I still do! It’s easy and can be done year round, as the clothes dry via evaporation…not necessarily heat. It might take a bit longer to dry in humid conditions. Dryers are notoriously expensive to run and are hard on clothing fibers. There are retractable clothes lines…or set up a rack on your house. They’ll be dry in about 6-8 hours - or less in dry areas.

In the past year I have forgotten for most of a day to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer. At 68, it happens more and more to me and I just figure, oh well, the next phase of a very interesting life. Ride the ride and don't worry about the small things. I have a very important pill to take a half hour after breakfast each day for prostate issues and I finally had to put a little box on the white board on the fridge I use to count calories and sodium to check mark after I take my pill after forgetting whether I took it or not later in the day. Getting old...ee gads!

You just forgot to put your laundry reminder in front of the door. I don't think it's anything to worry about. My washer and dryer are outside in a shed, so the open shed door always reminds me I'm doing laundry. When I was a kid, my mom washed the clothes and hung them up outside in the back yard. It was fun to watch the sheets blowing in the air. I miss that now. I just bought some non-scented dryer sheets, and they have a strong smell to them too. Scares me to think what scented sheets smell like. Don't forget to leave your "doing laundry" reminded outside the door and you and Jim take care.

Hi Maria, thanks for sharing that fun memory. It’s one that a lot of us can relate to. 😄 as for those dryer sheets, I just told Jim about the unscented sheets and he says that’s what he usually buys! I miss drying my clothes outside. Nothing feels better than getting in bed with clean sheets that have been dried outside. We used to use a (whirley) which was a circular drying line that was attached to a pole. It would move around in the wind and you can hang your undies in the inside then the bigger stuff on the outside to hide them. Not sure what their official name is though. I think they are called rotary dryers. When not in use you can fold them down so they don’t take up space. I often forget about the clothes in the washer. I think everyone has done that. 😂 I don't know if it's a senior moment. 😳 My most frequent thing is going into another room and being like; why did I come in here? Sometimes I can finally remember. Sometimes I go back where I started and I remember. Other times... nothing. 😂 What were we talking about Steve 🤔 💭 😂

I was forgetting laundry before I became a senior. Have you considered putting a drying rack in the garage?

Hi Mary, I had a dryer rack that I tried putting outside, but the wind kept blowing it over. I then tried to put it in the garage, but we just don’t have any room in our garage. 🙁

I don't have a dryer here in the high desert. If there is a slight breeze I hang my clothes up and take them down 15 minutes later (thick towels a little longer). With so few loads try a temporary laundry line. One hook end is secured and the other hook end takes an adjustable knot end. When finished remove the adjustable end to hang back on the other hook. I have forgotten about the wash a few times (my washer is on the back porch enclosed in a closet). My old style machine like yours has a "fast wash" cycle which I'm assuming they provide for us old timers (or just run it through another rinse cycle). 😉 I too wanted the old style washer and GE still made one ten years ago. Note: plastic close-line clips don't last long in the desert outside. And the old style strong wooden pins are hard to find. Walmart, etc., sells the poorly made cheaper wood clips that come apart. I'm on the lookout for the old time wooden clips.

Hi ER, that’s awesome that you are able to hang your clothes out to dry in the wind. I’m determined to figure out some thing. I do have the old-fashioned wooden clips. I think I bought them at Walmart about 15 years ago. I’m sure if I bought them today they would be cheaply made like everything else. 🙁

I would LOVE to still have functioning "old school" machines. The new machines look fancy, and certainly cost a lot, but just aren't built to last.

Younger, my grandma would put me on the washing machine when it start to shake too much. Maybe it was a senior moment or just a practical moment for her. Thinking of it, I am surprised that I didn't complain while on the washing machine. I am the kind of person that does not like to be shaken. I guess I took it as my first experience on a merry-go-round. (-:

lol thanks for sharing that fun memory with us Annik! That was actually very common back in the day. I think I took a few rides myself on a shaking washing machine when I was a kid, lol! 😂👍

Steve, I’ve done that several times too. No cause for concern! There is one ritual that I always do before going to bed, though, and that is do the dishes so that all is clean for the morning. When it’s just a few plates and glasses I do them by hand, dishwasher is only used for larger meals when friends are over. Have a great day!

Hi Foster, thanks for sharing that. We are the same as you. We always make sure all the dishes are washed before we go to bed. I think we got in the habit because years ago we lived in a place that had lots of ants and if any food or dirty dishes were left out we woke up the next day to an overnight ant party! 😳😲😂

I forget sometimes too, I had washer and dryer like yours, the top load washers wash clothes way better than these front loaders, I’m wishing I had my older set, hang unto yours those last forever

Try a collapsible drying rack. No unsightly lines to stretch. Wen done it folds up out of the way.

Maybe one of those small folding things, but use binder clips instead of clothes pins. Plastic ones though, metal will mark up your clothes. Although the wind there may be able to blow the whole thing over.

Hang onto that older washer as long as you can. The newer ones are a nightmare. I had to replace my 30-year-old washer a few years ago. I call the new washer "Jason" from the horror film character. I swear it is possessed! It was professionally installed and properly balanced, but it is constantly going off balance and the tub bangs against the sides of the washer. The old washer had a braking system that would stop the spinning tub in a few seconds when you would open the lid. You could easily rearrange an off-balanced load and start the spin cycle again by just closing the lid. Not the new ones. The lid is locked and can't be opened until you press a "cancel" button, then you must wait until the tub gradually slows down to a complete stop on its own. No built-in braking system. Meanwhile, the off-balance tub keeps banging away. I have to be super careful to load the laundry into the tub very precisely and never do a very large load to avoid having the load go off balance or "Jason" will start banging away. Treasure that old washer.

Thanks for the laugh BC, but sorry to hear that you are living with a demon washer! 😳😲😂 thanks so much for the heads up. You are about the 10th person who’s left a similar comment about this. I had no idea. I was hoping we could get a new washer and dryer soon but now that’s the last thing I wanna do. 😲

@theretiredlifewithsteve My "Jason" is a top-loader. The front-loaders are not much better. My sister has a front-loader washer and we have named it "Jason Jr." 😬
