I've seen people comment about sound and overly loud music since the show returned in 2005. I don't doubt that they may have had issues but not once have I had a problem with it. I always wonder what setup they are watching it on.

God awful TV speakers one would assume. Luckily I have been rocking surround sound since 98 and the onset of dvds. My main issuewith asylum of the daleks is that it suits the cybermen much better than the daleks. Daleks dont convert people. They Exterminate them. It makes more sense for the cybermen. Also, the cybermen have a better reason to even have an asylum. (Cybermen with a broken emotional inhibitor) the daleks should just exterminate mad daleks. And I think that "Asylum of the Cybermen" would such an amazing title.
@HereComesPopoBawa

Daleks definitely have a history of converting people, from at least the 1980s, and picking up again in the 2005 finale. I get that it makes a contrast with their xenophobia, some body horror and depersonalization of the converted. So there is a lot of precedent, but I agree that both villains tend to be made too interchangeable and often not used very well.
@Cowmoo83
4 жыл бұрын
Popo Bawa I agree that the Daleks work much better when their hatred and superiority over all other species is the focus. But the precedent to convert-or at least hypnotize-humans into Dalek puppets goes way back to season 2 in 1964 with “The Dalek Invasion of Earth. I’d argue a natural step up from what was done in that episode is the full conversion we see in newer series that can be done thanks to better special effects. Not saying I particularly enjoy that aspects of the Daleks...but it’s definitely a part of the DW “canon” (whatever that is...).

"Once he's seen their graves he knows when they die" No he does not! He knows that there is a grave put up eventually in the 80s' but it could just as easily be an empty grave or the Doctor could have had them buried there after they did die later in life. Sorry but the ending of Angels Take Manhattan was incredibly stupid. All they had to do was leave New York and have him pick them up in another location. The whole idea of "if I read it than it must happen" was just stupid and put in to justify the ending. I've said before and I've said again the ending could have been fixed by having the Doctor attempt to travel to New York at a slightly later point in time but screw up again and come back to late to find them settled down and they decide to stay in the past.
@Companion92

Was there not something mentioned in the Christopher Eccelston era where he can't use the tardis in events he's interacted with already? Like with the episode 'The Girl in the Fireplace' the Doctor can't go pick up Madame de Pompadour before she died to see the stars because he's already been involved with those events in the past. Although I think this rule is there just to be convenient for the writers of each individual episode.
@orsonlepherd7064
2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply but the episode actually answers all of these potential plot holes. For one, it's made black and white that New York is full of time fluctuations from all kinds of events that the doctor has fixed, and that doubled with the powerful paradox that Rory and Amy created by jumping off the rooftop meant that the doctor couldn't go back to New York at all. Their grave meant that they were buried together, as they would have been buried in a time where nobody would have their birth records or info, so it would have had to have been confirmed that they were, indeed, buried together. Once the doctor saw the grave, it became a fixed point. He knew that even if he could get into New York by travelling somewhere else and entering by foot, having them create another paradox would tear New York apart , killing thousands.

...AND especially the other, non-Who projects Moffat was juggling at the time. IMO "showrunner" should not be A Thing, they need a producer, a script editor, and writers. Combining these is not a great idea. But when they do hire a showrunner, they should write into the contract that that person is married to the show for that time, so they don't spread their efforts too thin.

My personal issue with Asylum, is Pond Life. If, the pond life shorts were apart of an actual episode, and not just hidden away on the doctor who website, then it could have been great. Instead, the characters change massively away from the episode run, and then change back, like a reset button, by the end of the episode. So what is the point of that dynamic, if it is just rushed, and used for shock, at the start of the season. No build-up, no pay-off, no point. Otherwise, the episode is pretty good.

I don't like how the Ponds went out in The Angels take Manhattan. I also think they should have been around for the start of the Impossible Girl mystery, meaning the moment that the Doctor realizes something is wrong. I think them and Clara should have been together for a couple of episodes before they are lost. Shuffle some episodes around if you want, it could work. Then in Time of the Doctor, the Ponds come back in the flesh by the Doctor pulling them through the crack in the wall. Of course, they won't be sticking around once the Doctor regenerates. He'll send them off home.

I hate Asylum of the Daleks for one reason, the conversion of humans into Daleks. Firstly, it makes them really really hard to differentiate from the Cybermen, who thanks to their new catch phrase already had a touch of the "we're like the daleks" problem. But more importantly, its established pretty firmly that while you can make Daleks from human tissue doing so is a last resort for them. The emperor did it because he was the literal last dalek in existence and he needed a new army and doing so drove the daleks insane, just at the idea that they came from human cells. When Dalek Sec initiated the idea the rest of the Cult of Skaro destroyed him for it. In classic who they were prepared to infect humans with "the dalek factor" just to subdue them but there weren't plans for making them full Daleks. I can sort of excuse the human converted drones as we have some precedent for that but them turning Clara into an actual dalek is where I draw the line. They were disgusted at the idea of a dalek with a single human cell, why would they harvest an entire human mind?

I honestly would rank the episodes almost exactly the same way as you based on my memory of them. It's also my least-favorite series of New Who. I know I watched "Hide" again because I dig the atmosphere, but there's a decent chance I've never watched any of the others a second time -- my DVD box set still has the shrink wrap on. Most of the decent ones have a major element dragging them down... like I thought Power of Three was shaping up to be an all-timer until it fell apart in the last 5 minutes. I'm doing a rewatch of the whole thing myself so I'm about to see these again for the first time in 7/8 years. I'm interested to see if my opinion changes.

My ranking: 14. Nightmare in Silver- Those kids. Those fucking kids! Nothing about this one worked for me. 13. The Power of Three- While the first half has some great and funny moments, the cube storyline is so stupid. The Shakri were forgettable and the ending is incredibly rushed. You could only imagine my shock when I found out that the man who wrote this episode would become showrunner. 12. Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS- I really love that we got to see more of the TARDIS this episode. This alone makes up for the many flaws in this episode. 11. Cold War- Not much to say about this one. The Ice Warriors are back and that’s cool. I love the Soviet submarine setting. Not much to talk about. It was fine. 10. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship- This one was fun. That’s it. Good old fashioned fun. Not the show’s most fun episode but it’s still a good time. 9. The Rings of Akhaten- People need to stop acting like the speech is the entire episode. The speech is phenomenal. One of my favorite moments from the show. The rest of the episode is decent. 8. Asylum of the Daleks- Not the strongest opener. I really don’t like Amy and Rory’s divorce storyline. But I do like Oswin and I think that the Daleks in this episode are actually scary. Unfortunately, the episode was a bit underwhelming considering it’s concept. 7. The Crimson Horror- Gatiss’ best episode. Not really saying much though. I really like the Paternoster Gang in this episode. It’s all around fun and I’m glad we had more time with Vastra, Jenny and Strax. 6. The Bells of Saint John- Not the greatest companion introduction but a good story nonetheless. The Great Intelligence and Ms. Kizlet are really good villains. It’s a better version of The Idiot’s Lantern, an episode that I will defend until the day I die. 5. The Name of the Doctor- Not the best finale but not the worst. The whole idea of the Doctor breaking into his own grave is awesome. The Great Intelligence is a good villain for this episode. The Paternoster Gang work pretty well here. This was also the end to the Impossible Girl story arc which I didn’t care for much. But overall, a solid finale. 4. Angels Take Manhattan- Does this episode make absolutely no sense? Yes. Do I care? No. The emotional elements make up for the nonsensical elements of the plot. Amy and Rory’s goodbye makes me cry every time. 3. A Town Called Mercy- I adore this episode! And I’m glad it’s finally getting the love it deserves in the comments here. The themes are strong, the Wild West setting is awesome, and the characters. Criminally underrated. 2. The Snowmen- My absolute favorite Christmas special. Every single second of it was fun. Victorian Clara is the best Clara. Plus, The Great Intelligence was a great callback. 1. Hide- Most underrated episode of the entire show! Everything works for me. The setting, the characters, the monster, the story, etc. I love how it starts off as a ghost story, then it becomes a rescue mission, and then a love story. One of the highlights of Smith’s era that is often overlooked.

Asylum is just a huge waste of time. It's Amy and Rory's marriage counselling with some Daleks in the background. I think the Amy and Rory stuff isn't strictly bad, and given proper time and exploration, it could be a good thing to explore, but it shouldn't come at the expense of a whole episode like that.

Huh, I get to have the 100th and 200th comment, in keeping with my tradition of commenting way too late despite no one actually reading what I have to say as a consequence. I think the Statue of Angel (Weeping Liberty, Lady Angel, Angelica, whatever you want to call it) is absolutely bonkers and makes no sense but that's exactly why it works for me. I used to have a lot of nightmares when I was little, and the ones that would really mess with me were the ones that just simply didn't make sense - shoes moving on their own, things flying out of the sky, etc. so absolutely wild stuff like the entire Statue of Liberty running around and causing massive booms around the city is just horrific to me. Sure, it makes zero sense at all how everyone could have their eyes off one of the most famous landmarks in one of the biggest cities in the world, but that kind of ties into the insanity anyways. I get if it's just a massive miss for a lot of people though.

Re A Town Called Mercy - I like Amy calling the Doctor on going overboard because he's been traveling alone, as well as the call back to Amy being a mom. Always got the feeling that the Doctor had a hard time with this one because of his own past and the things he's had to do over time in order to do what he felt was right.

A Town Called Mercy is one of my favorite episodes of all time. Definitely top ten, borderline top five. I would recommend watching Harbo Wholmes' video on it which explains why some of us adore it. Meanwhile I hate Asylum of the Daleks with a passion, in fact it is my least favorite episode besides the Timeless Child stuff. I think it is actually well made and does what it's trying to do well, I just despise everything it's trying to do, mostly with what they did with the Daleks. Otherwise my list is almost the same.

Ah, it’s nice to see I’m not the only one who just wasn’t feeling it with this series. I like some of it, but so many of the episodes are just kinda there that I was afraid I might just not be getting it somehow. I’m very much looking forward to the 50th anniversary thing, though, and from what I’ve heard, that’s going to be awesome.

I really like "The Snowmen", although I agree more or less with what you have to say about it. The overall story isn't great, but it includes a whole bunch of classic scenes that are good to watch, so I rewatch it now and then. It's the best version of Clara that we get, and I like the Paternoster Gang, even though I'm a bit uncomfortable with milking Strax for comic effect so relentlessly. He's supposed to be a warrior; in theory, it should be dangerous to offend him.

I actually love Asylum of the Daleks, and might be my choice for best episode of Season 7. Now, I think a lot of why I appreciate it so much is because I actually agree with many that some of the central premises are...questionable, if not somewhat dubious, however the story's execution is near-perfect. It's scary, it's funny, it's fast-paced, has a LOT of clever twists, multiple instances of escalating tension, and the final dramatic moments are genuinely impactful. While it's flawed from a central-conceit perspective, it has numerous moments that showcase the power of Moffat's intense imagination.

Like Series 6, I also found Series 7 to be a disappointingly mixed series, but for completely different reasons. This was very much a series of two halves for me and I didn't mind that Moffat was attempting something a bit different by making each episode a "blockbuster of the week" type of story at first. The first half in 2012 was very strong and was starting to win me back a bit, but when the 2013 half arrived with the proper Clara getting introduced with the whole "Impossible Girl" story arc, it all went down the drain from there. There wasn't anything bold or ambitious going on, Clara was a walking plot device, and while I loved 'The Name of the Doctor' and have a soft spot for 'Hide', 'Cold War' and 'The Crimson Horror', everything else ranged from mediocre to downright terrible. Overall, for a series that was meant to be the series that would herald in the 50th Anniversary, this was a major letdown and is definitely one of the weaker seasons of Modern Who. Would've been the weakest, but then Series 11 arrived. My ranking of Series 7 would probably go like this: 1. The Name of the Doctor 2. The Angels Take Manhattan 3. The Snowmen 4. Asylum of the Daleks 5. The Power of Three 6. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship 7. A Town Called Mercy 8. Hide 9. Cold War 10. The Crimson Horror 11. The Rings of Akhaten 12. The Bells of Saint John 13. Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS 14. Nightmare in Silver

Asylum of the daleks is so underrated in my eyes. The pace, ambition and excitement of the episode as an opener gets me every time. Sends shivers down my spine every time. One of favourite episodes of new who. Very nostalgic for this era and Amy, Rory and 11 is my favourite tardis team also. I like the rest of part 1 also. Part 2- the name of the Doctor is the only good episode for me, amazing episode, amazing cliffhanger.

My ranking: 14- Nightmare in Silver. This could have been so good! 4/10 13- Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS. Same goes here. 4/10 12- The Power of Three. Good stuff here, poor execution. 5/10 11- The Crimson Horror. I don’t know what to say here. 5/10 10- The Name of the Doctor. Richard E Grant is good. That’s all I can say. 5/10 9- The Snowmen. Ditto. 6/10 8- Hide. Again, could have been really good, probably needs a rewatch. 6/10 7- Dinosaurs on a Space-Ship. Nothing really happens. 6/10 6- Asylum of the Daleks. What was this story? 6/10 5- The Rings of Akhaten. Really just that speech. 7/10 4- The Bells of Saint John. Not really great. Not really bad. 7/10. 3- Cold War. Ice warriors, Cold War, yay! 7/10 2- The Angels Take Manhattan. Sad if kind of stupid ending. 8/10 1- A Town Called Mercy. I might just love westerns, but this was really good. 8/10

I actually rewatched series 6-9 earlier in the year! I really enjoy the first half of this season. Amy and Rory are better than ever in Dinosaurs, The Power of Three and The Angels Take Manhattan. Most of the episodes have huge issues, but all of the Amy/Rory episodes are really, really fun for me. The second half... yeah, it's rough. I certainly wouldn't have put The Name of the Doctor as high as you did.

I have no problem with numbers 2 and 3. I enjoyed 'Hide' because the Doctor was scared. Maybe that's the fan fiction writer in me but it's a difficult dynamic for a character. It can draw you closer, (OMG the poor Doctor! I'd save him if I could! Thank God (Insert companion here.) is there to help him.) But it can also cause you to feel disappointed in your hero ala "I don't want to go." 'A Nightmare In Silver' was so forgettable for me I honestly didn't know what you were talking about. This is due to me watching DW over and over again but skipping that episode each time after my first viewing. It was subconscious because I kept thinking after seeing still pictures that I must watch it again. 'Nightmare' would be my #14 for that reason.

Only the top 4 episodes out of 14 would I say are actually good episodes. The bottom 2 are some of my least favourite of all time. One of the things I never got with Angels in Manhattan was, okay so the Doctor can't travel back to that exact place and time, but what if Amy and Rory traveled elsewhere? Like when down to Philadelphia, could the Doctor have met up with them then? I mean I get that it is a closed loop and he saw their graves... but in theory... lets say there are no graves so that close loop thing isn't an issue.... Amy & Roy travel outside of Manhattan and somehow leave a message for the Doctor to find them (like in the epilogue of the book he & Amy were reading that set the whole thing off). Could he have travel to them then and rescued them? Or am I missing something?

The only thing I didn't like about 'Asylum of the Daleks' is that the Daleks forget the Doctor. I get that he got too big and famous and needed to be taken down a notch, but I feel that the Daleks should ALWAYS recognise the Doctor, just like he should always recognise them (one of my favourite moments is the testimony scene from 'Victory of the Daleks' - "I am your enemy! And you are mine!".)

I don't know if this is controversial, but to me, Series 7 is the worst one in all of new Who so far. It's not even that it has the worst episodes, but as you said, it has no great ones. It's like every episodes is just a 5/10; neither great nor particularly awful. Even the finale, which is probably the best episode of this series is nowhere close to the best finales they've had in modern DW. To that point, I couldn't honestly tell you how I'd rank these episodes. I just rewatched it and I struggle to remember half of them. It's a pity because Matt Smith is as good as ever in his last full series, as are Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan. And frankly, Jenna Louise Coleman does a lot of good work, even if she's burdened with being introduced as a plot device instead of as a real character. Hell, the family she stays with with those kids are easily the most forgettable domestic characters ever, and they actually do go along on an adventure. And honestly, while I don't think Moffat's era ever got quite this weak again, it was a tipping point for my otherwise high opinion of his work. Frankly, I don't think he ever reached the same highs he achieved in his first two seasons...

i really liked most of series 7. the only episode i found mediocre was nightmare in silver. i loved the rest. the snowmen was amazing, i thought modern day clara was better with 11 than with 12. i thought two young faces (the doctor isnt young but 11 was only 26-30 at the time) worked better than and young and an old face. 11 and clara just worked better.

I remember enjoying this series when it aired, though there are a few stories I don't remember well (Journey to the Center of the TARDIS being the main one). Crimson Horror is one of my favorites of the series - Victoriana, Paternoster Gang, DIANA RIGG.... I see the issues with it, but I still adore it. And I would definitely have Asylum of the Daleks that high on my list - it has so many classic Daleks in cameo roles, and for me, just seeing them all in the background is enough. Amy's strange pseudo-Dalek haze with the ballroom dancers is really interesting. Oswin is AMAZING!!! And the Ponds' storyline makes sense to me. It shows the repercussions of series 6's story arc with Amy and River, and shows that time has passed for Amy and Rory - enough that this has become a huge elephant in the room. It feels like a real and natural progression for the characters, which makes their reunion and reconciliation all the better for me.

Hi, I just watched your video called 'Doctor Who Dangling Plot Thread: The Time Agency', you uploaded last year. I was just wondering due to the revelations of Series 12 regarding the reveal of ''The Division'' and the return of Capt. The only ones that i like is name of the doctor (probably the only really good episode but like all great episodes from the clara era, it would have been better if i cared about clara), the snowmen (had the best clara and evil snowmen and some good comedic moments and some great dark moments) and dinosaurs on a spaceship (it's not great and has problems but it's a fun concept and works as a standalone stoty). And the first half of the power of three but that story dropped the ball on the ending so badly thatvit drags down what could have been a great story to one that just sucks. Over all i just hate this series, amy and rory should have not come back, clara should have been introduced earlier so we actually know her (although considering how much her character changes we probably still wouldn't know her) and that whole dalek episode (it's great that you like it) just makes no sense, just the concept and the whole parliment thing and for some reason amy and rory are dragged back in and for some reason they aren't together and it is a stupid misunderstanding that gets resolved by them having a single conversation and ruins their great ending in god complex (that was thematically where they should have left).

My personal least favourite series. For me, 11 gets worse as the seasons go by, it's the most bland version of Clara, and the pretentiously whimsical tone has never been so overt. There's little I like about this series. The Angels Take Manhattan is brilliant, The Time of the Doctor is a great send-off, and The Day of the Doctor (for a time) made Doctor Who an event again. That's all I can praise for this abysmal series.

I'm the same way about British slang! It gets a bit rude at times. Over the years I check myself if/when I say something that other people find offensive. But because most people around me don't know the origins of a lot of the British terms and phrases, nobody complains (or usually even notices) so it's as if I can cuss with impunity. With the exception of C-bombs, of course!
