We lived in Thailand for 3 years and we have had phad krapao khai and so many thai dishes in wonderful small street side restaurants like these that actually represents the wonderful thailand in general, and we have never had stomach problems just because the food were from "street side" restaurants, like come on! One thing is assured that some of the most tastiest local thai dishes can be found in restaurants like these where the humble owners and home chefs cook from their heart and they know the real recipes, trust me! To be fair, thais are generally very clean and they make sure to keep their surroundings clean as well. Really miss the local vibes of Bangkok and hope to go back soon!

In my opinion many Thais not very clean, especially street food stuff. Wooden Cutboards they cut raw chicken on it and later on the cooked chicken , without cleaning it all day (in tropical conditions). The Street-Food you get is mostly made of the cheapest stuff they find on the market, often highly contaminated with pesticides (lack of control). The oil they use for cooking is the cheapest also often Palm-Oil or Soybean-oil (unhealthy). Cooking conditions are for Western Standards really unclean, highly contaminated with pesticides, use massive amounts of sugar and Oil. you maybe get not sick but Thai food is really far away from "Healthy food" For me Thai food ist mostly too Sweet and Oily mixed with chilli.

@@iPlany With due respect, I agree to some points that you have mentioned about the vendors not being hygenic enough and etc, but you also have to keep in mind that the people who are street side vendors are just simple earners who works day and night under scorching heat, feeding hundreds of people at such a cheap price. Not only just tourists, most of the thai population are dependent on street side vendors because it is comparitively much affordable and less time consuming than buying groceries and cooking at home. Its absolutely an individual's choice where they want to eat from, expensive restaurants or street side vendors selling the same food but at different prices. Thailand street food is famous all around the world for its taste, uniqueness, wide range and variety and the love that can be tasted through their food, and the best part is that it is affordable.

As a former chef I didn’t see a dirty surface in the whole place. On the street, with all the traffic passing by, it only takes a few days for the dust there to mix with stir fry oil to create dark grey fur everywhere. That place was spotless. Good job with meat storage. Plus those places don’t get more than a few days worth of supplies from the market at a time. I admit though that some morning market vendors sketch me out sometimes with how they handle their proteins. Love Thai street food!!

I lived in Thailand for over 5 years. I also enjoyed lots of street food 😋 In all that time, I only ever got food poisoning twice. Once in a Western brand name 5 star hotel. The other time, from ice (made from contaminated water) in a random bar I'd never been to before. I stand by the theory that Thai street food, particularly from street carts, where they literally can't store more than they can prepare and sell on any given day. So, their food is likely to be far fresher than restaurants with cold storage facilities. I definitely recommend trying Thai street food and tiny places just like the one in this video!

George Orwell writes of it in his book , Down and Out in Paris and London, whereby the elaborate dishes coming out the kitchen out the back served to the rich at posh hotels and restaurants was handled, arranged and touched by so many chefs that one was more likely to get sick. Just don't be upset, but embrace the adventure, if you get something you didn't order due to misinterpretation. Great video! My first trip I was sick every night for the month as well as a few people in my group even though we only ate at high end restaurants (just not used to the different bacteria ) I was foolishly eating raw lettuce in salads etc. but my second month long trip I was more daring and started eating at mom and pop spots and only got sick once but I’m pretty sure it was the Thai moonshine from the party lol. My third trip was two months and I ate tons of street food and only at mom and pop shops like from your video and didn’t get sick at all even eating raw veggies. And only once during 20 days in Vietnam…At this point I’m not worried at all I’ve got so much exposure..555. Now all I eat is places like this they’re the best!

Love it, unfortunately the same thing here in Vancouver would be $15 each. It is like Anthony Bourdain said, street food vendors are not going to poison their neighbors. Sometimes there is bacteria and it may be a case that your body is not used to it, ie think about drinking water in mexico or another country.

In California we are down to the last vacant 1-5 acre parcel’s of land in most cities, inevitably they bulldoze a lot and fill it with an extremely poor selection of massive chain corporate fast food - Starbucks/McDonalds/KFC/Subway/And some fancy overpriced “heath food chain”. Then people line up in their cars in-the drive through with the line out into the parking lot as anti social as can be, brainwashed by “gotta have it” thoughts given to them by fast food ads. Any new type or style food has a monolithic barrier to entry - $1-5 million to install one of these stores, takes a year to build it from the time you sign the lease, then public demand had to be swayed by some marketing trick or just blasting hundreds of thousands in adds - rather than draw people on the quality of the food. Finally you get underpaid, undertrained workers who don’t care at all about food - just need a job and hate their situation - how can they perform the art of making perfect food off directions on the wall??! - they will be disgruntled and one of the teenage staff will poop in the Taco Bell re-fried beans, you will eat it and the corporate owners will laugh at how much money they made but HEY at least the store was well lit and the soulless dining room will be clean! 90% of the cost of western food is in the rent/wages/overhead while 10% put into the food but hey whatever you need to give you the illusion of “clean food” 🤪 Me - I’m all for Thai street food where the cook has dedicated their life to what they do and it’s all they do. These people care about what they serve you because they will loose business if they are bad. The food is brought in from market daily and not much of it is ever processed ingredients because the entire country is made up of small farms growing real food. You are not paying for the high rent and franchise fees - you are paying far less because it’s just the food. I’m back in LOS in a week and it’s all street food for me.

😄 I even passed out once and end up in a hospital because of food poisoning in Thailand. Im still eating, yearning for thai-street food, it is so delicious.

It’s the street food left out for ages that makes you sick , not this freshly cooked stuff!

I usually get a quirky stomach once a trip. I think my gut just needs an adjustment period. I love these places. They're all over S.E. Asia and have incredible food for half of what I pay at home. I think I'd have just as big a chance of getting the trots if I ate at the KFC down the street.

Thanks for the video ! A bit wary of those places, but coming to Thailand in a few weeks, and I am going to trust your advice! I will contact you from my hospital bed if things go awry!!

I'm staying in France for almost 4 years. Before moving to Paris, I rarely ate spicy food because I could not find much of Asian ingredients in countryside. But you can find them easily in Asian quartier of Paris. At first, my stomach could not handle spiciness too. Moreover, I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So I had to increase spiciness moderately for my beloved dishes. Thanks for VDO and hope you enjoy Thailand.

The only thing that scares me is that these places don’t look like I’m supposed to walk in. What if I accidentally walk into somebody‘s home? They should put ‚Welcome‘ signs for those ignorant tourists like me 🤭

Yes, I like how you talk about Thai street food restaurants like that. It's an invitation for most people who don't dare open up to that kind of environment. but if you notice You know it's a people's house so it doesn't look very clean. Certain kitchen utensils, of course, don't change every month and each day they don't serve a single dish. If it's not clean or has bacteria as some comments say. Of course, I've been eating like this for 17 years. I'm probably sick. But I'm fine hahaha

I am a Thai person living in Phatthalung Province. in the south of Thailand I travel to many provinces in Thailand for tourism. I traveled to the central region North, Northeast, and as a Thai person, I guarantee that the street food stalls in Thailand definitely not make you sick

Also, it's been my experience traveling abroad that street food is generally one of the safest food options abroad. The worst food risk (in my experience) are buffet-type restaurants where the food has been sitting around.
