This channel is really not about "you" and what "you" want... Its about hunting. I never mention politics, but hell it is a free country (for now), and I care deeply about the direction its going. Wearing my favorite shirts while Im in a video is not a political statement of any kind, its just who I am. A patriot who loves his country, cops, thinks every life matters, and despises fraud, and the blocking of free speech. I would never try to demand you dress a certain way... Its just a funny shirt. You should laugh at it rather than melt. Im sick of my freedoms being taken away, and really, this channel is for those who want to watch. No one is making you watch. If you hate the country, and hate who I am, so be it... But HATERS are not going to force me to change who I am or hide it. I love you no matter what shirt you wear, and even if you hate our police, hate our constitution, support fraud, etc... Those are your choices, and a lot of great Americans died so you could have the right to speak up about trying to end those rights and support socialism. #justgivepeaceachance #coexist

I agree, Dan. I'm sick and tired of these professional whiners and complainers. They see some malicious INTENT in everything because they are in a perennial state of victimhood. Everything they see becomes another example of something being done "TO" them. So instead of YOUR shirt being about what YOU want to wear for YOUR OWN enjoyment, to THEM it's something you're doing TO THEM with THEM in mind. These people very literally want thoughts and actions controlled according to THEIR own views of right and wrong. They do not want it to be a PERSONAL choice, but rather something deriving from the GROUP. They have little use for the INDIVIDUAL, because they see the individual as being a bad thing. They want everyone to bow to the COLLECTIVE according to rules they THEY make. You're dead right that our freedoms are being whittled away year by year. We better stand our ground or we'll never get it back.

I've been feeling that way this season. I needed better cold weather rain gear this year, and I found a good deal on a full kit, so I picked it up. But, wearing all of it at once, I've started to feel like I'm sticking out like a sore thumb. Lately, I've been thinking about throwing the heavy grey flannel over it, or picking up a decent vest with a totally different pattern, and wearing my cat-tail hoodie under that. I was second guessing that thought process a bit, until just now. I'm hitting it again tomorrow, and I'm gonna mix it up some. Thanks Dan!

This is an interesting view on camo I've never heard before when you talked about mixing it up to keep yourself small. The biggest thing that surprised me though was the comment about wearing blue jeans. I've watched a video once about a study on a deers sight and how the color blue sticks out like a sore thumb. Then again, I am not a scientist and just have to take their word for it. But what I also heard in that video was a deers ability to pick up movement. I absolutely believe this. Anyway, another great vid. I enjoy listening to your hunting experiences and try to apply them to my hunts as much as possible. BTW....Love the shirt!!

I'm sold on the uv glow thing. Other than that I agree all camo works in the surroundings it blends, I'm old enough to remember when Tre Bark came out, and thought I was becoming invisible, only to be busted. Back in those days I'd soak in baking soda, for 30-45 minutes before getting dressed in Tre Bark washed in laundry detergent. I'd carry baking soda mixed with water and mist me ever so often. When the uv killer stuff came out, the getting busted slowed waaay down. All that said still Mossy oak fan, they seem to have been more diverse in camo schemes, which I remember ticked Realtree off. At the end of the day a whitetail lives by his NOSE. Thanks Dan, like the shirt dude

The best camo brand out there is called “Stop moving!” The fact that a hunter can be dressed in a solid orange vest/jacket/hat and not be seen by deer within bow range squashes and camouflage theories. Also, observing air currents is another “make you invisible” camo that I wouldn’t walk into the woods without. Oh how this activity changed when commerce discovered money in the pockets of hunters.

My Dad is a Vietnam vet and used to hunt in military Camo called tigerstripe. It is a tight pattern mix of greens and some black, vertical and horizontal. If he was not moving, you could not see him at any distance, on the ground. Most modern Camo patterns are designed to be appealing to us consumers. To deer, it’s all about breaking up your outline, and staying still. Great comment on prey species noticing a predator’s eyes. When I get busted, I feel they are seeing my eyes, and will squint until the deer relaxes enough for a shot.
@Rhallifax2

Tigerstripe has horizonal stripes. It works great for a certain type of vegetation. This time of year, where I live, the woods are mostly a vertical pattern with the leaves all gone. Anyway, I don't think you can get the tigerstripe anymore, and the origional was made with an off brand of dye that faded.... too bad.

That is a very good point about having 3 different types of camo/coloring. One of the most important things I look for in camo is how quiet it is when moving, i.e. drawing a bow, shouldering a gun. I hunt pines and hardwoods so I use a darker pattern when in the pine trees

Personally I've noticed that when you get on the ground inside thick brush where you hardly even have shooting room you can blend in so well that only your scent would give you away. Hunting in a tree, try hanging an outfit (pants and shirt) up there on a clothes hanger and stand down on the ground 15 yards away and see how well it blends in. If you recognize it then the deer also recognize it because they live there. Personally I'd like to have an oak tree bark looking outfit for the late season so that i could look like part of the tree trunk. I think a lot of the time late season in a bare tree that your movement is picked off from a long way off and you don't even see the deer.

Based on my experience I feel like I get caught moving before my camo gives me up. I have my favorites, but I don’t believe one pattern works the best throughout the entire fall. It’s more important to blend into your surroundings than believing one size fits all. I love all your t-shirt Dan, even the ones that do not align with my views. I always wear different pants, top, gloves and headgear to help break up my silhouette. After over 50 years of deer hunting I don't think camo is necessary. Any pattern or solids in different shades of tans/browns/grays works well in my experience. Like you, I like flannels but again in those earth tone colors. When I do use camo I mix patterns and use only Realtree and/or Mossy Oak. Spending more on camo in the mountains of Virginia where visibility is short range is a waste of time and money from what I've found.

I don’t think your viewers would want to see you naked in camo paint Dan....lol...But I totally agree that blending is important. I blended so well that I a doe came in from behind me and walked within ten feet of me while I was setting in snow and down trees. Merry Christmas to Dan and Family.🎅🏻

Love the t-shirts Dan, I’d ware every one of them !! 👍 The political state in America is sickening but that’s another subject and channel. I totally agree on the camo, the key is to break up the human outline and hide the face, in my opinion no one makes a good camo because it’s the same from head to toe, like Dan says he wares different pants, jackets, vests etc., me too, if deer look at me I squint my eyes so they can’t see a face or I hold my bow in front of my face. They never look at your boots or your belt, it’s always right to your face !

In my experience, it’s camo that breaks up your silhouetted outline that works the best. I’ve found ASAT camo does that the best. I learned this still hunting around cattle. The cattle never really cared about any other camo pattern I wore. If they saw me move, they stay focused on me, even when I stood still. But when I wore the ASAT pattern head to toe, the cattle would notice me move, then when I stood still, they would lose focus on me. It was really an eye opener, because these cattle would start panicking when I would stand still. They would start mooing and pacing around, and even start moving toward the direction where they last saw me move. The same started happening around deer too. One time I was still hunting and jumped a doe and fawn, and they bounded to the top of a hill. The doe stopped to look back at me, and she could no longer see me because I was still. And that doe walked all the way back down to me until she was about 30 yards from me when she finally caught my scent and booked it. It was pretty incredible!
@jakefreakinclark

In one of your videos interviewing Andre camo gets discussed, and (if my memory is correct) he said he likes an olive drab or something similar, and that he feels as though the solid color can actually help hide your movement because there isn't a streak of pattern moving across the deer's vision. In this context I believe he was referring to the small movements you might make in a tree (as opposed to walking across a hillside, etc). I didn't see the vid on your channel so must've come across it on the beast forum. I got some olive drab wool overalls for christmas and I'm a little apprehensive about using them in a deciduous tree, but only time will tell.
@fishlovme
3 жыл бұрын
I think scent and how much you move if the deer does see you is way more important than the type of clothing you're wearing. I've set a deer blind out in the middle of a field once and the buck noticed the camo blind right away and just stared at it but didn't spook. Not until it got downwind of me did it finally take off.

I started hunting deer when I was 10. That’s 46 years ago. I remember starting out we didn’t have much and we tried to blend in with whatever we had. All my clothes had to be multi purpose, work, school, hunting etc. My dad always preached you have to be in the right place at the right time and be still. Learn how to read the woods. I’ve managed to take multiple deer every year with minimal equipment. I basically wear flannel shirt and brown or drab colored pants and I always wear a headnet. I hunt on the ground with a 12ga single shot shotgun. If he get his ass 50 yards or closer he’s dead. Don’t overthink it. Dan speaks the truth. Listen to him and learn his hunting tactics. After all my time in the woods I think he’s the real deal. Thanks Dan for all you do.

I think what a lot of people fail to mention during this conversation is the eyesight of all the other animals in the woods not just the deer. Everyone likes to talk about a deer eyesight. But even if a deer is colorblind and can't see your bright color the turkeys and other animals can see those colors and will quickly ruin your deer hunt for you.
@Diffidentone

There's a reason people have worn tartan and then later plaid patterns for hunting for thousands of years, because they work always have and always will. All one really needs is something to break up the human profile. I've only ever seen one tree stump in the woods that ever looked human shaped and over 12 years I never saw any deer sign within 50 yards of it until it rotted and fell over.

Agreed there is no one size fits all with camouflage. You need multiple colors, patterns, and warmth/comfort levels to be effective and consistent in taking game animals. Most major camo brands have a lot of money tied up into sponsorships and advertising so they have their brand pushed by big names. Just need to go with your gut and wear what is needed to blend in.

Finally, someone who confirms what I have been saying for years. No camo is good in all situations. I have been mixing and matching camo since I began bow hunting 43 years ago. It helps break up the human outline. I also could not care less about camo loyalty. I use what I think is going to help me blend in the area I'm hunting. Thanks for the great content Dan and keep the videos coming. I enjoy them very much.

I don’t have a ton of experience but have about it long and hard. Agree with most of Dans opinions, I’ve found that the shade of your background or nearby objects really is the most important thing. If your camp is dark but your khaki pants are the same shade as the dirt along a stream bank, your better off with the khaki. I do use the macros such as Predator and big pattern flannel but feel these work better in open areas or when skylit. Against a tree or rock a solid or bark pattern is fine. Mix it up agreed, I often wear snow camp on bottom when hunting against trees in the snow.

Just so you know, born in 1946 and from my youth I always wear jeans and some times jean shirt. Hunting in no camo and I still got what I was hunting. So for me camo really do not matter. You go ahead and buy the expensive camo all you want it doesn't matter. LOL

Where can I get one of those shirts Dan? I agree on wearing multiple patterns and no one camo is the best. Honestly the most important thing you must use on a hunt is the wind. If u do not hunt the wind correctly it doesn't matter how good your camo is. Great video.

For years I wore old military bdus in Woodland camo and when it got really cold I broke out the Carhartt duck brown bibs and coat. Killed lots of deer in them both. Brings back good memories but now in my later years i have a closer full of camo and i dont have to freeze in cotton long John's as a base layer lol

ASAT is where it's at. I thought it looked completely stupid until I studied it and then tried it. Unreal. The longer they stare, the less they see. Any season, any terrain. Love it.

Great point about having different camo so the deer pics out a shape different from a whole human.

I killed a deer in my underwear only. I slept in my deer stand made out of a grain wagon, had windows and a heater, woke up and there was a 300lb beast outside the wagon, I sat down and slowly opened the old sqeaky window, and got my gun ready and just waited for daylight , I was so worked up I didn't notice the cold

It’s necessary. Like you said dan, white camo dark forest. Definitely stand out... I think the old timers for red and black because it was warm and they were meat hunters lol

Being camouflaged is necessary, but using camo isn't. My dad has a pair of grey coveralls and they blend in perfectly with poplar trees. Between him and myself those coveralls have shot dozens of deer. You don't always need to buy crazy expensive clothes to hunt.
