Oatchi is what I'd like to call "customizable accessibility". He's as OP as you want to do be, and as broken as you make him. Should you want a more traditional experience you can just not use him, if you want him to not be too OP you can just not upgrade him too much. Ultimately, you as the player get to choose how you want to build him, and as such have full control on your experience.

there is also meta potential: Yes, people can use him to trivialize tasks in a casual playtrough. But he will quickly become an essential, highly complex asset for speed runs. Pikmin 1 is challenging in a casual play-trough; in Pikmin 4 people can adjust their difficulty. Funny enough, using Oatchi as a second command for e.g. make the game both easier (you get more things done in a day) and harder (you have less pikmin per task an you need to keep track of a second team)

Honestly doesn't matter if the dog is op or not. What matters is whether it makes the game more fun or not and it absolutely does. In my opinion, I think Nintendo wants to appeal to more casual players with this niche title. Since people love dogs therefore people will love Oatchi. And that is a good thing, since more people will buy a game title that may otherwise seem like a bizarre choice. Hopefully, players returning to this game who are familiar with the series will not be forced to soley rely on Oatchi. Personally, I will not rely solely on Oatchi when I play the game. My fingers are crossed to learn that Pikmin 4 offers more challenging level design similar to the later caves in pikmin 2.

I’ve noticed that whenever you try to speak to a captain as Oatchi, they sort of talk down to him in a patronizing way. It’s obvious that Oatchi is incredibly intelligent, as he can do all the same things as a captain and preform complex tasks with the pikmin; and I’d like to think he has a deep inner mind, and finds the captain’s remarks very eye-rolly. This is probably why he takes a liking to you (the main character), because you treat him as a like-minded intelligent being and work alongside him in that way.

As adult who spent majority of my life as a gamer. It’s hard to call games challenging unless they have hard difficulty setting and even then sometimes it doesn’t feel too challenging. The thing with oatchi is, if the first area is anything to go by, it's all about sacrifice and balance. Every pikmin game in the series is easy as can be if you just take your time, the only challenge comes from pushing yourself to move as fast as you can. Yes I can have oatchi carry this heavy object instead of 30 pikmin, but that means I won't have oatchi with me for a fairly long while. No oatchi means no jumping which greatly limits where you can go. If I send oatchi to carry something then, unless I have a plan set up with stuff I can do as only the captain, the temporary loss of both movement and a 2nd captain will cost me a large amount of time. It adds an extra layer to planning and, as a result, means if you're playing the game in the "challenging" way then he's actually making it more challenging.

i think oatchi is awesome - gives a lot of decision making because while oatchi can do a lot of stuff pikmin can do; theres only one oatchi so even if you have a high buff level or bite level theyre still fairly slow and weak on their own the fact that there is only one oatchi too also means you need to pick between keeping oatchi by your side or letting oatchi go help carry something back; or seperate from your captain to do stuff similar to a second captain being able to use oatchi to knock down treasures that yellows might be needed for; or for crossing water where youd normally need ice or blues i think is fine because you need oatchi to not be busy dragging stuff or being seperate or digging or fighting; and if you do need oatchi to do any of those things you also need oatchi to jump up small ledges too which means if you do leave oatchi doing other stuff you cant move around as much maybe oatch is overpowered; i dunno; but i see them more as a support option than anything completely busted. the charge attack with pikmin is pretty strong admittedly; but its also in a way similar to charging. otherwise i feel like oatchi adds a lot of strategy and choice to the game since you need to think about if letting oatchi go do something else is a good idea; like if you have other business you need to do with pikmin that doesnt require going up ledges and whatnot i had no idea that oatchi couldnt get knocked out for real though; i think that kinda blows (but i also get it because it could basically end your day instantly if you need to get up somewhere with nothing else to do; or could stop you from finishing a cave or something) all of that being said; ignoring any and all balance stuff; i totally agree that they are just super fun to use. its a really cool way of having a second captain and i think all the decision making possibilities for oatchi make them super fun

What I dislike more is the "reset time" feature when something happens, it kinda defeats any challenge IMO, even if its optional, as for the pup, I'm mixed on it but I kinda don't like it, it feels kinda silly to me to have it in this type of game, but that's just my own personal opinion, also it seems all the enemies either have way lower health pools, or the pikmin are extremely powerful in the newer iterations, which makes battles end really fast.

“Rewind time” is literally a thing in all pikmin games (just hit the reset button for non switch games, and close the software for switch games), and in some pikmin games you are even allowed to go to previous days to unfuck your situation, so Nintendo giving up and making it an official feature isn’t atrocious especially when it’s optional like the previous versions of “Rewind time” (aka, resetting the game to go back to the beginning of the day/sublevel because you lost a single purple pikmin.)

@@GoodlyData86596 We're not talking about direct sublevels or day restarts though, this is basically a "undo" button with no downsides and the ability to just undo any events that isn't "good" while still allowing you to keep most of the progress you've made, part of the charm of pikmin was trying your best to survive and collect treasures/fruit if you lost that let you learn what to do next time and you just had to build up your forces again, you learn from your mistakes but it still affected you more. At least the older games made it so you had to restart the cave or day to do this, this is basically killing any challenge that the game may or may not have had instantly, and the health pools of the enemies is already really low, now you removed any consequences for messing up as well, theres literally no downsides anymore to losing your pikmin besides a few seconds to press a magic eraser button, it makes people less cautious besides that specific scenario and instantly ruins any fear in being careful. If I get pikmin 4, I won't use anything that involves resetting a minute back, it's extremely broken and stupid to allow that in any game that has any sort of consequence. For my case, pikmin 2 while having its annoying moments, struck a good balance (most of the time lol) with these things, I am excited however to see some stuff getting brought over.

@@OPPEYRADY i agree, I’m trying to beat the submerged castle rn as we speak and I feel like having to do over a sublevel from the very beginning due to a mistake I made is fair, but rewinding like 30 seconds or a couple of minutes probably wouldn’t be. Because although I’m one who would rather lose progress than pikmin having a “undo the one thing you fucked up” button instead of a “undo everything, including the things that went well, because everything has gone to shit” button is just removing the downside of hitting reset instead of just dealing with it, and it was due to the downside of resetting the day/sublevel (being, *everything* gets reset, including the parts that you would rather keep.) that has stopped me from just resetting every time a pikmin died. @@OPPEYRADY That's not true. In Pikmin 2, it saved on every single sublevel. You never had to reset more than a single floor, never a whole cave. And it saved when you came out of a cave, too. The thing is that when a game is too easy it is boring, if there is no challenge to get to an end goal then the game will feel empty once it's done. Many nintendo games fall under this category, with most of its audience being on the younger side they feel the need to hold the hand of the player through the whole game without taking into consideration of the older audience, I don't want to play mario if the final boss can be beaten in just a couple minutes.

Oatchi is a lot of fun, and I love him, but I personally think he is a little TOO overpowered. He not only can carry up to 100 weight in his mouth, but he can also completely remove the difficulty of managing your Pikmin because they all stay on his back, making dodging creatures a joke. Also, because he respawns in an instant, there’s no risk, so you aren’t careful with Oatchi at all. I’m probably going to do a run where I try and use Oatchi as little as possible to see how much harder it is without him.

My only concern is that you can only use 3 pikmin types at a time. I’m hoping that limiter is just for the demo, or if its an upgradeable thing like the pikmin quantity limit being upgraded uses flarlic

I think they said in the official Pikmin 4 site that the type limit is going to presist through out the whole game, without the possibility of upgrading it, it seems. Although, I personally don't have a problem with the type limit, since it makes you think more about the types of Pikmin you should use for the majority of the day.

For me, oatchi is literally the main reason i want pikmin 4, no joke Being able to do so much with oatchi, train him, use him as a mount, and just treat him like the good boi he is adds so much to the game. Why use plants as slaves when you can train the goodest boi? And ofcourse, pikmin itself is another main reason, this will be my first pikmin game.

how does having 1 more member who can help fight and carry things take away from the pikmin? just because he can do things that pikmin can do are you gonna leave all the pikmin in the onion and only use Oatchi? youre gonna have a pretty tedious game carrying only 1 item at a time and slowly chipping away at boss health meters.

This game is nearly perfect except *two* things. The camera was a little difficult to get used to and was making me squint despite me having totally fine vision. And two, the auto aim. *the auto aim is infuriating and not helpful* Pikmin 3 did it better where you could manually aim or if you hovered over the enemy/object you could auto lock if you *wanted to* with ZR. (I also despised Ice Pikmin for not being Pikmin-like but then once I used them I didn’t really care as much since their abilities are cool.(the pun was not intended at first but I’m rolling with it))

I would much rather just have a second captain instead of oatchi. The vase breaking is an unecessary obstacle that only serves the purpose of giving oatchi a unique use. Oatchi also really oversimplifies the combat. Instead of controlling a chaotic squad of pikmin, they're now just one fast moving unit. Most fights were just wait until you can charge with oatchi, and then your pikmin instantly latch on and kill the enemy. The rest of oatchi's functions just make the pikmin less unique, and the captain less dependent on the pikmin. Overall he just feels like an unecessary gimmick.

I caught you could play as oatchi, but I didn't believe it would be possible to do as much with him as you can! Honestly I feel like oatchi is fine. If the player doesn't invest in his abilities, either from the upgrades or the training, he isnt THAT good that he breaks the game from the start (Like purples were in 2), He only becomes OP if the player prioritizes him over themselves, and honestly, I think thats fair. Now if you'll excuse me, You've planted the idea of doing the demo oatchi only and I wanna do that now.

While I certainly can't say for sure, I think the ability to revive Oatchi will remain relatively balanced in later areas with stronger enemies. The reason being, if you revive Oatchi immediately, he'll be on death's doorstop from that point onwards. This doesn't matter in the Terrace, as it lacks difficult enemies that can hit Oatchi if you're not trying to get him killed, but I can imaging it'd be really annoying and impractical to repeatedly go back to your ship and revive him on 1 HP, over and over, against a foe you're actually having trouble with, enough that Oatchi's HP was able to be depleted in the first place. You would have to either go out and do things on your own for a time, or stand in place for however long it takes for him to actually heal, and I think that's enough to put some level of consequence to losing him, even when it's still forgiving at the same time. There's an upgrade you can buy that increases his HP a little, but it seems to really just let him take 1 more hit. You can also train him to heal faster after being knocked down, but that requires spending your Pup Drives on his Heal skill, rather than something that would probably be more useful in most cases, like higher damage, higher carry strength, or the various additional commands that can be unlocked for him. It is possible to heal Oatchi by giving him nectar, but nectar isn't really *that* common. This means that, unless you play super carefully (and probably never let Oatchi get hit to begin with), you'll probably want to use a decent amount of nectar to keep your pikmin squad all flowered up. Overall, while there are a lot of options (maybe even 1 or 2 that I missed), every single one has some kind of drawback to consider, in the event that you lose Oatchi in even a moderately difficult area. So, as long as medium (or higher) difficulty areas exist, and it looks like they will from a couple trailers I've seen, the way Oatchi can be revived seems like it'll still be somewhat balanced, especially to players who want their squad to remain as powerful and effective as possible.

the carrying strength oatchi can have is absurd when you look at how little pikmin you can have on the field. Oatchi as strong as 30 pikmins with 100 Pikmins on the field? Sure! You can either have him on treasure or fight duty, no worries. It is a choice and both make sense. 50 Pikmins on the field and oatchi can carry as much as 30? Yeah, let Oatchi carry the stuff back to base. He is just a tripple purple pikmin.

making what was hard in the older games, allows for more "advanced" game design. this means instead of focusing on gameplay element X which is easy/auto now, game element Y can now exist because the player isnt distracted oatchi was clearly some form of bulbmin big boy reworked since we never got to have a BIG BOY bulbmin, we'll likely find puffmin and bulbmin AND the night pikmin ghosts in caves.

Pikmin 4 demo is stupidly easy and Oatchi is a big reason why. I do agree with most people on that. But i have a feeling that because this is far and away the largest pikmin game ever it will become harder. The first 3 games were successful in increasing the difficulty as you went along but all started out pretty damn easy. It just took less time in those games to get harder because they were smaller games so had less time to ease the player into it. There might also be a difficulty setting introduced into the main game like in pikmin 3 deluxe. Or the different areas might have a higher difficulty. The demo only gave us the first area and that was easy but theres no guarantee that subsequent areas will be as easy. I also think that night mode will be really hard because you will probably need a lot of those glow pikmin and you may still be limited in terms of how many can be on the field as well as being distracted by constantly needing to protect the little ant hill things they live in. It seems that glow pikmin unlike all other pikmin are still vulnerable in their "Onion"

That is exactly what I did when I played the demo, but the problem is that Oatchi has so many utilities and can do so much -specially granting a lot of mobility in the larger maps of pikmin 4- that you constantly feel like you are just wasting time and everything moves slower if you’re basically ignoring one of the best tools that the game has to offer. I really want to buy pikmin 4, and I have tried not to spoil myself the game by looking at videos, but Oatchi’s presence is really ruining the experience a lot for me.

I like Oatchi he is cute and it feels like the game has you playing as a dog as the main character anyway. Besides the little guy on top really has no back story or dialog and it can't even think for it self. Everyone back at base always has the commentary when you find something instead of "your character" commenting or you even thinking on it 1st. You can't even walk up to a wall and think about what to do "before" someone else back base has something to say about it. You really feel "like a dog" in the game for the way the commentary treats you lol...
