You wipe the hook or knitting needle off. I use a cotton rag. I assume it’s probably caused by the oils on our hands cause it’s not absorbed unlike a bamboo hook or needle which gains a patina over time.

I've found lanolin or lotion to work well. Lanolin is fragrance free and washes out nice. It's one of the big reasons I don't like using Bernat Blanket yarn and plastic hooks. I find I have to use more force to get the yarn to move and relax in the stitch. The lanolin helps and using aluminum hooks. My biggest first world wish would be aluminum hooks with longer necks in the bigger sizes. Can't find them bigger than 6.5mm which is really frustrating. Thanks Mikie, these little idea videos are a great and super helpful.

Its the glycerin in the soap. So if you make your own soap, a tiny dab of the glycerin. I've also heard gulf wax, the kind you find in the Jello/pudding section in the grocery store. Its a soy based wax. I know a person who would spray cooking spray on her knitting needles.

Please don’t get mad at me about this suggestion. Over fifty years ago I was learning to crochet. I have done other crafts but always come back to crochet. Sorry brief preface. No one in my family crocheted so I was learning from the green 25 cent Learn how to book. I was at the doctor’s office and this kindly elderly lady helped me with many thing I was doing wrong. I had a burr that kept catching on an old Boye hook. It was the 1960’s, so I don’t remember a variety of hooks. She told me an old way to lubricate the hooks was to gently rub it in your hair. The natural oil in your hair works as a lubricant. You may think that sound gross but how often do you touch your hair and not wash it during the day. She said this was from the 1800s as a solution. It does work as a quick fix. I have not done it in awhile. Hooks are so much better now.
