For those people who have insurance coverage, there are very specific criteria for a patient that an insurance company would consider eligible for bariatric surgery.
That's generally a patient with a body mass index, or BMI, greater than 40 kilograms per meter square, or a patient with a BMI of 35 to 39.9 kilograms per meter square if they have other medical conditions that fit the insurance companies guidelines to cover your bariatric surgery.
For the patients who have comorbid conditions like diabetes or hypertension or fatty liver disease, and their BMI is hanging around 31-32, they may consider a sleeve gastrectomy in order to get themselves down to a safer BMI in the mid-twenties, in order to keep that weight off a reverse in these medical conditions and live a longer life. While insurance companies haven't begun to cover you at these lower BMI levels they will cover you generally with BMI over 40 and as low as 35 with other medical conditions.
