Yes, there was a HUGE difference in "Downtowns" from when this song came out and into perhaps the 70's. By 14 I was hanging out all night in downtown Seattle. Petula Clark is a British icon, she began her singing career during WW2, she was also a child film actress too. She had hits in French, German, Italian and Spanish as well as English, a true continental performer. She has always looked glamourous and is 88 years old now and still singing. I get what you're saying about 'Downtown' but I find it an uplifting song, I think in this TV performance her acting instincts are kicking in, she knows it's tight shot and wrapping up her raincoat is just something to do, imagining a cold or wet evening downtown, but still enjoying the thrill. A more darker urban song is another big hit of hers that I'd recommend, 'Don't sleep in the subway', but even that is a song of hope and reconciliation.

Thanks for reacting to perhaps my favourite song of the early 1960s! I'd suggest don't read too much into the video, or the use of "downtown". British writer and producer Tony Hatch, who also wrote loads of other hits and film and TV and soap themes (UK and Oz viewers will be familiar with Emmerdale, Crossroads and Neighbours...!) wrote it during his first visit to NYC. The bright neon lights and upbeat vibrancy of Broadway and Times Square (which he mistakenly assumed was "downtown", as it would have been seen as in the UK) made a huge impression on him. It was intended to be upbeat, an answer to loneliness in the city "...you'll be dancing with 'em too before the night is over, happy again..." - and that was indeed how it was received at the time. I was 6 when it was released, and it was my favourite song then! It is still one of my favourites, and still sends tingles down my spine, even now - love it! IIRC, Tony hatch wanted the band to sound more like a rock band, to appeal to young people, and in a bit of Trivia, I believe one of the session musicians was a certain Mr Jimmy Page.... IIRC, from when I looked it up years ago, it was the first US #1 for many years, and the first ever US gold record, by a British female artiste?

My wife and I had front row seats and I was thrilled to be that close to the stage. At the end of the show she took all of her bows and then came right up to me and shook my hand! A quick note....she lived in France and Charlie Chaplin ( old by then ) was her neighbor. She would visit him quite often. Brilliant to hear a massive orchestra as a backing. This record is pure class. The recording technology then was basic to say the least. When this song was popular downtowns across the country were thriving-now most are ghosttowns and thruways to other destinations. Eerie vibe-heavens no. Downtowns were a lot different and safer than they are now-it was always a happy place-not so much anymore in most areas with crime, the homeless and drug addicts..Today's youth really missed out on what it was like in the golden days.

Hi RogueRxyce, I've always loved this song because I grew up in a city!!! But she's singing about a different day & time (back in the day)...Because unfortunately today (not all) but many "Downtowns" around the country are run-down, with many vacant buildings, sadly & dangerously unsafe and crime infested...Nevertheless, we can still say that "Downtown" is where all of the "action" takes place...I appreciate your reaction and please say hello to your Sister...Peace & Blessings!!!

Great reaction. A wonderful upbeat song about cities. Brings to mind other positive songs like On Broadway, Hot Time Summer in the City, and of course Frank Sinatra's version of New York, New York. For funky irony there is Stevie Wonder, Living For The City.
This isn't eerie or dark, this is all about lifting your spirits. It is saying don't be alone when you are lonely or feeling low, go where there is safety and people you can meet and maybe you can find someone who understands. At least that's what I have always got from it.

Petula Clark Petula Clark (born November 15th, 1932 in Epsom, England) was an Singer-Songwriter who was best known for her career spanning more than seven decades & recording more than 1000 songs. Petula died on January 20th, 2023 (TBV) & her death was possibly because of her failing health. She was 90. 1965 “Downtown,” written by Tony Hatch, was released in late 1964 & ascended to No. 1 in the U.S.A. for two weeks in January 1965. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.

Her song Dont Sleep In The Subway is another of her famous hit songs about city life. Kinda sad that song. Ultimately it’s a love song though.

Love your comments and reactions! I think you'd love Laura Nyro, she was a singer songwriter who wrote and performed some great tunes. I'd start with "Eli's Coming".

No there is nothing dark about this song at all. Here closing her jacket up was just a movement she did with her collar, she wasn't expressing fear. If anything, maybe it was chilly on that stage! Lol! You should listen to her song "I KNOW A PLACE" You can see Petula Clark in the movie musicals "FINIAN"S RAINBOW" starring Petula, Fred Astaire and Tommy Steele, and also "GOODYBYE MR. CHIPS" starring Petula, with PETER O'TOOLE. They are BOTH wonderful movies. With "Goodbye Mr. Chips," If you want to watch it, make sure you get the MUSICAL version with Peter O'Toole (as Mr. Chips) from 1969, NOT the original movie from 1939, that one is not a musical version.

There isn't a dark meaning to the song. it is totally upbeat about going to downtown to escape you troubles and discovering something new. Your comment about her covering up is, just because she is wearing a trenchcoat during the performance. She is only acting as if she is visiting downtown during a rainy evening.

Not seeing any dark side. "Downtown" was where everything happened in the 1960s. I remember my mom taking me on the bus to shop downtown for Christmas, then riding the bus back home. That's where the movie theatres were, and the shops. Life in the city was very different from now. No suburban malls, no strip malls, no cineplexes. If you wanted shopping or entertainment, you went downtown. It's that simple. Nothing nefarious.

I used to walk around the house "singing" this song at the top of my voice when I was about 3 or 4 years old. I only knew one word of the lyrics... DOWNTOWN.

Very nice reaction. "Downtown" was a massive international hit - literally a hit on six continents. It became Petula Clark's signature song, though she had many hits in various countries before and afterward. For American audiences, though, this was the song that put her on the map, while she was already a successful recording artist in her native U.K. and across Europe (especially France, where she enjoyed remarkable chart success). Petula has an extensive discography, well worth seeking out - and not just for the hits. The album tracks are often every bit as good as the single releases, and quite a few of her album selections she wrote or co-wrote. She continues to perform and record, into her late 80s.
