As far as I'm concerned, the show ended with The Husbands of River Song. The 12th Doctor was sick & tired of losing companions, so in desperation he used Time Lord technology to pluck Clara out of time at the moment of her death, but things didn't go as he'd hoped, things couldn't go back to the way they were. Then shortly after that he runs into his wife again & realizes this is the last time he'll see her & he has to send her to her death to preserve the timeline, etc. After all this, it makes sense that the Doctor would retire from adventuring and live out his days in peace, perhaps as that museum curator from the 50th anniversary.

RTD has come along and just destroyed the show. There’s no going back now. The new Doctor isn’t actually the real Doctor because the real Doctor is playing happy families with Donna. Why would he do that? This is the doctor who has never settled down with any of his companions, so why Donna? None of it made any sense. If Tennant was shot with a laser, why wouldn’t he die? How did the new doctor knock up a new Tardis? This could have been written by a 5 year old. RTD has just erased 60 year history in one episode. I think from now on every doctor going forward will be black.

I've been thinking of why Russell T Davies turned on the "old fans" and has been acting so bizarre - when he created the Sarah Jane adventures it was a hit but wholly contained into a children's show and Liz Sladens untimely passing ended it. I think it's all about Torchwood it started out ok then began to fizzle out, he expected it to be a mega success and still up and running, the edgy darkside of his version of who. He tried to weave it into his run but it just didn't go as mainstream. It was his own IP built on DW but could be completely separate without needing the doctor to run. It must have hurt him personally, where the resentment began, to boot knowing how he pitched the 05 nuwho, Davies wasn't to concerned about the mythos and core ideas of classic who at all. It was the BBC who pushed to keep it in line with the classic. He left as show runner because of stress, no it was because he wasn't allowed to do as he wanted. Then after he did a kids show that got three seasons. Everything else has been a repeat of his initial success queer as folk, now mainstream audiences and I mean the majority of people in life are not of what Davies writes about. Now of course in 2023 it's all about the message and organisations like Disney doing everything for the ESG - message to get endless funding from certain organisations. I wouldn't be surprised if Davies was advising Chibnall every day until he got his foot back in the door and is now able to do what he wants.

@@edwardcatt2399 I RTD is a man with a huge ego but very one easy to bruise, his entire personality is first sexuality then politics second - everything else is more or less based on the two former. 40% of his writing is deus ex machina 40% identity/politics/sexuality & the remaining a mash of lifting others work then adding his own take and once in a while some of his own stand out work. I think all the niche awards over the years and we'll Ncuti Gatwa himself said he's living in a very leftist liberal bubble - he and RTD are super close. It's going to be interesting to see how over the top things get, then will come the now usual it's thr fans fault etc. Disney handed over just under 12m and DW budget re BBC is like just under two million a season, so a lot of stuff will be pumped out but I doubt the returns will be great, there's not going to be much of merchandise and that'll only be tailored for a minority.

Remember too that he took Torchwood to America when Moffat was running Doctor Who and ran a whole season arc that utterly ignored Doctor Who as if it just wasn't part of the same setting. Then the US audience ditched his show and the Sweet American network deal he wanted fizzled out. more rejection for Russel.

One day in the future, a man who was a fan back in 2005 will get control of Dr Who and will take revenge over RTD woke nonsense and reboot this Series back to the end of The Doctor Falls. As Chibnall/ RTD have already shown us, what has been done can be undone.

Thanks for this review, it echoed a lot of mine, and other people's feelings. The show has already degenerated so far from a science fiction adventure series with an avuncular lead who solved problems with his intelligence and was renowned for his bravery and compassion. I'm starting to regard the romantic aspects of the Doctor/ companion relationship of the revived series as a mixed blessing (I enjoyed it at the time). This additional dynamic to the Doctor's relationship was interesting as a one off (with Drs 9 -10 and Rose), but it became established as a permanent feature and now has paved the way for the depiction of the Dr 15 being walking cliche rather than a role model. The sad irony is that when the Doctor left all this unstated and unexplored everyone Gay or Straight could identify with the Doctor. Now that the new Doctor seems to be little more than a walking fantasy for the show runner who amongst the awkward, the overlooked or the not 'hip' would identify with this show?

I totally agree, it broke a fundamental foundation of the series and what made the Doctor, the Doctor; the companion is the audience stand-in, they can be the human with all that entails, and whilst the Doctor shouldn't be a totally distant God, he ultimately has to be a mysterious alien, with an understated power . . . Unfortunately, the new series decided to make him BOTH ever more God-like and human at the same time, and broke the character

@@stuartbrown8309 I'm normally not on the modern trend of finding 5+ year age gaps creepy but the Doctor was literally thousands of years old and had been to thousands of planets. This bigeneration shit is a blessing in disguise. RTD put the real DW on hiatus. He’ll be out there for a decade from now when a normal crew gets to showrun, they’ll get to pull out the real DW, say flux was the toy maker and off we go! Actual DW is just on hiatus and for a few years the 6 progressive teens out there get a bargain bin DW for a year or two. RTD smartly gave us a gift, as even he made it clear that that’s not the real doctor that walked away, and the real doctor is right there for when the day comes, if it does. But how he set it up at least gives hope for a moment of clarity one day.

With hindsight, Season 1 2005's strengths were "The Unquiet Dead" (Gatiss), "Dalek" (Robert Shearman), "Father's Day" (Paul Cornell) and "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" (Moffat). RTD's material was "meh" and had the worst clangers. Even the Dalek two-part finale was spoiled by the crap "satire" on a TV quiz show of the day. Much of NuWHO has been boring, preachy or cringe, all of which amount to "dead air", as a concert engineer would say.

The fans of the new "doctor" are now saying "it was the third most watched programme on xmas day and the most second most watched scripted programme" . Well lets put this on perspective 1. A new doctor has always seen a bounce in the ratings Whittaker had 10 million but soon dropped to just under 5 million . 2. It was xmas day a captive audience those that weren't drunk or having a party probably switched on as there was nothing else to watch . 3. There were only a handful of scripted shows on tv it was mainly dancing on ice etc . Eastenders was on so late that people were probably so exhausted they fell asleep 4. Big story lines always imcrease the viewing figures look back at Dallas when JR was shot the ratings quadrupled , eastenders when Den handed Angie dicorce papers on xmas day highest ratings ever for a soap opera. Remember one swallow doesn't make a summer

Fantastic episode, right from the start, the creepy doll face, throught to the quirkiness and iver the top Toy Maker. Particularly liked the gold tooth. The bi-generation was actually new and fresh, and the idea of the weight and burden upon the Doctor only using the 'drive' as a mechanism of avoidness makes perfect sense. Using the 15th Doctor then to be free, full of excitement and energy moving forward. If anything the clip of the Christmas episode is where I fear the show will then really change direction into more fantasy than science fiction. Over all the ratings have been low in comparison to the original reboot of the show and in deed the original classic. That said the landscape of TV has changed, and to be fair the ratings in comparison to other shows is very good, and the fact it has audiences globally. The show us not going anywhere, so jump on board and enjoy it for what it is, or simply don't watch it.
