Love your content! I live in the US and I can totally relate to what you're saying, since people here are saying a lot of things similarly. To me it's all about the context. Chinese language can be like that as well. Words can carry different meanings in varying occasions. One thing about English or Irish people though: what they are saying can be brutal and brutally funny at the same time!
I also saw this article on the internet before! Thanks for this explanatory video and the algorithm of KZitem, it is helpful for a prospective foreign student who is gonna study in Glasgow in 3 months from now. Look forward to knowing British more from this channel, which must be able to raise my survival chance over there hahaha
Thank you so much. I moved to the UK for 6 years and lived in an English family. I am still sometimes confused about the cultural related issues. Your videos are very helpful for me to understand the English culture better. 🌺

《論語》:視其所以,觀其所由,察其所安,人焉廋哉?人焉廋哉? 原文釋義 (了解一個人)看他言行的動機,觀察他整個行動的經過,考察他安於什麼,這樣一個人怎麼能隱藏得了呢?一個人怎麼能隱藏得了呢? 英文翻譯 《Confucian Analects》:See what a man does, observe the roads he has followed, examine in what things he rests, how can a man conceal his real self ? How can a man conceal his real self?

Interesting. It's like 好 in 國語. or 賀 in 台語. It can mean a lot or nothing. It's just like "maybe yes, maybe no, maybe I don't know". Useful, in any culture.
Another example you raised regarding “accepting responsibility by saying it’s my fault” reflects one of many cultural differences between Chinese and English language. 說反話對大部份人來說是一種無法抗拒的智慧和能力。正所謂「聲東擊西」或「指桑罵槐」甚至「說出來不代表心裡想的」已經深深融入中文的博大精深之中。

People should throw away those stereotypes and let themselves live in the moment and sincerely interact with others, so that you can get the real connection and build a healthy and normal conversation. Language isn't like maths, every one can interpret a sentence in lots of different ways. It's always better just to get involved and figure out what they mean by yourself.

I believe that TONALITY determines the true meaning of what people really want to convey, either in a positive or negative way. We generally consider British as cold, indirect and distant but Susie might be an exception.

Agree with you. When the time you are trying to understand someone else, you need to also pay attention to their tone when the time they are saying it. It is common to ALL languages and countries, not only limited to UK. I think the problem for new English users is that when the time they are communicate with English users, they are too nervous and only focus on the words but missed the tone.
Thank you for your programs. I really enjoy them. I think most of these are rooted in being polite, well-mannered, and respectful. It is all about not putting others in a difficult position or embarrassing others. I think those are rather civilized way to interact with eachother in the global setting.

真是很好的解释!其实和英国人说话时还是不明白对方真实的意思。有没有可能英国人都比较随和,其实不用太在意他们怎么想?当他们说 that's interesting, 只是表明他在听你说。It's not bad 只是说他觉得可以,无所谓。It's my fault 就是说让它过去吧,怨就怨我吧。If you don't mind 就是说随便吧。

I work in London, when my colleagues say "interesting" they really meant it's boring. I guess is very important to read the context. thks for this video it's really helpful
But sometimes people do use "it's interesting" in a sarcastic way, especially in the office. I think after all it really depends on the tone

一开始用中文说 说到两分钟的时候就不自觉的切换回自己的母语了 哈哈哈哈 She started the video mainly in Mandarin, but at around the 2nd munite she gradually subliminally swiched the Mandarin mode off then turned full-on English😄😂
I don't know why I laughed so hard while watching this video. I think maybe it is because languages are confusing from time to time and I might have similar struggles before. Really enjoy your work. Thank you so much.
This video is interesting! Yep I also agree with you for most of the viewpoints. These rules can also apply to different languages. Finally, maybe next time I have to "emphasize" this video is "really interesting" LOL?
I’ve always been interested in this topic. And sometimes I feel it’s a bit difficult to understand British humour Thanks in advance!
I agree with you 100%. So, I hopefully feedback something positive to you. This kind of irony happens to Chinese. e.g. Someone asks Peter's feeling about Helen. If Peter replies that she is a kind girl. Many Chinese speakers think this reply implies Helen is ugly, or financially poor. That's not true cause , to me, I mean Helen has truly kind personal traits. That's it.🙌🙌🙌
Thank you for making this video! I've learnt quite a lot from it. I used to be a bit afraid of my professor, who is Taiwanese but got his PhD at Oxford. I guess I understand him better now!

There are so many memes circulating on the internet "translating" British wording to actual meaning and many of them are quite extreme and will make non-native speakers really confused and stressed when trying to interpret the meaning. It is nice to hear from you that British way of saying thing isn't as different as what they seem on face value.

Indirectness exists in any language. I suppose it all depends on the context and many other factors during a conversation. I teach Chinese language in school and I always try to tell students that the way we speak is not that different in Chinese. It is often the case that the person who teaches Chinese in an English school don't actually understand the English language very well... which means that they are going to suffocate themselves explaining intricate concepts of languages to the students. The ultimate result is that they tend to teach you the most straightforward way to speak a certain language. It is a rather sad story for many Chinese learners but hey, it is part of the learning curves.

My experience was, you really can't teach people about the tone of the language. It's something you pick up intuitively. Hence watch a lot of TV series will help you disperse a lot of myth about the language.

When I listen your speaking, I found out I staying in class listen to "English grammar", that is 70's in Hong Kong. Nice accent.
I found it so interesting(not fake) that in this video you have a malaysian accent, but in another video you have taiwan accent. That's like me learning English, easily affected by different accents.
