milkmanv1 No kidding! That's how baseball works! If you show up an umpire in a way where fans can see, they'll retaliate. The worst is to actually draw a line with the bat. I'm not sure where to find the video, but there's a good one of a minor-leaguer who thought the pitch was outside, so he drew a line in the other batter's box to show the umpire. Now, everyone has seen that. So, you hear the umpire tell him that, sure, he'll call them all there for strikes. You then see the catcher actually set up way outside and the strike was called. It's the way it works. You can say things to umpires, but you don't make a spectacle of them, because they'll get you back. In this case, Mondesi was pretty demonstrative with his body language and it's what set up every other pitch.
@CBrandonChapman

***** Easy to say that. But, any of us, in any of our jobs, look for ways we can get even when someone purposely tries to show us up and make us out to be a fool when we make a mistake. The UMPS WERE WRONG to do this. But, Mondesi knew better, too!
@canadaandusarock730

milkmanv1 In all of sports, there are no officials that do their job worse than MLB umpires.....behind the plate. These same umpires are often the best officials of any sport.....on the bases. They have an uncanny ability to get the call right.....on the bases. Yes they make mistakes there too. But they almost always make the right call. So it's mind blowing how truly horrible they are with balls & strikes. What's worse is that a "major league strike zone" changes literally from day to day. There's no regard at all for the rule book. Imagine if an NCAA or NBA referee decided "his 3 point line"? Or an NFL referee said "my judgement" on field goals is not as liberal as the referees over in the AFC? Yes, the 'floating' MLB strike zone situation IS that bad.

What's funny here is a few years prior to this, I attended one of the two major league umpire's school down in Florida where some students are chosen to go into umpiring as a profession, starting off in the minors. As part of the training the instructors, some who of course are major league umpires, create scenario to teach you how to handle various situations. This was one of them - to teach how to handle a player or a manager that has been ejected and refuses to leave the field. When I was up, the instructor (who was one of the umpires in this LA-St. Louis game) really went to the extreme after my having to eject him (and I do not have a short fuse at all). He went way farther than in the previous teaching scenarios that day, which was understandable since they wanted us to learn how to handle such situations. Well, it got to the point where I felt I was left with no choice but to call a forfeit after his refusal to leave and I got no assistance from other players or coaches. I wasn't emotional about it, it was what I believed to be the proper course of action considering the situation and his behavior. Well, I got punished for it. The MLB umpire/instructor told me "you never want to let it get to that point because you never, ever call a forfeit because some manager is being that obstinate." It was more a "chew out" than giving me advice. In fact, I was later told I came close to being chosen as one of the students to be picked for a job in the minors, but that situation likely cost me. Needless to say, I was upset over hearing that considering the scenario created for the lesson was an extreme one (not ordinary at all) and the instructors used to tell us repeatedly that we were to be graded only on the basics of rules, mechanics and judgement. Well, well....look at what happened here! For many years I wanted to contacted that same umpire and remind him of that day at umpire school, and ask him if he felt like he handled the situation properly. At least I didn't get all worked up or emotional about calling a forfeit. The major league umpire(s) here are "very" emotional and let it get the better of their judgement. Can't help but wonder how I would have been graded by him had I attended the school just after this incident. I will admit after this game I felt better about my decision that day.

I attended this game, and I did not receive a ball because they ran out. These highlights do not do justice how angry the crowd was at the home plate umpire's calls. My friend remarked it was the angriest baseball game he had seen. I specifically remember Mondesi's strike 2 pitch being way outside and still being called a strike. I was in the upper reserved and could see that it was outside, and the crowd was very upset with the call. Then he struck out and got thrown out and the game ended, and the Cards promptly ran off the field. My friends and I were dumbfounded. We paid to see 9 innings and didn't even get a baseball to bring home or to throw on the field like many others. I remember seeing many people still holding their baseballs in the parking lot after the game like they were happy to get one and keep it. The Cards were terrible that year, and Nomo was great, but gave up a solo home run I believe to a nobody in the 1st inning.

Bullshit. They were trying to keep the game in the hands of the players, but the "fans" were the one that caused the eventual decision of the forfeit. Contrary to popular belief, those of us who are put in a position to supervise a sport or game, we do it because WE want to see it to it's logical and proper conclusion. As an official in a sporting event on national TV I had a heart attack right in the middle of the event, yet no one there, or watching on TV never knew it happened because I made sure to do what I could to not be a distraction. I managed to get out of sight without making a scene. The day I almost died was a day I did my job right to the last moment. I let the event unfold without being a distraction or causing an interruption. It pisses me off to have people think we are only there to be on TV, and act like big shots. The 3-0 pitch was pretty much a perfect strike right down the middle. But the 3-1 pitch was that wide Mondesi would have needed frequent flyer miles to reach it. The ump called it a strike just to spite Mondesi who thought that he should have been headed to 1st base. To put it bluntly the ump for all intents and purposes cheated. He looked like he was going to call it a strike regardless where it was pitched unless there was no choice like it went in the dirt or way over everyone's head.

Back in 1995 and still today, Bob Davidson the worst umpire ever. The Dodgers' fans just did what other fans have wanted to do when he umpires.
@camicawber

Bob Davidson the worst? Think of all the fans who were there that night to watch the umpires. I'm sure that a lot of people were at the park that night because Davidson was umpiring, and he gave them their money's worth. ...On a serious note, this kind of thing bugs me almost more than really bad calls. Mondesi walks down to first on the 3-0 pitch, which was a strike. Maybe the ump doesn't like it, but grow up. You don't call the next pitch a strike when it's clearly a ball just to get back at him. Be professional. And also remember that you're there to officiate - you're not supposed to be part of the story.

4 ROY in a row actually (Karros 1992, Piazza 1993, Mondesi 1994 and Nomo 1995). At one point (dunno if still the case), the Dodgers had more ROY then any other team in baseball (kinda fitting, as they had the very first ROY, Jackie Robinson in 1947) (just checked the list, they also had 4 in a row 1979-1982 (Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Howe, Fernando Valenzuela, Steve Sax)

I remember this game. I live in St. Louis and watched the game on KPLR. What happened is that that fans started throwing balls on the field the umps stopped the game and called the players off the field. The balls were picked up and a warning was issued to the fans, but when they tried to resume play fans resumed throwing balls and other objects on to the field and that's when the Dodgers had to forfeit.

I know umpires are human, but they should be held to a higher standard when calling pitches. They need to check their attitudes at the door when they arrive at the ballpark. My guess is that the umpire felt like he got "showed" up by Mondosi on the 3-0 count pitch. The next two pitches were clearly balls, but the ump had to make a statement and call them strikes. No one comes to the game to see an umpire. They should call the game and be invisible. Too many umps instigate issues. Make the call and walk away!
