I have changed the way I fish a drop shot and it has generated more bites than I expected. I give the rod more shaking action. I feel the bottom and I just start working the rod with quick little pops up and down. When I watch videos on fishing the drop shot, it is always said to fish it slow, drag it, or barely move the rod. Fish it like the hover juggle and give that rod the business!

I experimented with a micro-sized drop shot with a tiny micro tube on it... big fat bluegills would follow it in and crush it at my feet in 6 inches of water. Haven't really tried a full sized drop shot yet, but it may be just the thing for the hotter summer months in my local ponds.

It's not likely this content creator will ever read this but for those who stumble onto my comment, I tried fishing the drop shot for the first time several years ago. I didn't catch a darn thing for the longest time. I'd get bite once in a while, but I never brought any fish in. Out of desperation I decided to try fishing a drop shot using a finesse bass jig in the place of the traditional drop shot sinker. Being a bank fisherman, I never really knew what part or level of the water the bass were holding in so, I concluded that by using a drop shot with my finesse bass jig dragging the bottom of my fishing waters, it gave me a lure in two different levels the water I was fishing in. More than once, I've caught a bass on the finesse jig weight and as I reeled that fish in, I'd get a second fish bite the drop shot. I've also gotten fish on drop shot with a second fish hitting jig as I reeled in. In Arizona it's legal to fish with two separate hooks on the same line so it's works out good for me; I mean, better than fishing the drop shot alone with a conventional drop shot sinker.

Most ponds built in the last 15+ years have a shallow water “ledge” and then a “drop off”. I have heard some call it a “Baby Killer” as a child can “wade out” a little and it will only be up to 3’ deep but then the drop off occurs. The wall of the drop off is usually clay or some slippery surface and it is near impossible to “climb up” the drop off. Alpha Bass patrol this drop off. If the little bass are biting, the Alpha is in Neutral or Negative mode. If Alpha switches into Positive mode (I have yet to see a sign signaling the change), smaller bass will inspect the baits but have to wait for the Alphas to “pass” on the bait. I have witnessed this 10’s of times. On one Pond I know and fish my friend who built the pond has trained an Alpha smallmouth bass to take a piece of a hotdog out of his fingers and I have video to prove it! Here is a fun fact: Often you will see bass chasing along a just hooked bass. Common theory is that those bass want that bait. Truth is bass eat bass and are always trying to identify a weak fish. We will attract a bunch of smallmouth bass and bluegill in at Feeding Time and throw hotdog pieces and whole hotdogs out. In the Spring fed, crystal clear water, we will see the bluegill eat the hotdog pieces, small bass will strike the bluegill and Alpha Bass will literally eat a whole smallmouth bass! I have trimmed a fin on a bluegill and returned it to the water. The other bluegill will begin to “bump” the bluegill and eventually remove its back fin so it can not maneuver and the other bluegill will eventually eat it. Not cool so we try to teach careful handling of All fish. Bass are always “testing” other bass by swimming alongside and literally bumping them! Marine Life is soooo facilitating. Be well.

Few things: 1. The CUT R Worm does not get enough love for ponds! It’s my go to! Black and blue, watermelon red or the pearl/green with a 1/8-1/4 bullet weight. I fish it near ledges/drops, open water near the middle, and even started pegging it and bounding it up from the bottom. And the RAGE TOAD! 2. Do you feel something like Bait Fuel helps with lost fish? I primarily fish kayak tournaments. I need 100% of my catches in the boat. I don’t lose fish often. Not even 1 a month. But I feel that a person right behind me was using it and would clean up my spots right after I fished. Do you think this is an attractant/presentation issue? Or simply a timing/right place right time issue. 3. Sometimes we need a break from catching regular bass and something to break up the monotony. I challenge you to go after some shoal bass in Al or MI. Go for some peacock in FL. It was a great change of pace for me and I feel like I learned more about largies doing those fishing trips than I did before that. Just behaviors and ways the feed. (I know peacocks aren’t actually the same family as bass. I get it.) 4. Thank you for doing this series. As much as I appreciate the kayak uncuts I really wish when I started fishing people were beating the banks with me. I feel like I was one step infront of some bigger KZitemrs but I’ve stayed at the kayak where a lot have moved past straight into boats. So I appreciate it when someone is able to take a step back and appeal to more demographics.

Man, personally I’d like to, but other styles of content just doesn’t get the views, so monetarily I can’t justify it. This is my full time job, so I gotta make decisions to provide for my family. 4.
