9th Doctor: "I can travel in time." Rose: runs into the Tardis. 10th Doctor: "I can travel in time." Martha: "bullshit." This is what I like about Martha. She thinks like a scientist. She doesn't believe you can get teleported to the moon, until she's on the moon, and then wants to know how. She doesn't believe in time-travel until she sees it happen, then she wants to know how it works. Martha is the only modern companion to not only follow the Doctor's rules, she proactively asks him what they are. She's also the only one to finish her run and go home without getting sci-fi-ed into a freaky goddess/mutant. Coincidence?

This was my favourite era; just listen to the music! That angelic choir. I was a young teenager at the time, seeing prominent black characters in sci-fi was immeasurably important, even now it's a rarity. David Tennant and his fast-talking enthusiasm, how can someone be so perfect for a role!? There was something so "shabby" about this era; Rose, Martha and Donna were normal people with working to middle class British families but through travel they became heroes in their own right, diamonds in the rough. I'm so grateful to have witnessed the RTD era as it happened.
@Tamamo-no-Bae

How is it a rarity? It's quite common. Almost every sci-fi I've seen had a prominent black character. Uhura, Sisko, Teal'c, Tuvok, Broyles, Landro, etc.

Martha is basically us, trouble at home, needing an escape, you meet The Doctor he saves your life and offers you the whole universe, but you're worried that people might look for you, then he tells you his Spaceship can travel in Time, They can come back the second after they left and no one will know.

I liked Martha a lot. She was funny, kind, clever, intrepid, resourceful and strong. She was also good for the Doctor in getting him to confront and accept the pain of his past when she got him to talk about Gallifrey; good note since, as a medical student, she'd be aware that the best way to deal with pain and trauma is to talk about it and get it all out instead of bottling it up.

something magic happens when martha re-enters the tardis during the line “its like a box with that room just crammed in” the way that line starts outside the exterior prop and is carried on into her entering the full interior prop without stopping is some genius filmmaking that makes it feel like the tardis really is bigger on the inside. Something so small that someone thought of that doesnt involve cgi or anything big budget that they didnt already have. Love the early episodes for this reason.

I've always had a lot of respect for Martha. She put so much time and energy into the Doctor in the hope that eventually he would see her the way she wanted him to, and I think it took a lot of strength for her to finally admit how much it was taking out of her and decide to step away. A lot of the modern companions were separated from the Doctor for reasons not entirely within their control, but Martha made a conscious choice to prioritize her own mental health and self-respect. I consider that a pretty badass power move, personally.

Ten years.... it's amazing to see the interactions between Martha Jones' and Bill Potts' entrances in the TARDIS, this one is subtle in a way. Ten mouthed " it's bigger on the inside" just before she did, pretty hilarious. As far as Martha is concerned, she was a wonderful companion for Ten just as Bill was wonderful for Twelve. At least she didn't get converted to any horrific during Season 3, but all that aside, seeing this proves Martha Jones is one of my favorite companions of Nu Who. And Donna Noble.... and Bill Potts..... and Nardole. Great video 👍.

I would say Rose is the most loyal actually. “I made my choice a long time ago and I’m never gonna leave you.” “I’m gonna wait for the Doctor, just like he’d wait for me.” She literally jumped across an entire universe to find him again.

Gamelover254 You have a strong case for that. The only reason I chose clara for most loyal is because Rose had romantic feelings for the doctor. She was in love. Clara was not.
