I am bumped when I found this out. Apple scribble don’t support the kanas except for kanji. A huge miss of opportunity in my opinion, and it would help a lot when studying on language app like duo lingo.

Selected Kanji appears because those are borrowed from Traditional Chinese, which is supported by the Apple Pen.

氣 is just 気's 旧字体。 Maybe you could try switching to simplified Chinese, if there is the option. I've had better results with it than with traditional when using it without a pencil, anyway. Personally, I'm using Mazec for handwritten Japanese input at the moment.

Thanks so much for doing this. I currently have a Shield Tablet, which does allow for Japanese writing recognition. And I've had it for over 5 years. My screen is crack, in addition to the device been old for newer apps. Some which I need to side load. I'm looking at a new device that's good for handwriting and drawing, in addition to be a gaming tablet. The only ones that cover this are Galaxy Tabs and iPads. I can't find a video like this on a Galaxy, but I'm guessing Gboard should cover it. In the Shield is the default keyboard that include it. But been android it goes around.

No problem, glad you found it helpful! 5 years is a pretty good amount of time to use a device, so that’s impressive. I do like the iPad a lot, despite being a longtime Android guy for my phones. For drawing and writing the Apple Pencil can’t be beaten, but yeah I’ve been kind of bothered by the lack of Japanese handwriting recognition. I’ve been quite happy with the Gboard handwriting recognition on my phone, so it is still my go-to for looking up kanji I can’t read.

Ugh, it seems you have to write really quickly. For someone with dysgraphia, that makes the scribble feature almost impossible. I just wanna use it to practice kanji. :(

Ah yes, unfortunately it doesn’t have any options for adjusting the speed at which it recognizes the writing, not even within the Accessibility settings. So it still feels like much of a work-in-progress to be honest.

So we need to change keyboard to Japanese function then can start scribble in Japanese? Please help me

Keyboard function is separate from the Scribble settings. But as seen in the video there is no Japanese Scribble. Just English alphabet and Chinese characters. Maybe someday Apple will add more languages when their machine learning models can work for recognizing more handwriting.

As in Scribble doesn’t work? You will have to go into the settings to turn on Scribble. But as I showed in the video, it doesn’t work for Japanese kana at all.

When you start writing with the Apple Pencil, the pop-up menu has an option to change your input language! And they added Japanese in a recent update finally!
