Is complete darkness really required for optimum colonization in your mushroom grows? Some say yes, others say light has no appreciable effect. As with most things, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. No doubt it depends on a variety of factors including light wavelength, intensity, and species of mushroom being cultured. I decided to test the effect of direct fruiting light (6500K LED, 12 on/12 off) vs. relative darkness on king oyster (Pleurotus eryngii) mycelium in a side by side comparison. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I did check the temperature a couple of times during incubation. I took readings on the surface of the uncovered side, and under the cover with a digital meat thermometer. If there was a temperature difference, the thermometer didn't pick it up.
