman questioned it because she already had a fiance the last time we saw her and she thought it made Martha seems a bit fickle. Davies told Agyeman that he wanted Martha to be Martha Jones-Smith before the end. So it's basically a Smith and Jones joke. And how clunky is "Then you shouldn't have married me"? That was an "As you know, Phil" line if there ever was one. It also kind of feels like just throwing the two Black characters together. I think Martha deserved her own sendoff if they had to do the tour, and I also hated his going to meet Rose before she met him as Nine. That really annoyed me. Sorry to be negative here!

There are Wiki pages to every episode. Great infos to each episode. But only read on the top the first bit of text and the production and the broadcast and reception segment.section. If there are sometimes infos to actors. do not read them, they mostly spoil if an actor appears in a later episode again. (They are highlghtedwith actors) If you only read the text at the top and the prodzuction and broadcast , you are good. Example, "The villain Lady Cassandra, a CGI creation voiced by actress Zoë Wanamaker,[6] was developed for the episode. Executive producer Russell T Davies stated that Cassandra was inspired by drastic beauty treatments that had been taken by female celebrities,[7] particularly inspired by the appearance of various ones at the Oscars. He said, "It was horrific seeing those beautiful women reduced to sticks. Nicole Kidman struck me in particular. Nicole is one of the most beautiful women in the world. But she looks horrifying because she’s so thin. It’s like we’re killing these women in public. We watch while you die."[2][6] Originally, Cassandra was intended to have collected pieces of human history, such as the Magna Carta and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.[2] The book still appears as a set piece, being contained in a glass cabinet decorating the Platform One hotel.[8] Wanamaker reprised the role of Cassandra in the 2006 series' first episode, "New Earth".[9]

AHHH it's finally here. I've been waiting for this episode for sooo long lmao. By the time this is uploaded you've probably already watched The Eleventh Hour which is pretty good at establishing Matt Smith, but I suppose it still takes a while to adjust to a new Doctor. The 11th Doctor is absolutely brilliant. 10 is one of, if not the most beloved Doctor in the history of this franchise and when his role came to an end, there was unending skepticism with regards to Matt Smith replacing him. The pressure on that man was terrible. Countless fans said they would quit the show because no one would ever come close to the greatness of Tenant, and I believe that in some aspects the were correct, however in others they were terribly mistaken. There are moments where imo 11 far surpassed 10. Really looking forward to knowing what you think of the new Doctor, he's a bit more alien and less grounded than his predecessor, an interesting spin for sure.

A very emotional goodbye. I didn't think I would be able to enjoy DW after Tennant left, and started season 5 with a lot of apprehension. As it turned out, Eleventh Hour still holds the place of my favourite series opener! If you liked Matt Smith's intro in this episode, I'm very hopeful you'll enjoy the next one 😄 Excited to see you next week!

Were you under the impression that you're the first reaction to shed tears in this episode? Welcome to the Matt Smith Era. It's.....fantastic.

My problem with Tennant's regeneration is that it gets the whole concept of regeneration completely wrong, when the Doctor regenerates, his body and personality changes, but he is still the same person, but this episode makes it seem that the Doctor gets replaced by someone else which just isn't the case.

Well, the second Doctor talked about the first Doctor as if he was someone else for his whole first story.

I mean- tbf having your body and personality change is sorta akin to changing as a person. Even though you are on a technical level, the same person, having everything that's unique to you change would fuck you up a bit. I think it's quite similar to reincarnation in Dharmic religions, except The Doctor has his memories. The soul is the same, maybe parts of the personality is too, but the body changes. You would be different from the person you once were. I really like this aspect of the 10th Doctor. He was so incredibly human compared to the other Doctors. Love it or hate it, you gotta admit, it's a pretty unique quirk.

someone with different personality might just have a different take on it. thats how it feels to him.

I agree. The doctor is always the doctor. It’s change, not death. Nine’s exit better showed that. It was like the writers were mourning Tennant leaving rather than the doctor regenerating. Toned down a bit would have really helped.

@@CrankyGrandma It is death, at least temporarily. The Doctor said "I was dead too long *this time* " following a regeneration.

I didn't really like his final story. It's only really good from when he saves Wilf onwards.

Don't like how the doctor was making Wilf feel guilty with his little hissy fit.
