Agreed, it really stands out from an era that has many great stories

It's my understanding that Tom Baker wanted to do a story without a companion in it, so they gave him "The Deadly Assassin", which is a favorite of mine because it focuses on the Doctor almost entirely. The scene where the Doctor is nearly drowned by his pursuer caused an uproar in Britain. Since actor Bernard Horsefall (1930 - 2013) had appeared in so many prior "Doctor Who" serials, he was doubtless so well known to the show's producers that he was cast as Chancellor Goth. I loved the Time Lords' costuming, and in particular I so loved the Doctor's poet's shirt that I wanted one for myself!

Love this episode, my only criticism with this story and most others on gallifrey during the 70s and 80s is that the timelords are just not as creepy and meanicing as they were in The War Games, great review!

Thanks! And I get that criticism, it's certainly a different portrayal which does demystify them, for better or worse. But regardless, there's lots to love within the story.

The casting of Chancellor Goth is almost certainly intentional, as both this story and 'The War Games' were directed by David Maloney (who had, incidentally, directed 'The Mind Robber' and 'Planet Of The Daleks', both also featuring Bernard Horsfall).

If it is, indeed, Goth who pronounced sentence at the end of The War Games, it gives much credence to his animosity towards The Doctor in The Deadly Assassin. In both cases, he's looking to hasten the end of The Doctor's life by forcing him to regenerate when it's not in response to massive trauma.

The Deadly Assassin is first time we get see Gallifrey Society. Although i thought Guard costumes were extraordinary Buck Roger's like...

Doctor who does political thriller. A lot of Robert Holmes’s script is great and very different though a tad slow at times. I find it odd that some time lords die but don’t regenerate. Also no one recognizes the doctor considering the events of war games and three doctors. You’d think after saving them from omega they’d be more grateful. While some complain that this story makes the time lords less imposing and weaker compared to their first appearance, I say they’ve always been like that and simply made themselves seem so imposing. They were powerful but that never meant they were gods. Then omega’s attack severely weakened them but never showed or admitted it. Then planet of the daleks worried them leading to genesis. The master’s attack here proves it and some other species here about and we get the invasion of time. Then every subsequent appearance keeps showing their declining power and all leading to the time war.

Yeah, I'd have to say I agree with this. It feels like a pretty natural evolution of the Time Lords in terms of how they're portrayed. You worded it very well, it's not at odds with what came before, but it does show the reality of their power more than prior stories.

@@DalamReviews I compare fan complaints over how they’re portrayed to that of how Star Wars fans felt about how the Jedi were portrayed in the prequels compared to the original trilogy. The original trilogy, from what kenobi and yoda said, made them seem as perfect, while the prequels showed the flaws that were never discussed. Some fans see it as a betrayal but I see it as simply looking at it from one angle and letting what came before dictate how they should be.

Something that you didn't mention that I felt was odd in watching this episode: No one on Gallifrey knew who the Master is and barely no one knew of the Doctor himself. That's weird to me. Overall, though, great episode,

I really enjoyed this one. The fact that the whole look of the Time lords came from here via (Oscar winner) James Acheson's superb Time Lord collars is just wonderful.

Absolutely, it's a very distinctive visual look for the Time Lords, and really fits with how they're presented in here.

I agree the lack of women in the story is problematic for a so-called advanced society, but one could view it as part of the elitism of the Time Lord society as viewed through the lens of the '70s.

My favourite DW serial of all time (TALONS is my second favourite). This serial also features my favourite version of the Master. Peter Pratt did a splendid job with the part. I wish Peter Pratt’s Master had returned for THE KEEPER OF TRAKEN - with Geoffrey Beevers instead only supplying the voice of the Melkur statue. I’m not a fan of the Beevers TRAKEN Master at all. It was a mistake to dispense with the latex mask, and use the actor’s face and eyes. The makeup looks poor (the penciled-on teeth, over ther actor’s lips, looks especially poor). Peter Pratt’s Master was the creepiest of the bunch, imo. Yes, the latex mask with the bulging eyes, and shredded potato sack hood and cloak are visually very impressive - a stunning new look for the character. A classic serial!

Again for me i find this story another that dosen't quite live up to it's reputation, apart from some good scripts and great scenes in the matrix. But i find stories set on gallifrey to be pretty dull and don't quite like seeing too much of the doctor's home planet and people. Long gone are the mysterious, sinister god like beings with powers the doctor feared so much in 'The war games' and for the rest of classic who the timelords just seem like a bunch of bickering old men, They even have an earth style tv reporter lol 6/10

Robert Holmes wanted the time lords to be a one gender race allegedly. Hence all men. They later ignore that it in the classic series.
