Hi there Leo! I am a student pursuing my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I wanted to know if after completion of my graduate program, I can do my PsyD in clinical psychology and since I do not have my masters in the same, how challenging would/could it be to be shifting more towards the neurological realm. I would also like to understand if there is any particular concentration I should be taking if I plan on doing my PsyD in CP. Thanks in advance for the response. Appreciate the help

Hi 👋🏽 yes you should be good. Most PsyD program require a masters in a closely related degree. Clinical mental health counseling should fit that requirement. As for concentrations, that honestly depends on the places you apply to. I’d recommend looking at the PsyD programs brochure to get a since if what kind of candidate their looking for, contact a current graduate student in the program, and give the training director a call or email to ask questions.

@leoscaletta5098

Usually doctoral programs require a masters degree in psychology or a closely related discipline of at least 45 semester hours from a regionally accredited institution. So, clinical psychology or counseling would be fine. Just depends on which one would fit the program more. My PsyD program favors counseling psychology. If you’re asking if you can provide counseling services after your masters in clinical psychology, then yes, as long as the program is accredited and prepares you to sit for a licensure exam (e.g lpc, LMFT, lcsw, etc)

Hello, I currently go to school in Texas and will be doing my post graduate studies soon here as well. I’m not interested in research but more of a clinical practice, which leaves me with 2 choices: MA in Clinical Psychology or a PsyD in clinical psychology. I know that here in the state of Texas if you pursue a MA in Clinical Psychology you qualify for an LPA license. I also know that if you meet certain criteria you’re able to practice independently as an LPA. My question is, if this is the case what’s the difference between a PsyD and a masters degree? Wouldn’t they fall under the same thing? I’m so confused lol. I hope you could help and thank you for the video!
@leoscaletta5098

Hi 👋 sorry I’m getting back to this so late. You might have gotten the answer you are looking for but I’ll still chime in lol. So first off, you don’t need to go through a clinical program to be an LPC, LMFT, LCSW, etc. you can also go through a counseling program and also be a LPC, LMFT, LCSW, etc. I feel like the main thing people talk about is clinical programs but you can achieve the same goal with a counseling program. As long as they both are accredited. A PsyD is a doctorate degree. The main goal is to be a psychologist vs a therapist/counselor. So you’ll sit for a different licensure exam. When you graduate with a PsyD and pass the EPPP you’ll be a licensed psychologist (LP). When you graduate with a master you’ll take an exam for your specific license you want and were prepared for and would be called whatever licensure exam you’ll sit for. Hope this helps :)

Somthing to consider is what license is more recognized by the public in your area. Here in Texas, LPCs, LMFTs LCSWs , and LP are the standard. I’ve never heard of a licensed mental health counselor before, and most agencies won’t say in their job description they are looking for an LMHC here in Texas. TBH it’s almost always LPC or LMFT. With that being said. It’s also what you want to focus on and your job duties. LCSWs primary focus and training are case management and looking at the system; with a secondary focus on psychotherapy and counseling theories . Whereas the others put more emphasis on counseling theory. It comes down to how you see your role and helping

In the US you can’t call yourself a psychologist unless you have completely your doctorate and have taken the EPPP. With a masters degree, you would use the title of the license you could sit for depending on your master (e.g LPC, LMFT, LCSW, etc). But there are places like in Mexico where you can call yourself a psychologist with just a masters.

Not sure if this answers your question, but you look at a lot of clinical case studies for different things and classes. You don’t have to “staff a case” to get into the program if that’s what you mean, but during the program you will look at a lot of cases and be asked to come up with treatment plans, a diagnosis and differential diagnosis, do program evals, supervision, etc. you also sometimes look at clinical case examples at your practicum sites sometimes.

Im from MA, if you wanted to be a therapist youd have to get a masters in counseling or a masters in social work. (LMHC - licensed mental health counselor, LSW - licensed social worker, or LMFT - licensed marriage and family therapist) all of these are three separate schoolings and different degrees. At the end of completing your masters in either one of these fields, you then have to do an apprenticeship for 1-2 years in order to later become licensed. Otherwise if you wanted to stick to masters in strictly psych, you would have to wait until your PHD or Psyd in order to become licensed and able to be an actual therapist. Masters in psych does not lead to becoming a therapist. Id speak to an advisor at your school to help you further.

Thank you very much for this video, I had a question while watching this video, is the supervision course included in the university program or not? Does that mean you don't pay extra money to the supervisor? Because in my country, the supervision course is not part of the university program and we have to pay extra money and get a supervisor after finishing our studies, which means that in my country, apart from the university tuition, we have to pay for the supervisor as well. I wanted to know Is your country the same?

It’s included in our course work. Unlike electives that you must pay for on the side, the supervision course is mandatory to also be accredited by the APA here in our country. So no, we don’t pay any extra money. I hope that answers your question 😅😊

What of dream interpretation?
@leoscaletta5098
Ай бұрын
Dream interpretation can be a topic of discussion within a therapeutic conversation depending on the goals of the client. How you navigate the conversation will greatly depend on your theoretical approach. Typically, psychoanalysis and Jungian therapist do more dream analysis. Or I should say, being it into therapy without the client asking. I personally believe if the client would find it helpful to talk about dreams then we can explore them rather then Me making them talk about them.

Hi Leo, I am a Texas resident and trying to apply for my Masters program in Counselling psychology. I am however a little confused about what is it the difference between pursuing clinical psychology and counselling psychology in terms of the course and in practice. I have been watching a lot of stuff online to see what differences lie and similarities b/w the two but I still stand confused as to if we 'diagnose' in the counselling program and assess or that is just in clinical psychology. Also, does clinical psychology program have an edge over counselling psychology in practice or in essence, it is the same. I am not able to find a lot of schools that offer the clinical psychology program in texas-some suggestions would really help. Thank ypu :)
@ohsnaptacular
Жыл бұрын
Not from Texas so take this with a grain of salt. In general, clinical psychology will focus on the pathology of mental health. You would focus more on people’s DSM diagnoses and people with SMI (Serious Mental Illness). As well it will be more psychology focused (which is different from a counseling focus). Counseling is more interested in providing the treatment. Counseling has its roots in post WW1 and WW2 helping combat veterans adapt back to society, whereas psychology is rooted in philosophy in its origin and then became entangled with the medical community. Counseling, in its origin, has a more biopsychosocial holistic model of viewing the world and psych would have a more medical model. However, a lot has changed since the 2000’s. These programs have become more and more similar as research has continued to show that counseling theories are secondary to the counselor themselves and, most importantly, their clients. Now many programs will give a broad view to best prepare clinicians. There will be elements of social work, psychology, counseling, and systems therapy. ALSO! Be very careful, the most important information you need to find is whether or not the program is accredited to provide you adequate educational requirements for licensure.
@leoscaletta5098
Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response. But yes! @ohsnaptacular gave a great description and history. What that means for your training and program will be reflected in your course work. Clinical programs might make you take more classes or practicum sites that focus on psychological testing. “Clinical” psychologists usually find themselves at VAs or hospital setting due to the amount of testing and assessment. Whereas “counseling” psychologists might find themselves at University counseling centers or community counseling centers due to more of an emphasis on counseling/therapy. But as the previous comment stated, they both learn the basics of each and if the program is accredited then you should leave feeling confident to do both.
