1:52 now why is it licking the pooper? Clean it or some other reason?
@allen-og8rs

Zoologists say that mothers lick the pooper to stimulate baby defecation, because small animals are likely to be constipated.
@WildernessWorld

Thanks for asking. In this particular situation, when a mother doe nurses her fawn, she licks her fawn's butt to stimulate a bowel movement and urination. As you mentioned, they also lick them clean to remove any scent.

Did she hide her fawn this way? wow.
@johnlarson1249

In the first several months of a deer's life, the mother actually resorts to "hiding" her fawn on many occasions. Believe it or not, it's actually the best weapon that a fawn and her mother have with regard to the fawn's safety. Because of the high-risk of predation, does and fawns that employ a successful "hiding strategy," and who can do so quickly, give a fawn the best chance at long-term survival. Because does are essentially 'single' mothers, it is inevitable that even the most-caring, most-protective of the bunch will, from time-to-time, have to leave the fawn on its own. Does will look for tall grasses, if available, and then through a series of grunts and calls, will instruct her fawn to "hide." This strategy then allows the mother to engage in necessary activities, such as grazing, which deer spend several hours per day doing, or migrating to a new area as deer respond to the seasonal changes. Lastly, I'll leave you with a couple of interesting facts regarding this whole "hiding" strategy. 1) When I first heard of such a strategy, I thought it sounded a bit overplayed as a means of securing the fawn. After all, many of the animals that would prey on fawns have excellent hearing, but BEYOND excellent ability to sniff out just about anything. So, how/why could this strategy work? As it turns out, there are two (2) factors that answer the previous points on a direct basis. A) Fawns do not need to be taught on how to remain silent while they are hidden. When a fawn is instructed by her mother to hide in tall grasses, her instinctual behaviors kick in, of which one of those behaviors is an innate ability for a fawn to remain almost perfectly still, in spite of possibly being surrounded by immediate danger. A lioness could walk right next to a fawn in those tall grasses, but the fawn will not 'blow her cover' due to any perceived fear of being found. B) This next point is the one that seemed very short-sighted to me. A predator's ability to pick up the scent of whatever it is they are looking for, even though they may be a few thousand feet apart, is for many hunting animals, their best weapon. I remember thinking, just how is it exactly, that a fawn will not "blow their cover," and then run for dear life, if a lioness...a bear...or a wolf, should somehow find their way to just a few feet away from the hiding place, with the only remaining fact still keeping the fawn from certain death is only that the predator has yet to visually spot the fawn. Well, here is the answer, and frankly, it shocked me. Fawns...at least in the first year of life...1) Do NOT give off any actual scent markers that can be used by another entity in identifying them as a deer (fawn, at this stage), and 2) With no actual scent markers excreted by a fawn, then no entity, at least through their olfactory sense, can track this animal, at all. This means that, as long as the doe/fawn are vigilant in communicating possible dangers to each other, then a doe can pick almost any spot that simply has an ability to hide the fawn from sight. This "hiding place" has proven so effective at times, that I have watched video of both bears and wolves walk by, perhaps as close as 5' or 6' to the hiding spot, and continue on walking by as if nothing were there. With a bear's sense of smell, this makes the fawn's "no scent markets" an extremely powerful tool. Now, I'll share one last example, but this one ends with a different outcome. A doe had instructed her fawn to hide in fairly tall grasses as a mother bear and her three cubs were spotted in the grazing area of the deer. These grasses were not particularly high, but they were effectively high enough to do the job. The doe instructs her fawn, who quickly follows direction. As a few minutes went by, the bear continued walking through the field, harassing various deer and elk along the way. It just so happens, that as the bear and her cubs decided to finally leave the area, they would randomly walk through what looked like a bit of a worn path in the area of the tall grasses. As I said earlier, through nothing more than sheet coincidence, the mother bear turned a corner, or an area that she had made her corner, and it was close enough to eventually expose the fawn. This all happened so quickly that the mother bear actually became quite startled, and angry. Her closest cub became so terrified of her mother's growl at that exact point that she ended up climbing the closest tree and remaining for quite a while. The bear, seeing her newfound opportunity for protein, immediately took the fawn, and began eating her while still alive.
