I'd use GenExpand sparingly to increase the foreground area of an image in which the subjects' feet are too close to the lower edge. I'd also use it to shift subjects from the centre of an image to the left or right third for a better composition.

Thanks for that Darlene, very informative. Yes, I think GenExpand could be useful when it comes to perspective distortion shooting buildings with a wide angle lens. Often once corrected they run out of the picture area and often more sky/foreground is required. However, it would be nice to have a working version of Neo, as I have had problems for months of it not loading and have been stuck with version 1.12.0! So sadly not been able to explore all the recent upgrades.

Most AI engines have a limit of 1024 x 1024. If your image is considerably higher in resolution, the results will likely be disappointing. Lowering the resolution of the image before using the AI tools will give you much better results.

For everyone, it is possible to download models of stable diffusion and run it locally, without the internet, if you are inclined to put the work in. Also, the 'generation' part takes longer when you do not have a rack of servers doing the heavy lifting for you. Fooocus (yes, 3 "o's" ) is not a trivial install, but it is not hard for the technical minded, either. It runs in a browser, but it is running on your computer, not the internet. The models tend to be large, and there is a learning curve. You can get good results if you take the time to learn.
@DigitalPhotoMentor

Yes but that isn't even photography anymore that's fully generated AI. I don't think most photographers are interested in that. I know I'm not. And what is fooocus? You lost me there

I use the Photoshop Gen tools and Remove Tool so I am not in a hurry to use Luminar's 3 tools. Yes, they should provide 3 or more versions. Luminar should also improve Erase Powerlines. It's not bad but it misses some and you have to use the plain erase to remove the missed wires. BTW, the Remove Tool in Photoshop can be used to extend straight lines to fix lines that have been cut by mistake.

The traditional Clone Tool in PS and Affinity does a much better job since there’s no sacrifice in resolution when cloning from area to another. If one wants to add something to the image that wasn’t there to begin with is a different need that belongs to the art of compositional artwork. Not photography.
@DigitalPhotoMentor
4 ай бұрын
Well that's a big discussion isn't it?
@freetibet1000
4 ай бұрын
@@DigitalPhotoMentor Thank you for your reply! Yes, it sure is a big discussion and I think the reason is that if we want to have an honest relationship with an audience then the audience needs to know what have been done to an image to achieve the result. If it’s just a matter of our own pleasure of making art I personally see no reasons for creating arbitrary limitations or categorisations in relation to our artwork. But I think the audience do have legitimate reasons for claiming transparency around how an image was produced. Also, for the art of photography to retain its unique status among all the different types of art we have I think we need to be transparent about what’s been done to a raw image to achieve the result. Im not a purist and I don’t believe that we have captured an objective section of reality just because we happened to use a camera as our tool to do it. Too many technical and mental factors take part to build an image at the time of capture to be regarded as an objective registration of reality. I think the difficult discussion revolves around how far can we allow our personal involvement to control the outcome before we can no longer believe it to be a photo any more? Most people today would probably regard Ansel Adams work as belonging to the category of photography despite the fact that many of his images underwent significant “manipulation” in his darkroom post process. So I do think there’s a level of flexibility in regards to artistic license within the realm of photography, in the minds of the audience. But I also believe the audience have a legitimate claim in being informed about the process that led up to the finished result as well. If that’s done in an honest way it is up to the audience to decide if they want to regard our work as photography, digital art, or something else. Transparency is the key word here, I think. As background information I like to point out that I have worked all my life as a free artist using a whole range of different approaches such as oil painting, classical woodblock printing, drawing, digital art and photography. Since the advent of the digital dimension it has become increasingly important to be very transparent about the techniques used in my relationship with the audience. I believe the audience have right to know if a photo have been significantly altered, and in what ways. Otherwise, the art of photography is quickly going to erode its reputation and uniqueness very quickly. At least in the eyes of an audience. If we only make art for our own pleasure sake, there’s no need for transparency or any declaration of intent and purposes. When it come to the Ai generative tools on the marked i see a great limitation in the low resolution it yields at the moment. My initial comment was about the superior results we can get from using the old Clone Tools since they are copying segments (with the same resolution) from one area of the image to another. I also work with digital restorations of old classical paintings for clients and the new Ai tools have been a great disappointment so far! Classical Clone and Texture tools are still far superior when we need to replace areas in a digital image. The secret in this type of work is to know how to separate colour information and texture to yield believable results. Another important aspect is to actually understand the subject matter we like to clone or replace, if a believable result is sought after. Right now, the resolution is too low and the results are mostly hit & miss guesswork from the generative Ai tools I’ve seen so far.

What is the largest image aize that Luminar can handle for these edits like GenExpand, Swap & Erase? Particularly Expand? I've heard Generative Fill in Photoshop maxes out at 1024x1024. I hope I'm wrong. But what's the largest size Luminar Neo can handle? I have an 8x12" @ 300dpi photo I want to fix with some form of Generative AI. It's an underwater photo of a humpback whale i took last summer that's mostly great, except when I framed the shot, i cut off the last couple feet probably of its tail fin. What i need to do is extend that side of the photo to get the back edge of the tail fin and a few extra feer of water to give the fin a little extra room in the picture. And it needs to be as sharp on the extended/expanded end as the rest of the image. And with no noticeable lines or edges running down that expanded side. Do you think that's something LN can do properly, or should i just wait for a new & improved version sometime in the future? Or is there a better option from another company?
@DigitalPhotoMentor
9 ай бұрын
That's correct it is a limitation of the technology though not the software running it. As long as you expand the edge little by little instead of in one large chunk your results should be better. I do find that depending on the new section you may need to blend the edge to make it smooth. I used the Clone tool to do that

@@DigitalPhotoMentorThanks for your reply and this video. I just saw the comment that someone posted a couple weeks ago along those same lines. If we can't enlarge much beyond that, then these hyped up features are pretty much useless to me. It's a major caveat, but one they don't want to address. Just like the fine print disclaimers in so many product ads and car dealership commercials: "....Taxes, licenses and fees may vary. Only valid every third month beginning with an R." Anyway, would upgrading my computer with more RAM & new GPU help any or not?
@DigitalPhotoMentor

@@MrX-zz2vk No upgrading won't help it's not a computer issue, it's the engine that runs the AI. So perhaps message Stable Diffusion and ask them. They are the ones that make the technology running it.

They can't let people have unlimited access to their servers without some kind of ongoing payment - too many people would abuse that. With the sales they've had lately you can get it for around $5/month which is half of what Adobe costs. So it's really quite reasonable.
