Since the original look was inspired by circus strongmen, I think a cool update would be for the trunks and tights to be pro-wrestling gear. You need a break in colour at the bottom of the torso so the viewer can easily see how the torso twists in different poses. It's a small thing, but visually it's super important. The movement of the torso is one of the most important parts of a pose in drawing.
@AtomikaBlerd

This is the answer right here. Color theory is important, yes. But placement of color is just as important. Having the red below the torso adds dynamism to the costume and works better in live action since it won’t look like a blue blob that’s obviously CG. It’s the same reason why having patterns on CG costumes are important. It tricks the eye into thinking it’s real.

That "Ideal" is like a Rockwell painting of a boyscout troop being molested by their troop leader. Its a fcking bright red Cod Piece helping his genitals stand out to his viewers. Gross. Also its Ironic that the fake nostalgia crew always want to celebrate the 50s, the decade with the highest rates of fathers raping their daughters (the Greatest Generation have a lot of horrid facts about who they really were). Don't get me wrong. Before I grew up and grew to understand what it looks like when an adult is trying to push their sexuality, rather than being a benign safe adult figure, free of the desire for their DCK to stand out in public. When I was a little kid, I wore undaroos, tighty whites, and Supermans red trunks made me think Sups was a big little kid inside. Once you hit your pre-teens you know Sups is not like little kid inside, if he's waring a bright red cod piece in public. The Flynn Effect means kids are always sharper than the previous generation, and while super's outfit once evoked the image of the victorian strong man, that's not what it read like to Boomers-Millenians, and it is overdue for us to take the D out of superman's alien outfit before his sexual garishness IS what sups is known for.

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Visually, it breaks up his shape so that his physicality is clearly conveyed from every angle. Without them, it can make his limbs look weirdly stumpy (see Henry Cavill). Also, no trunks counterintuitively calls *more* attention to his crotch, and he ends up looking kinda naked. Btw for those that don't know, Superman (and all the superheroes who descend from him creatively) wears shorts on the outside because his costume is based on a circus strong man of the day, and the shorts reinforce the seat of their pants just in case the spandex tears during a performance.

Not actually obviously but the shaping of the armor on his legs around the black undersuit resemble them. Edit: After watching i largely disagree with the finale point purely because there are so many versions of the suit in the comics that don’t have the trunks and it’s enough that they’ve become non essential. Same can be said to an even greater extent with a lot of supporting characters. If there are comic Superman stories without them there can easily be movie Superman stories without them. Easy solution for me is making the Superman suit a two-piece. A top and a pair of trousers. Let it not be made out of spandex, but don't make yet another heavily padded muscle suit. Just the proper amount of padding I think will be fine. A bit like Shazam/Billy Batson's original Captain Marvel suit from the comics from way back before they remodified it into the post-mo version that follows the contour of the body too much. Also, make the belt an actual functional tool as a, well, belt. Make the belt yellow to represent the yellow Sun that activates Clark's power, but make the head of the belt red. It's to represent the color of his blood, which is red, much like the color of the human blood. Make sure the proportion of the actor's body is balanced, and there you go. Bye bye, diapers! No need for shorts either!

The OG Captain Marvel drip is seriously underrated. The side cape, the aviator jacket with buttons, the boots, the collar. But unfortunately that style of drawing doesn't lend itself to the "nude suit" style of drawing that superhero comic artists like to rely on, which is why you'll see every fibre of muscle under a suit instead of a more generalized muscular form (not to mention the natural areas the suit wrinkles up) as would be natural.

While I am someone in the camp of "I don't really care one way or the other" when it comes to the Superman shorts thing, I do understand your point of it being more aesthetically pleasing for lack of a better description, though I also see the point of for more modern adaptations the shorts do seem a bit goofy. Wanda's headpiece from Marvel also seems like a really goofy thing to use in live action, however what the MCU did with Wanda's headpiece made it work, so I'm curious if there's a way to do sort of a similar happy medium thing like that when it comes to Superman's shorts, like maybe instead of it being underwear on the outside of his suit, maybe have it as part of his suit in some form or fashion like some kind of thigh and leg armor or something. I'm really excited to see what you have coming up with the Superman casting videos, and would also love to see you tackle the rest of the League as well. I am curious though, there's a couple characters you could do different things for, like for Green Lantern did you have just one in mind, like Hal or John, and then the rest of the casting be like Kilowog and Sinestro and Atrocitus and the other Lanterns and such, or do you plan on doing all the Earth Green Lanterns? Maybe you could even do Alan Scott in the video as well if you wanted to do the Justice Society. Or like with Flash, did you just plan on focusing on one, like Barry or Wally, or did you plan on doing all the Flashes and other Speedsters as well?

I respectfully disagree. I specialize in writing and character design, so I understand the visual reasons why the design needs to be broken up and why people associate the shorts with the classic version of Superman, but a character design only determines so much. If you're a good writer who understands what Superman represents, you can write a good Superman, with or without the shorts. The difference is an aesthetic one more than anything else, but it has been equated with nostalgia to the point that everyone thinks "These Supermen were good and they had the shorts" and therefore come to the conclusion that the shorts are what makes or breaks Superman, but there are bad depictions of Superman with the shorts, and editing the Justice League cartoon to remove Superman's shorts wouldn't make him a badly written character. Most Supermen that are good have the shorts because most Superman writers think that adapting the classic version of the character means adapting the shorts, but that's not necessarily true. You can write a movie that retells the events of the first Superman comics and use a design for Superman based on the New 52 one. Just because people haven't done it doesn't mean it can't be done. You aren't somehow disrespecting the legacy of the character by combining story elements from older versions with visual elements from newer versions. You don't have to have the shorts to do the character justice with your writing. To claim that the design is what makes the character disrespects the concept of Superman as a character. If you have a well written Superman in Batman's costume, you should be able to tell it's Superman from the writing and characterization alone. I don't think you should put Superman in Batman's costume, but if you can't, you haven't written a good Superman. If one aesthetic decision makes or break your character, you haven't written the character very well. TLDR: Good Writing > Red Shorts

Superman was designed to remind a circus strongman, with flamboyant colors, and obviously those slips. In 1939 they had to use what appealed at the time. I support Sups with shorts :)

I think this vid makes a strong argument for keeping the trunks but I don’t think they’re necessary from a character design POV. Like many others have said, the trunks were originally included to invoke the costuming of strongmen of the time, but that connotation is largely lost in the modern day unless you’re a big Superman or trivia fan. Character design is about asking “what does this character’s appearance say about the character?” and I think at this point, Superman’s costume just says “Superman.” It’s not a bad thing-Superman is one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in pop culture ever, up there with the Mouse and Jesus-but for people who maybe take Superman for granted or dismiss him as a Big Blue Boy Scout, who don’t really get the heart of the character, it doesn’t do much towards giving them a better understanding of what Superman’s all about aside from the bright primary colors. If I were lucky enough to be able to design Superman’s costume for a big budget movie that would reach a wide audience, I’d keep his top half essentially the same but put him in what looks like casual wear pants with cuffs rolled up over tall chelsea boots, akin to his look at either end of the New 52. Give him pockets and a fly! Keep him colorful, for sure, with bright red boots and a red belt with a yellow buckle similar to his Rebirth look, but you can make his pants a shade of blue darker than his shirt if the belt isn’t quite enough to break up the colors. At Superman’s heart, despite his incredible power and alien origin, he’s just a normal guy, he’s a friend, and I think that’s what a lot of people miss. Casual clothes like anybody else wears, instead of an alien jumpsuit, would go a long way towards communicating that at a glance and make him feel more relatable.

this is something that scott niswander said that i agree with, that his trunks help to humanize him, in the dceu, he’s a a god wearing alien battle armor that is pretty much using the city as a weapon, with the trunks it makes him seem less scary, because the goofiness of the shorts help to mellow everything else about him out

I don't see the trunks as a priority, but yes, I do think the desire to remove them (which to me makes him look almost naked) is indicative of a larger problem of trying to "make Superman cool", which feels fundamentally cynical. Superman doesn't need to follow a standard of cool. He's supposed to *set* the standard by being Great, which outranks cool any day. Superman makes being wholesome and kind better than being cool. He shows how silly it is to even care about being cool in the first place. Booster Gold wants to be cool. Superman couldn't care less.

Since Batman was mentioned, I have a related question. Does anyone think the classic blue and grey costume with the yellow bat symbol could work in live-action, or like the shorts would that be too silly for Batman to have and he should always wear black? Personally I think it could, I think that they could design a suit that’s based on that costume without it being silly.
@ReasonerHeracles

Blue and Grey is done in comics to accurately show highlights and shadows in the case of Batman. The same effect can be accomplised with lighting in real life, so, "No."

The blue and gray suit is my favorite batman look! I think you could totally do an adaption of say the HUSH suit and it look great! Plus the 90's movies made the gold circle look cool so why not?
@ReasonerHeracles
Жыл бұрын
@thatKONNORguy The 90's were a time when more camp in superhero film was acceptable. We are probably not going back to that state for a while yet, if ever. Some things in comics just don't translate well in live action and would turn general audiences off. Movies are a business and there are not enough hard core comics fans that would go to the movies to justify the risk of making 1-to-1 adaptations of the costumes: Even Marvel realizes this. I'm glad you enjoy the grey and blue look for Batman, but just realize that it will likely stay a comics exclusive look until camp is more acceptable in these films to general audiences.
@jakerobinson9475
Жыл бұрын
@@ReasonerHeracles I feel like that was true years ago, but not anymore. Look at some of the costumes that have come out in recent years that are almost completely accurate to the comic versions that people have been accepting of, most of which are by Marvel. Also they don’t need to do spandex or anything with Batman which is what I assume you are picturing when you say camp, they could just design a suit similar to what he wears now but with that colour scheme. Why wouldn’t that work?
@ReasonerHeracles
Жыл бұрын
@@jakerobinson9475 I mean, I'd have to see a design. But I don't know that it would work. And if it didn't and turned off a bunch of the general audience, that could be the death kneel for comic book movies.

I'm not sure that if they drew him with it on today it would actually be viewed as or explained as being trunks. I think it's just another color on his suits' pants.
@Marnie_C

I like to think the trunks are there because of his childhood. He was the first superhero so there wasn't any template to follow and as a result the trunks are something specific to him, Captain Marvel (Shazam) didn't even emulate the trunks when he was created to compete with Superman. The trunks are meant to emulate those seen by strong men at the time (think body builders). Clark grew up in the country so I like to think circuses visited his town a lot so he would see strong men in their trunks. When he started superheroing, he pick an image that he thought meant strength. While Flash's outfit is to allow him to be more aerodynamic and Batman's outfit is meant to make him stealthy yet intimidating, Clark's outfit is meant to invoke his idea of strength. Superman doesn't need a costume as he is bullet proof, but he wears it (including the trunks) because he thinks it looks cool. It humanizes Superman.

I lean towards No, but I’m mostly indifferent to the trunks. That being said I think a red belt aesthetically adds the color to that part of the suit that is need that trunks do, but a belt is definitely a little bit more practical in my opinion.

The green m&m’s point is so interesting. Yes yes yes. Strictly from a design perspective, his costume needs something around the midsection, or itd just be strictly all blue. Originally the trunks were there to help the artist, as well as keep things from not looking so monotonous on the comic page. That said, base superman HAS been depicted without the trunks in a number of instances. The DCMAU series comes to mind, as well as the Injustice comics (and game) which borrowed several aspects from that suit, and i know theres several others that do something similar. However for this particular case, they used a belt and these weird.. leg things? to help separate the torso and the hips to address the monotonous problem, and i personally think they did a pretty good job. Is it a perfect fit for every scenario? Probably not, but i think it is good aesthetically, and you really dont notice the lack of trunks unless youre specifically looking for it. Atleast, i didnt :P

Superman's costume was based on the old 'circus strongman' costume, but the more important role the underwear play is, like you said, to break up all the blue. So just colour the blue leotard red where the underwear would go, just don't make it look like underwear...done.

Like Snyder said, the shorts are a holdover from Victorian Era strongman. They can go, but I would like something else there. Give Superman a belt similar to Batmans. He wouldn't need Batmans gadgets but maybe he could have some backup Kryptonite, or something to help him fight off magic, or something like that. Make it more fun that way.

I think one key thing in this whole debate is the idea that superman has to be cool in some way. Superman is inherently kinda goofy. He’s always optimistic. He’s always hopeful. He’s all of those things in a very outward, obvious way. Smiling at civilians, saving cats. And that’s the beauty of it. Superman is the most powerful thing in the universe, he constantly puts his life at risk but he never lets it get in the way of his moral fibre and his incorruptible spirit. There has to be a lighthearted and silly element to him in my opinion
