Hi. Cows are alright. Mostly they are just curious, especially the young ones. I had a group of them following me across a field. I turned to face them, waved my arms, and shouted. That stopped them dead. The thing is don't run away or they will run after you. Assess each situation as you come to it. If things look too dodgy be prepared to take another route. Happy hiking and happy camping. ilona

yeh ive a bit of a thing about them after getting chased by a pack of 20 young ones whilst carrying my son in a backpack, was a bit of a mad dash over a fence to get away so these days a bit wary of them

Epic as usual! Looking forward to next installment. You should have a slot on Countryfile encouraging people to get out and explore. Cows are mainly harmless, the only time you have to be carefull is when they have young calves and can be a bit protective. Cheers!

Have been stealth camping in a car for years. I thought it was only 20 years, but it’s actually nearly 40. I cook in an improvised alcove made out of plywood and cardboard box (to shield from the wind and prevent splashing from the pan) whilst standing under the rear door of my Mondeo. All you need is a lightweight frying pan (so everything cooks quicker and uses less gas) and a fork. The more stuff you have, the more messing about and cleaning. Prep surface is the top of the cooler box. No bed, just roll the driver’s seat back, pillow and opened out sleeping bag. Simple. One of the most fun cars was my trusty old Saab 99 in bright orange. The Volvo 264 had the most comfortable seats by far. Very wide. One bleak winter I drove from the midlands to mid western Norway. The last section from Lillehammer took two and a half days due to the depth of the snow and freezing temperatures. -21! The engine’s cylinder base gasket had been damaged by an idiot I trusted to work on it. So I had to remove the radiator filler cap and operate an open cooling system with an improvised top-up system to keep it topped up. I made it from an Austin 1300 washer bottle. Every hour or so I switched on the washer motor to pump water into the open radiator. The -21 temperatures meant I had to keep the engine running all the time. When I parked up, the snow was falling so thick and fast that the car got covered completely in only a few minutes! Best adventures of my life. Do I wish I’d videoed it all? No chance. The details may get a bit hazy over time, but memories are more real because they exist as an experienced thing, as opposed to an observed/recorded event - like a BBC travelogue by Michael Palin! One of the reasons that journey was so difficult was because I only had normal road tyres on the car. It’s illegal to drive on Norwegian roads after October without winter tyres or chains. I had no chains, but I had winter tyres waiting for me at my destination. So, I improvised, and mostly drove everywhere at 5-15 mph!
