The ESC in a radio control models power system is ultimately responsible for delivering the power from the battery to the motor. It accomplishes this when the correct signal is received from the on board receiver.
The ESC would send a pulse to the motor which would consist of a voltage at a specific frequency. The voltage sent to the motor comes from the main battery pack.
Here is where things get interesting. The current draw from the battery pack is directly related to the load that is applied. THe applied load occurs at the motor. When the motor is loaded you would expect current to increase. THis is true as the load is increased, the current draw increases. The motor does indeed pull power from the battery pack. Power is equivalent to the wattage that the motor is consuming. As we load the motor further there will be an increase in current draw and therefore an increase of power consumed.
Knowing that the motor is responsible for consuming power in an electric RC model allows us to better select a reliable power system.
Keep these concepts in mind when selecting your next power system.
