River sacrificed herself so The Doctor wouldn't, cause the strain of doing so (he was basically, hooking himself into the computer like a battery) would have killed him, like permanently so(burning up both hearts at once means he'd be unable to regenerate). Which would have caused some wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff since, River knows him from his future/her past, but if he dies HERE, it means all those meetings never happened, which would create one hell of a paradox. He can't die in her last meeting with him, when their "first" meeting (from her perspective) hasn't happened yet. It's easier to understand if you imagine them running on opposite timelines, River's last meeting w/ The Doctor is his first meeting with her. So her FIRST meeting with him will happen a lot later in him timeline. And he can't die before that happens. Which is why River sacrificed herself here.

River sacrificed herself because the computer was too overloaded with people to properly function and successfully re-materialize them as it simply needed more memory. Likely because it already was connected to a human mind the Doctor believed he could wire himself in so that it could use his brain as more memory space but River knowing it would kill him to the point not even regeneration could save him chose to take his place. As far as the whole is saving River by trapping her in a simulation a kindness or not question I’d argue it wasn’t really a kindness yet it’s not because her consciousness was put in a computer. The imprint is described as footprints on the beach because they’re traces of the person’s mind left behind in the tech not their real mind. When the Doctor “saved” River he was essentially making a digital copy of her as the real River Song had already died and I feel it’s for his benefit more so than hers. It likely helps with the guilt over not being able to save her and some part of his mind can always say she’s still out there… until the library’s mainframe eventually breaks down as nothing last forever.

You guys are fast becoming the highlight of my week. Coincidentally, the creators of original Doctor Who introduced a virtual world called the matrix way back in 1976! Their version of the matrix was revisited in multiple stories. Thanks so much for keeping me entertained.

Doctor Who established that the Time Lords have a hyper advanced computer (that you can enter and experience simulations) called The Matrix back in 1976 already. They were way ahead of the game when it came to The Matrix lol
@R.senals_Arsenal
3 ай бұрын
Many Time Lords take on other names, The Doctor, The Master, you saw Ncuti mention in Space Babies: The Bishop, The Rani, The Conquistador. This does not mean all TLs do, just some of the more pretentious ones. Or it could be they all choose names and only some of them go by them. There were TLs in Classic WHO who went by given names: Maxil, Andred, Rodan, Hedin, Flavia, Thalia, Borusa, etc. I love River Song, I'm glad you did too, and yeah, the Doctor's name is a closely guarded secret. In expanded media there is an 8th Doc story that has this little creature in it that knows everything. The Doctor tests it, asks it higher math questions, what caused a nebula and the little thing answered it was the destruction of a Dalek Time Vessel, little thing is SHARP! Then the Doctor asks: "What is my name?" and he stopped that lil thing dead in it's tracks! He asked the one question the thing didn't know!! So yeah, this was great, I love it, I'm here for it, I love DW lore but also love that we'll never know.

Another great reaction! I agree with Rekkai that the previous episode is stronger, I feel like it sets the atmosphere of mystery perfectly, and all those questions it raises demands satisfying answers, which I feel this episode tried to do, but the mysteries were so well laid-out that it was a near impossible task to wrap everything up perfectly. I do like the twist that the millionaire businessman was actually protecting his family, and not proprietary information; it felt like, because Voyage of the Damned left us with the self-absorbed millionaire as the sole survivor, at least this time the sole survivor doesn't leave a sour taste. His genuine joy at seeing all the people Cal saved was kind of sweet...as long as you don't think too hard on the fact that those lives were restored at the cost of the entire expedition team he brought with him. I kind of feel bad for those people, too, because they'd been in the matrix for 100 years... they're going to go back home and find all the people they knew are long gone. Not quite on the scale of displacement caused by the Snap, but still... I think it's an interesting question with no right answer, whether uploading her consciousness into the computer was a kindness. I don't personally have a defined idea of what the afterlife entails, and often entertain multiple possibilities at once. The computer simulation could be a better alternative, and at the least I think it's a kindness for Cal, that she isn't alone, and can live as a little girl with other consciousnesses playing familial roles for her (she was the one in the third bed). I don't think I would want an existence like that myself, though. Life is precious because it's real, and I don't think existence in a simultion is the same as living, no matter how well it replicates it. Cannot wait for the next one, which is possibly my favorite episode of DW? It's one I often find myself reflecting on, and the acting in it is superb. I think you're going to really enjoy it! (Also eoisode 11 I think may answer some questions that were raised in this video, so looking forward to that too!!)

So many great concepts in this story. This is perhaps not Steven's best script but some very original ideas. Having a future partner of the Doctor meet him for the first time (him) and the last time (her) is both awful and awesome. And a cruel heartbreak for Donna too. Donna's role, I think, was summarised when she met him. The Doctor needs someone to keep him grounded; he needs someone to help him keep his 'humanity'. She keeps him light-hearted with quips/teasing and is determined to pull his sympathies in situations where we might say 'leave it alone' and be objective (pompei ep). Her role, I think is wasn't coincidental (Rose), or perseverance through heartache (Martha). She doesn't have any romantic interest in him, but the adventures she goes through are consuming. Her initial contact with the doctor wasn't a happy one. She saw him at his lowest (arguably his loneliest), and she knowingly chose a role to 'support while adventuring'. Previous companions went adventuring and then provided support with some added attraction, keeping them invested. Donna is empathetic & sarcastic. She doesn't have heart eyes and blinders when she picked her role; two lonely people building a strong friendship to keep them both strong.

Feel free to delay things if you're not feeling up to it that particular day. Also, to Rekkai, you're right that Martha was in Torchwood. It was the second half of season 2 (which takes place during DW season 4 but before the finale). She was supposed to be in season 3, but it didn't work out with Freema's schedule, so Martha never actually "joined" Torchwood and stayed an agent for UNIT. It's a crying shame, really...

Just getting onto the subject regarding the sonic screwdriver in Classic Who it was never really this "big" thing it use to be a device simply to unscrew lock doors when the Doctor tries to escape when he's captured or used to blow up bases it did no more than that but still became an iconic tool like MacGyver's pocket knife. The problem with New Who today is the sonic screwdriver has been so overused it's now used like a gun, a wand, a communicator and even a voice recorder which is just starting to get beyond silly at this point so much so where you want the thing destroyed in the new Ncuti Gatwa era instead of RTD turning the sonic screwdriver into a sonic mouse and since he apparently thinks the sonic screwdriver looks too much like a gun an opinion of his which I do not agree with RTD at all he's become over sensitive and really overthinks things far too much now he could had just not have the sonic screwdriver at all and just have Ncuti's Doctor use his wit rather than the sonic screwdriver which I was really hoping they would do but sadly it didn't happen. There's alot of devisive choices RTD is making in the new era of Disney Dr. Who fans are not happy about it's a complete departure from what went on pre-Disney Who. The RTD1 era was his bestest era even though I was not a big fan of the soap opera aspects of it.

Yea the ending to this one is a bit weird. Because its all about perspective and definitely a philosophical debate to be had. I kinda view the matrix in this one to be like the holodec in star trek. they have access to all these stories they can read and they could basically change the virtual world to anything they wanted it to be. The version that was hosting the saved was kinda more like the actual matrix movies where everyone was being kept in the dark to the reality of their situation. So you would think in theory this would allow the person to choose when they were ready to be deleted from the system... but then would that choice of deletion be the same as doing that act in real life? because depending on your beliefs that is a sin... but then there is also the idea and difference between our soul or consciousness. Is what is stored in the computer the peoples souls? or is it just a copy of their memories and personality. So their soul would have already moved on from the physical world to whatever after life may or may not exist. So what remains of them is just a shadow of them not in anyway really them? Either way it was meant to be a good ending despite being like "yea i saved their essence by trapping them in this computer..... till it breaks down anyway....." ive always been mixed on if i would want to die before i become to old to care for myself or live as long as i possible could just to see what the future holds.
