@@NaatClark I'm sorry, but the amount of flack teachers unions get whenever they strike for better working conditions, supply budgets, smaller class sizes (so kids get more one-on-one time with the teacher), etc., tells me that, no, most "loyal fans" would not be so happy so see their team throw part of the season away over some bad calls. People will be pissed. Ticket holders will want refunds (particularly if they had to travel from out of town and needed transportation and overnight accommodations), the owners will be pissed about losing those ticket sales, advertisers will be pissed that the advertising spots they purchased and paid money to produce aren't being seen by the people at the game (since there's no game for them to be at) and they're going to want some sort of compensation (which the owners will, again, not be happy with). Advertisers aren't paying for "exposure" in the form of news stories about how the team has forfeited yet again as a means of protest. They pay for exposure in the form of bringing fans into the stadium or by getting them to watch the TV broadcast. And again, all for what, some bad calls? I could see some major protesting if this were the deciding factor in the final game of one of the playoff rounds, and determined whether the one team went home, or moved onto the next round (or won the World Series), but short of that, no. The good that may possibly come from it would not outweigh the potential negatives.

@@bubkusjones Teachers ain't baseball players and the two ain't really comparable. A single forfeit is not anything like an actual strike my dude. Also just because there's no ball game doesn't mean the channel broadcasting it goes off the air. Advertisers pay for people to see their ads. If this happened I can promise you a lot of folks would be tuning in to find out wtf is going on than would be otherwise. Besides any form of strike or work stoppage or protest is by design meant to inconvenience as many folks as possible, the exposure is sorta the point.
@bubkusjones

@@NaatClark They weren't talking about a single forfeit, though. They specifically said "refuse to play another game" till they got their desired result. What else is that but a strike? And no, baseball players and teachers aren't comparable. Teachers actually serve a purpose, baseball players just play a kids game for millions of dollars. And no, the channel doesn't go off the air. They DO, however, have to find alternative broadcasting for the time slot the games were meant to be played. Which means the advertisers who were expecting the game to happen aren't going to be getting what they paid for. Yeah, exposure is the point, but it's to get people onto your side, so that they pressure the other parties involved on your behalf. Telling people "Yeah, there's not going to be any games till they undo this bad call they made. Sorry you booked hotel rooms and plane/train tickets to come see us on your limited vacation time, better luck next time" isn't going to help with that.

@@JayD73the rule is a bit stupid because there isn't really a direct path to the base for right handed batters, so they'll always take the most direct route to first and occasionally get called out for doing so when stuff like this happens. Rather than simply allowing runners to take whatever path is fastest and simply not calling interference on them so long as they don't diverge from this path, you get situations like this where the ump is supposed to make a judgement call. Players are actually taught to intentionally throw the ball at the runner to abuse this rule. It's kind of stupid. But whenever discussion about this pops up, you get people insisting that the stuff they learned in their preschool league is totally applicable and exactly what professional players should be doing.

I agree it should be reviewable but I want to point out that this play happened because the Nationals catcher made a bad throw. He needs to take two steps to his own left just like he would on a bunt play ot a dropped third strike, and lead the throw to the outside of the first baseman so that exactly this situation can't happen. Instead he makes a rushed throw to the inside of the first baseman and hits the runner. And let's be clear, this throw hit the runner before it hit the defender's glove. I'm not convinced that the first baseman ever had a play on that throw, which is IMHO why the runner was safe. I'd score that play an E2.

Impossible rule to follow for right hand batters who are already taken out of the white lines after they swing. Runner always gets the base path, and is automatically safe when there’s contact. While the base path is invisible and a judgement call, the umpire will usually call a runner out when he breaks away from the linear path he was initially running. Rule needs to be changed to allow a linear path (straight line) to 1st from the position the batter was in after he makes contact with the ball.

I thought the rule was the hitter can establish their "own" baseline run, that the lines are a guide but not specifically needed to be run in, there have been plays recently where runners go on the grass specifically to get in the way of the throw to home or 1st, but since they are running in a straight line right at the base it is decided (often) that they did not interfere so long as they don't "dip" into the ball.
@rothweiler
Жыл бұрын
The last 45' to first is different from every other baseline. IF the runner is outside the marked cutout AND interferes with the catch, it is interference and he shall be declared out. There's a problem with the second play though, he's already touched first when the ball hits him. A runner already safe can't interfere with the attempt to put him out - too late for interference to happen on that play.
@bobbygetsbanned6049

@@rothweiler Exactly, Trea was safe by a mile on the second one so it was obviously a terrible call. With that type of call a catcher could throw the ball at the runner after he clearly sees he's safe just to draw the interference call, it was a terrible call and I'm not a Trea or Nats fan.

The player does NOT have to run on the outside of the field of play. That is wrong. They are legally allowed at ALL levels to run directly on the line and to a degree reasonable beside the line. Inside or outside. It is ONLY when the player makes the attempt to change direction to deflect or interfere with the play that they can be called out. The player has EVERY right to run in the basepath. None of these runners in this video should have been out. This is just proof the rules changes and flip flopping on rulings has caused confusion among the umpires. This almost never happened 30 years ago.

@joedirty7176 I have been an umpire for 20 years, played baseball for 16. I assure you I understand the rules of baseball far better than most. New changes in understanding have created these ambiguous "judgment calls" that are not in line with the rules of the game. Remember that the right hander under your perceived rules would be at a disadvantage b3cause he would be forced to run across home plate, thru the left hand batters box to enter the supposed basepath outside the field of play. The natural path is from the inside corner of the batters box towards the base. All runners in this video are legally safe under decades of rules and basic baseball knowledge.
@chrismcallister3495
Жыл бұрын
@joedirty7176 funny how people always assume you make up credentials. The base path is VERY clear to people with a brain. Deliberately running inside to create a harder throw is the spirit of the rule as every umpire knows. Close to the line is NEVER called out at any level and has never been applied in MLB history the way its being applied today. I've watched baseball for al.ost 40 years, played, coached and umpired... its NEVER been an issue like it is today. Most people commenting on this stuff only think they know anything bc they watch clips on tiktok or whatever. One foot inside the line is still reasonable position for the runner as the base is on the line. As I have said numerous times, forcing the player to run in foul territory and then make a sudden move to the bag is not the spirit of the rule and it promotes the motion that umpires will trigger interference because they move towards the play and the ball strikes them they are interfering. If the player remains in a reasonable line of the base path consistently making no effort to disrupt the play, the contact with the ball is counted as a unfortunate error on the throw and NOT interference. It's only when an unacceptable amount of space is taken by the runner in an attempt to make the play harder for the fielder does interference come into play.
@chrismcallister3495
Жыл бұрын
@joedirty7176 the problem you have is you are taking the most aggregious point of the run and applying that position to the point of contact. But you can clearly see when the ball strikes the player. He is on the line and in no way in a position to interfere with the play. The player has every right to be there and the catcher must make a better throw. The other 2 examples of interference are straight garbage and the umpires should have been fined for such a horrendous call of out. Again. None of these plays warrant interference calls at all and all the players should be called safe.
