Christopher Hitchens vs. William Dembski
Title: Does A Good God Exist?
Date: November 18th, 2010
Place: Prestonwood Baptist Church, Plano, Texas
Audience: Students of Prestonwood Christian Academy
Full Debate: • Christopher Hitchens V...
Content:
- Theistic recruiting of scientific discoveries as evidence for the ingeniousness of god.;
- "Please always beware of an argument that appears to explain everything. It's very likely to explain nothing.";
- Evidence for god: "Where's the need for faith in that case?" "There'd be no need for faith if there really was evidence";
- Strictly time-wasting question: "If there's a god and if he's good - where is all this evil from?"; "War and pestilence come because we are not very highly evolved animals who live on a rather climatically unstable planet, and don't know very much yet about our circumstances". ;
- The bonding of the human species, responsibility to one another, altruism;
- "Morality cannot be dictated to us."
- The Ten Commandments don't mention slavery, genocide, child-abuse, etc., yet have 4 instructions on how to worship a very jealous, capricious and ill-tempered god.
- You can be an atheist whilst being anything else you like (secular humanist, sadist, fascist, communist). There are many choices as you like - all we say is that there is no supernatural dimension and that we're alone in this struggle, as other species are.
