I’m glad you mentioned the 2.4 liter turbo made in Mexico. My dad bought a new Cirrus with that engine back in 97, which was later passed on to me a few years later. That car was a blast to drive. If you pressed the accelerator to the floor at a standstill it did have a ton of turbo lag to the point that you thought something was wrong with the car until finally and very suddenly it would fly off. Thinking about that car brings back very fond memories, thanks for the video!

We had it repaired and was not given a warranty because it was going to happen again which it did 3 weeks later. We had it towed to a ford dealer and traded it in on an 08 Fusion. My mom had one a 2000 SE with the 2.4 it was a salvage title car (it had minor flood damage but it was freshwater and it only got a little over the door line which got the carpet wet, the seller replaced the carpet and all 4 wheel bearings there was zero signs that it had said flood damage the whole underside of the car was clean and corrosion free til it was sold in 2008). shortly after she bought it our grandmother moved in with us for a while and she had trouble getting in the car (it was pretty low to the ground lol). so I bought it off her and she got a bigger car (an 01 Impala which grandma loved). I LOVED this car that little 2.4 had more than enough OOMPH get me where I had to go, never hesitated, it went up hills with ease my last car (94 Thunderbird with a 3.8 V6 with 140hp) struggled to get up a hill unless I had a running start. car was great on gas, had ICE COLD AC to date the best AC I ever had in any car past or present. Took the car to Florida from NY 4 times never gave me any issue. the only things mechanically I EVER had was the right rear brake hose that connected to the rear drum brake clogged and caused the brake to not release when the pedal was released (had to replace it, the drum and the pads) and a water pump (did not circulate properly causing slight overheat), other than that ZERO issues. And yes the battery in the fender is retarded, I had a minor fender bender in 06 and the battery was damaged they put a new one in but did not tighten the terminal bolts, I tell you jacking up that car in January to get that wheel off and fender liner (thankfully just part of it not the WHOLE liner) to tighten those bolts are NOT fun. when I was looking for a new car 2 years ago to replace one that was totaled I was actually looking into a 3rd gen cars but could not find one that was in my price range, so I got a low mileage '09 Impala.

My wife had a 2004 Stratus R/T sedan when we first met, and I ended up putting many miles on it myself. I found it to be a good looking car, but it seemed to always have problems as it aged. I recall that oil consumption was terrible once it got over 100K, however the 2.7L still managed to rack up about 250K after she passed the car to her brother. He maintains it still ran okay, but ended up scrapping it once it had too many issues and was mechanically totaled. I also remember attempting to replace the headlight bulbs, only to have to pay the dealer to do it because of the headlamp design - I believe they had to remove the bumper just to access the headlights! Lastly, the upgraded R/T wheels ended up warping over time and made this car a death trap in the winter. Even with decent tires, the rear end would fishtail on every icy patch because of how warped those wheels became. A/C stopped working just before 100K as well. Great video!

Back in the early 2000s when I was in the market to buy a car to replace my totaled out 1994 Ford Escort my mom gave me, I looked at the Stratus because I thought it looked cool, but they were priced more than I could afford for a used one. I went with a 1997 Ford Escort instead, and it did well until the head gasket blew at 107k miles... Either way, as stated in the video, the engine reliability was a problem at the time--- I recall seeing almost every Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth burning something- with white stinky smoke coming out of the exhaust.

My 1990 Escort caught on fire! I almost bought a 96 Stratus ES V6 but my grandpa wouldn't co-sign. He changed his mind a couple days later but the Stratus was gone, so I got a 2000 Escort ZX2. I loved that car. I got rid of it in 2007 because the a/c compressor died.

I had the European Chrysler Stratus convertible as well as the second generation Chrysler Sebring convertible with the 2.7 engine. Personally I had no issues with the engine and I quite liked it since it had decent power while returning over 21mpg. I sold the car with a little over 110k miles and I was told that the engine died a few months after that, fulfilling its destiny. I still miss the car though since nobody makes affordable large comfy convertibles anymore.

@@markmarku8169 Both the first and second generation Sebring/Stratus convertible had excellent room for 4 large adults. Especially in the back seats are extremely comfy for a convertible. The second gen Sebring convertible has a lot of common components with the first gen - if I recall correctly including the rear seats. The only drawback in my perspective were the missing headrests for the rear passengers - I always found that rather dangerous.

Owned a 98 4 door, which while a good looking car, best of the bunch IMHO, was mechanically garbage. The 2.4L threw a rod out of the side of the block at 81K miles, I had never seen that in a modern engine, mostly in 60's straight sixes. Replaced the engine and sent it on its merry way to be someone else's problem. Much harder to replace the engine than the longitudinal LH platform cars. Same with the transmission, changed one in the 2.5L Sebring I owned, what a PItA, comparatively doing the LH transmission was infinitely easier.

Thanks for the video. I'm the original owner of a 2002 Stratus R/T with currently 306K+ miles. The original engine was destroyed by my mechanic around the 60K mile mark and replaced with another engine that had roughly 40K miles (yes, for free). The transmission was refurbished around the 240K mark and at the 265K mark, the 2nd engine had one cylinder fail (2015). So, I had a choice, spend the money on someone's problems or replace the engine? There was nothing wrong with my Status with a few exceptions cosmetically with the interior door panel. (Horribly designed door panels) I took my cash and dropped a Jasper Motor in and it's been flawless. I truly think I could get to 450K miles if maintained. The comment in the video is critical about maintenance. Yes, I changed the oil every 3K miles. The great thing about this car today is that I can find almost any part for it at the local junkyard. My buddy wants to buy it from me for his daughter about to turn 16. I'm letting him know, I'll buy it back if she doesn't destroy it and changes the oil every 3K miles. I think this car gets a bad rap saying the engines are a disaster. You get what you give. Change the oil ofter and follow the schedule of maintenance schedule in the owner's manual and it will be fine. Thanks again for the video.

I was always disappointed about the cross-naming between sedan and coupe, to the detriment of the reputation of the coupe. I had a 2005 Stratus RT Coupe, and loved the car. The only problem I ever had in the 6 years I owned it was the curling dash, but that happened while still under warranty and was repaired cost-free to me. I enjoyed the handling, performance was decent with the 3.0L 200hp V6, and it was a great looking car. We liked it so well my wife bought one just like it, down to the color. The only difference was mine had factory sunroof and she added an aftermarket one. Mine never leaked, hers leaked from almost the beginning. My RT is actually on my list of one of the favorite cars I've owned.

You hit this entire video spot on! I had a 2004 SXT with the 2.4 SOHC as the first car I've ever bought brand new and did a lot of highway driving with it immediately the day after I bought it. (I'm from New Orleans, and that was my "Hurricane Katrina" car, so I did a lot of in and out highway driving as well.) The power of that liter engine was adequate enough for me, even being sort of "heavy-footed". The only major issues I had with it is I had to get the transmission rebuilt after about 100,000 miles, and it overheated on the highway at 200,000 miles, blowing the head gasket. Otherwise, it was a good car for me. I even popped the timing belt twice with it, but that engine was non-interference, so after a new belt it was good as new.

Im from Barcelona, Spain, and my aunty had a white 2.4 1998 Chrysler Stratus. It was reliable until it started burning and leaking oil in 2011. Most non car people told my aunty "nice Mercedes" "nice Jaguar"... few people knew what it was. Her Chrysler had the same exterior as the Dodge with the same grill and all but with Chrysler emblems. It was a cool car.

I had a '96 Stratus Sedan with the 2.4. Passengers complimented its smooth, quiet ride, and I loved the way it handled in the snow and ice. I bought a 2006 stratus sxt 2.4 for 650 a couple years ago. It was in a wreck both back doors were smashed in and the windows were busted out. It had an oil leak and also the drive train was bent when it got hit. It started up everytime and was well worth the 650. The only issue i had with it was that it burned a lot of gas. Im thinking it was because of the oil leak.

We have a 06 Dodge Stratus SXT Sedan with the 2.4L DOHC with 133k miles on it. Purchased it new and haven't had any issues with it.
