Paika is an indigenous martial art that originated in the ancient tribal republic of Kalinga. The martial art was prevalent during the medieval era in the tribal kingdoms of Gondwana, Kondistan, Odra Desa, Chota Nagpur, etc. The Paika martial system is unlike the usual Indian Hindu martial tradition of being caste based. The Paika included people from all tribes and castes, a militia drawn from the people to defend the land. The Paika are known for their double edged straight sword, i.e. the Khanda. The Paika fighters also hold immense cultural significance and their presence is a must for all tribal festivities and ceremonies. During the colonial period the Paika fighters faced off the British in a major clash that is now known as one of the earliest wars for freedom. This video is from our very first documentary made in 2005 and it features the tribal Paika artistes of Nabarangpur town.
