The episode has a critic score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 19%. One review on the site is as follows: "A bunch of primitive humans band together and are able to defeat one of the deadliest creatures in the universe. They break open the highly advanced casing (with a sword?) and cut the alien mutant in 3 parts and place them all over the world....honestly, this is the first minute and NOTHING makes sense. And if you want no logical sense or the following of established in universe rules then eject now. - The Dalek is revived by UV lights (not explained) and teleports its body back so that it can just stitch itself back together (what.) - The Dalek mutant proceeds to do some Venom roleplaying by hijacking people. - Ryans dad makes an appearance and we get scenes that belong in Eastenders. And boy, do they go on for a while. - OMG there's a giant weird squid on the wall. I think I'll touch it. If you are going to be inspired by sci-fi movies, please don't make it Promethus. - Dalek then does some GTA for a while. - Jodie Whittaker continues to have no real understanding of the Doctor and I've seen better rage/anger from Tommy Wiseau. - Random dude is introduced, says something dumb about how well he can finger his boyfriend and then dies. Alright. - Ryans dad carrying around the microwave is like watching the show foreshadowing it's own death. - Chibnall, I never thought I'd say this but, Daleks in Manhatten did the whole human/Dalek hybrid idea better. - UNIT has faced it's greatest enemy.....Brexit. Seriously? Despite being played semi-serious, it makes no logical sense at all. Aside from that....there's also Torchwood, but no we hit our 'reference' quota. - The Dalek, possessing a human woman, manages to build a scrapmetal Dalek tank, in less than an hour, in a farm....WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS! No but seriously....we are just ramping up the 'logic = not needed. - How did it make rockets!? - A random military shows up to be fodder. - The CGI (not the design, even though it's pretty poor) is worse than before 2005 - The Dalek is a special Dalek and can shut off the TARDIS or something, I don't know it's not explained well. Neither is the whole communicating via hologram. - Bradley Walsh is still the best thing about this show. Although Charlotte Richie did excellent work with what she was given. - The genius, 2000 year old time lord can't figure out how to defeat the Dalek. But Ryans dad, for 30 seconds on the TARDIS and having no idea what is going on, says you could probably use a microwave. What. - And then they defeat the Dalek in its tank, with the microwave. WHAT. - Dalek controls Ryans dad and suddenly Ryan loves him now. - Dalek is thrown into a supernova. - I don't know what else happened cause I literally turned to drinking wood varnish to try and erase this from my memory. What an omishambles this whole season has been and this special, my god. As if ruining the Doctor and TARDIS wasn't enough, now the Daleks are getting dismantled. Seriously. Omishambles." I especially love that last bullet point.

how does a dalek scout with different abilities to normal daleks end up on earth without a shell or weaponary, it`s not answered in the show, but what i would have done is have it be a failed experiment sent to earth to be destroyed, and when it gets back to full power, the doctor tries to stop it and fails and finally the real daleks turn up with that upgraded dalek and finish it off, and they leave due to some kind of truce between them and the timelords, what this episode really shows is how utterly useless chibs is with doctor who, when you can even write an ok episode with one of the best villians in the show, then you except defeat and step aside and let someone else do what you can`t, but since chibs intent is to destroy this show as much as possible a low rating is only proof that the job isn`t finished.

My assumption (trying to find some logic in this season) is that this may have been one of the early versions of the daleks. The super powerful ones are more time-war era, while maybe this one was some form of first generation version, made of cheap materials without forcefields or something.

Doctor Who, a show gifted to us by older generations - slowly poisoned and destroyed by a pernicious modern generation who never understood the value of what they'd been given in the first place. But do you now feel a bit lost and betrayed in how to come terms with it all? Well, there was a punishment practised in ancient history called _'Damnatio Memoriae'_ - in which the transgressor would be literally erased from all history for the crimes they had committed, and was considered a fate worse the death by the ancient Egyptians and Romans. The expression of the sanction, was to cancel every trace of the person from society, such as scratching out their names from statues and from the walls of tombs - as if they had never existed. _In order to preserve the honour of what had gone before…..they would simply be eliminated from the historical narrative altogether….._

It's common SJWs don't write in any personality or character development for ANY of their characters. The Doctor this season having no unique personality and no development was expected. Well, that was probably the best episode of Chibnall's run so far. However, that's not much of a compliment, really. There was some really good stuff in there. I loved the idea of a Dalek loose without its casing and hijacking a human in order to carry out its mission. It was suitably creepy, unnerving and added some genuine peril and tension - things I thought were desperately missing from series 11. The actor playing Lin was a massive standout to me, particularly when in full-on "evil Lin," mode. She came across as seriously menacing with just the odd facial expression. You know when people criticise Jodie for having no gravitas? THAT RIGHT THERE - that's it! The ability to emote with just a look. To put across a sense of threat or strength with little to no dialogue to back you up. I think she'd have made a great Doctor! Alas, almost everything else falls short. Once again, Chibnall proves that he doesn't understand how to do pacing. Build it up and then kill it stone dead. Start to recover it, then bam, killed again. The whole scene with Ryan and his dad in the café was the worst offender. It ruined all the momentum and for what? It didn't tell us anything we didn't already know about Ryan's relationship with his father. Ultimately, that scene was there to introduce the microwave and the "drama," was a red herring intended to distract us from its importance. So it failed on every level - killed the pace, added no character growth and couldn't even hide the obvious importance of the existence of this microwave. Bad Chibnall. The plot was completely nonsensical. Some questions - * A Dalek is somehow defeated by 9th century swordsmen? How, exactly? When our modern military still couldn't stop one made out of an old oil drum and some spare parts, how exactly are we supposed to believe that a fully-functional Dalek was defeated by a medieval army? Not even a regular Dalek, but a super-special scout Dalek with extra powers. I thought they were finally going to give an explanation towards the end when "guest character #2" started talking about the history of the battle. But all we got was a picture of a Dalek looking like it has been tied up. Huh? Also, a history book talking about this supposedly unknown battle with a picture of a Dalek in it? Talking about this custodian who were also apparently completely secret? So the combined armies of everyone managed to somehow defeat the uber-Dalek and then decided that the best way the protect the world against it was to cut it into three bits and send one person with each to random places, alone and then bury it a few inches below the ground? Um, why not escort these people with your big armies? Why the secrecy as to where the parts are buried anyway? Why bury it, why not burn it? Why risk only having a single guard at each site? Why are you guarding it anyway, you've no reason to not think its completely dead? Or did these medieval soldiers somehow know that you could bring it back to life with a UV lamp? Why did one of the custodians get murdered so easily and why were his robbers so stupid as to not steal whatever he was carrying? Or at least check to see if it was worth stealing? Did anyone have a clue what any of their intentions or motivations were? Its easy to keep going. * Why did parts of the Dalek armour end up in some random storage location with a single guard who looked like he'd been plucked out of the queue at the job centre just after finishing his A-levels? * Why was this published on the open internet so the Dalek could find this info from a home laptop? *Why wasn't there anything useful there that it could use to help rebuild its armour? Why was a random farm with a hot poker and an oil drum better? * Why did it decide not to kill Lin once it was done with her? * Why did it randomly land and shoot up some soldiers instead of going straight to the GCHQ? What was with that GCHQ location "reveal" text? * How was the Dalek able to expertly gun down a bunch of soldiers and shoot a shell out the air, but couldn't hit the Doctor and co once they'd hidden behind it? * How did the microwaves (an energy that superheats water molecules) manage to melt the Dalek's armour, but the creature inside managed to not only survive, but make it out, sneak around the room and jump on Ryan's dad without being spotted? * Why does Chibnall have so little understanding of how gravity works? Why is the Doctor such an incompetent idiot in putting Ryan’s Dad’s life at risk? Its not just Chibber's bad pacing that kills momentum, its also Jodie's at best, mediocre delivery that kills all tension. Why can't she do serious? Why can't she exude authority? I've no idea, but she makes the whole proceedings feel about as worrying as having forgotten to pack your kids sandwiches before sending them off to school. She can't even redeem it with the some of the more lighter, comedy parts as she just comes off as a little irritating, as opposed to being exuberant and endearing. I honest to god have no idea why she was hired for this part, as I find her performance to fail on every level. I've been patient with her in the past and I've even been kind enough to say that I believe she may be a good actor, but just unsuited to this role. But the more I see of her, the more I'm starting to think she's just a very one-note actor. Now you can get away with that, if you can make it up with charisma. But Jodie doesn't even have that. She's bland at best and irritating at worst. Still, she's better than Ryan, I'll give her that. He's opening up to his dad about how abandoned and unloved her felt. He says the words, but there's not a drop of emotion in his voice. Not a single change in expression other than "open mouth," or "close mouth." Why should I care about his character's plight if the character himself doesn't seem to care? Same with his dad about to get blown out into space (solid plan, by the way, Doc. You really thought out all the potential consequences there, didn't you) Oh no! "Dad I love you," drearily monotones its way out of Ryan's mouth. Plus the fact, it was the Dad, not Ryan, holding on for dear life that had to reach for his rescue, no Chibs - you write it so it is Ryan that does the reach, it’s called character development. What happened to the drama in Doctor Who, where we actually gave a crap about any of these undeveloped characters? What can I say about Yaz? She was there. She said things now and then. Why does Chibnall seem to neglect her so much that he can't be bothered to actually write for her character? Bradders stole the show once again. yadda yadda, exactly the same thing as said for the rest of series 11. The music was dreadful, too. So some improvements, but the major faults are all still there. Frankly, Lin carried the episode, as it was all her performance that added the tension, scares and threat (even if her character was dumb as a brick by going up to a giant squid on a wall and thinking "I should probably touch that."). I’ll see how I feel when the show comes back for series 12, but right no I have no enthusiasm for it at all.

I switched off after having watched less than 6 minutes and hearing a few things on Nerdrotic. Right, so a bunch of iron-age people defeated a fucking Dalek. Impressive! How did they do that? They cut him up in 3 parts. Great choice! But why not fucking BURN it or toss it into the ocean with some stoned tied to it and perhaps blood covering it to make it more attractive to sharks? Ah, one of the guys who carried it got shot. They searched his body for 0.6 seconds and totally ignored the package that he had in his hands that he was in such a hurry for. The body was on a path that apparently didn't get any new traffic until our mandatory interracial love interest dug it up 1200 years later and the 1/3rd Dalek displayed regenerative superpowers that none of them ever have shown before. Riiiight, and that's when I switched it off.

ikr! Why not just burn the damn thing? It was such an obvious solution we actually had to pause it and explain to my mum that the bags weren't filled with ashes, just body parts... Because she automatically assumed you'd just burn the thing to make sure it stays dead.
@MarcelNL
5 жыл бұрын
@@__-fm5qv HAHA! Wow, that says a LOT that it actually needed this explaination! But this really is the writing of this entire season. I've watched Punjab, Kerblam, Witchfinders and the season's finale entirely and this one only for a few minutes like I said, but each episode gave me SO many questions. Why couldn't the cop and the 2000 year old anti-gun alien see a bullet wound in that holy man and could the sonic screwdriver not detect a lead bullet in the corpse? Why was the key of those mud-aliens shaped like a tree billions of years ago while there were no humans around to see it AND does it burn like normal wood and can it be cut like normal wood (which suggests that it also can erode) and why wasn't it covered in layers upon layers of sand after all that time? Why did that lady chop that tree down herself (with a modern-day hardware store axe by the way) instead of letting one of her servants do it for her? Why couldn't Jodie identify the shrunken planets with their nearly unlimited density while in Punjab she already had seen dust with the same properties that was from a destroyed planet? And why didn't that dust crush the holy man that it was put on and instead just floated around a bit? Why was that dust on that holy man while those aliens demanded the stolen dust back from Jodie? And that shrunken planet: why did Jodie say that she doesn't mind blowing up replacable things like a door and then slapped those bombs on this mysterious irreplacable item that completely puzzled her? Yeah as a threat so she wouldn't get killed on the spot, but it wasn't exactly something like a door, now was it? And so, SO many more things..... Sure, in previous seasons not everything made perfect sense either but you barely paid attention to those things because the rest of the storyline and the acting and everything else was just brilliant so you could forgive these slightly weaker moments that helped advance the plot a bit.

It's like Chibbers is putting up a big sign - Come to the UK everything is free for those with the will to take it as our security is rubbish. Jodie Whittaker doesn’t even have a FRACTION of the wit, charm, emotion, and gravitas that an actor playing the Doctor requires. The sad part is, I bet she’s giving it her all. Yet I’m not really sure who’s to blame: her, or the writers, who have sucked all of the emotion, joy, and intrigue of the seasons preceding. Also they really need to inject more color into the next season, which is ironic considering how colorful the poster is for this season. Honestly, this season could’ve been in black and white, it was that drab. However, The ONE good idea (TO ME) that came out of this episode was that the Daleks can control humans. It gives them a much more horror-esque edge that they had otherwise lost. The scenes where that woman is trying to fight against it while it taunts her were to me actually very engaging

But he can't because he sucks and would rather write about racist aliens. He shouldn't even call himself a writer, he's fucking useless. I doubt he's even capable of writing a two-parter. I think you were a bit harsh this time. The whole Dalek control of the woman was well done with a great fun bit with the Police and a decent fight with the army. Walsh played his part well, and the "bad dad" bit wasn't badly done. I quite liked the scrapheap dalek and the "squid". I even think it was made clear that this was a much earlier dalek than the one encountered in "Dalek". It was stated it was "one of the first to leave Skaro", daleks have evolved a lot since then. The downsides for me were most scenes including the doctor, the ancient alien defeated by early humans (Stargate anyone?) and the fact that the records police officer just had to make a point that he was gay even though he was only on screen for 30 seconds. (for the record I really don't mind if he is cis, gay trans, non-biery or anything else just that he had to make a point of it)

Let's not forget we're supposed to believe that the custodian who was shot from his horse landed in the middle of what looked like a fairly frequented trail and was simply left there - with all his belongings intact - to be buried slowly over time by whatever stuff was eventually piled on top of his body. The thieves who shot him (if that's what they were) gave him a cursory prod to make sure he was dead, conveniently ignored the wrapped up Dalek parts, and scarpered. Surely, someone noticed the body in the middle of the road at some point between 9BC and 2019? Or did he turn into a weird looking traffic island? The remaining two didn't do much better, burying their Dalek pieces about 1 foot down on a beach, or in the snow, where any idiot with a metal detector could easily stumble upon them. Sure, we're supposed to accept that marking the spots with stones or shrine-looking thingys, and placing a single guard on them, would be enough to keep marauders away from a spot they so clearly advertised. And, if the individual pieces of the Dalek from the island and Siberia could teleport themselves to the location in Sheffield, why did the resurrected Dalek need the girl to carry it around like she was some kind of Uber driver for displaced aliens? All in all, this episode wasn't as bad as some in this series, but only in a relative sense.

This had so much potential to be a potential two-parter or stimuli for season 12. If only the Dalek has called his buddies, perhaps an awesome war? Dalek infilitration in the government over the course of a season? An overarching series arc? Nope. He wraps it all up in a shitty little bag in the last 7 minutes. This episode had *so much potential* but it baited us so many times. The bit when Aaron almost gets sucked out, would’ve been so good, had he actually got killed as it would’ve been an actually impactful death, especially for Ryan. But that would be much too interesting for Chibs huh?

It's episodes like this that make me really sad about how much wasted potential is being used here. Graham is honestly a fantastic companion in my eyes and had some genuinely great scenes in this episode 'they left without me :(' But for every scene with Graham we get 2 with Ryan with his disability that he can turn off and on whenever it suits the story, his dad that might as well of been a walking advertisement for Chib's daddy issues, Yas who is about as impactful as UNIT this episode and a thoroughly cringy performance from Whitaker doing her trademark budget Tennant impression. I still can't get over UNIT being disbanded for a fucking joke, a group that has been a part of Doctor Who from it's near creation. It's like if in a Simpsons episode they just shut down the nuclear power plant permanently for a joke.

What's even more ridiculous is that Chibnall wrote The Power of Three which reintroduced UNIT and Kate Lethbridge Stewart. So he's such a bad showrunner that his desire to ignore everything that came before now even applies to his stories!

What is perhaps even more ridiculous than humans with swords and spears defeating a dalek is the fact that in a matter of hours with scrap metal, some huge ass cogs and a scrap yard that it was able to make a fully functioning shell -whether it looked bad or not. How the f does it fly? Do cogs have magical properties now? And even a competent blacksmith would take weeks to beat out that much metal. Not even mentioning the eye stalk.

Four people and a Police Box appear out of thin air, tell you this sewer and archeological dig site is off limits and quarantined, and the two scientists both say "ok" and calmly walk away 🤦♂️ this steaming pile of failure has come full circle. Bring back Philip Hinchcliffe, multiple episode stories, no earth based garbage, actual sci-fi writers and an actor with more range than just silly faces and flat attempts at light humor. This new show isn't Doctor Who, and this so called season is the nail in the coffin of 13 years of mediocrity. bright spots here and there, but burn it down and start again.

P Ferreira at the risk of upsetting the SJW feminists. Mandip Gill is attractive, but her character this season has been totally useless and unbelievable as a law enforcement officer. Surprising when she complained that she had to prove to citizens that she’s an officer capable of doing her job. Fire Chinballs and Whittaker now. Let Jodie do comicon in 5 years from now when this dies down. We are stuck with her legacy forever. Let that horrible thought sink in.

Plus, Yaz discovered a dead body and didn't take a few seconds to phone it in; she just leaves it where it is and fucks off with the Doctor... she's meant to be a fucking COP. The dead dude has a family and a dead body lying in the open needs to be logged. This is the point where her character finally becomes non-existent. Take a moment to reinforce to us who she is and what's important to her!

Anyone else noticed how they PLAGIARISED Tennant’s line about the Dalek’s always returning while he loses everything? Naturally the delivery fell completely flat compared to Tennant. This is the third episode in a row that introduces a universal level threat that was previously unheard of. Makes complete sense since Chiballs wanted to get the series back down to earth. Also if Ryan, his dad or both had died at the end the entire series would’ve been redeemed. This is a Doctor who is desperate to have her “fam” and needs them but if they died it would’ve shown how far the Doctor was willing to go for victory and her hatred against the Daleks, it would dethrone Adric’s death. Also, Whittaker has had three moments where says “I am the Doctor” and all three fell flat + she cannot be threatening I miss God-Emperors Capaldi and Moffat.

Know what also doesn't make sense about having any show on New Years? Usually families stay in for Christmas, but on New Years everyone usually goes out. It won't be back in 2020. The last days of Sylvester McCoy seem glorious compared to whatever this show is. It won't be back. The BBC have made this so bad, it'll be easier to cancel. It'll save a ton of funding to be used elsewhere.
