🎥 Does Islam really equal terror? How the media brainwashes you?
As is well known, in late October 2023, a very serious assassination attempt took place in the northeastern US state of Maine, where a white man killed almost two dozen people. It is undisputed that this attack was an act of terrorism, but looking across the broad spectrum of the Hungarian press, there is only one word that is missing from the coverage of the incident: terror. It is very interesting to look at the linguistic communication of domestic organs from the left to the right, which have very consciously avoided the use of the adjective terror. This also means that we can see a very strong double standard of media and politics at work in practice, because if the perpetrator had been darker skinned, linked to Islam and or from an immigrant background, the use of the terror/terrorist label would have been evident across the entire domestic press palette. However, because the perpetrator was white and unaffiliated with Islam, an unheard of variety of headlines were used by the media, with the exception of terror, of course. In other words, today's lecture is a reflection on the double standard between the perception of terror and terror.
