I love the tajima line of tape measures. I have the gold 7.5m one. I am a carpenter, and they are great on the belt as they come with a clip that attaches to your toolbelt. It lets you clip it in and out kinda like a seatbelt and never falls out. I got sick of dropping tapes and damaging them. My second favourite was the stanley fatmax which I found was very durable here in New Zealand where it can be quite wet and can be sandy I could get 6 months out of it.

I use the Hultafors tape measure (Swedish?). Only metric. Not cheap, but very exact and sturdy. I especially like the inner measurements feature, very exact, and it is not through a window on top but a a metal strip that you unfold and accounts exactly for the width of the tape measure casing. I’m very happy with it. I came up to it on a video on Peter Millard’s channel.

@@sedgetool Hey Sedge!, always eager to watch another of your excellent and to the point videos. 👍👌 Actually the model with this feature is the Hultafors Talmeter. I own the 3 meter one. It has also some nice extra features, like a hole in the unfoldable metal strip in order to draw arcs or circles; with the scale on the underside of the tape you can measure diameters, of tubing etc.; at the beginning of the tape there is a “sharp” triangular lip that you can use as a marker or some sort of marking knife/marking gauge; AND it is reparable, spare parte are available.

My favorite is the fast cap as well. I like all the same things that you mentioned. Since I own the LR32 system now I like those diamonds at the 32 increments. And I like that it’s both imperial and metric since I am venturing out and making the jump from imperial to metric. I did just finish watching your older video on cabinets. I really liked the tape measure you used in it while measuring the inside of the cabinet. I think it was festool. Definitely want to look more into that.

I have the Fastcap 12 footer. For many years. For all the reasons you stated. As an aside a few years ago I went to Fastcap (I live about a 40 minutes drive away) to see if they could tell me how to replace the end hook that I had accidentally ripped off (don't ask). They simply handed me a brand new one. I told them it was my fault, not the tape. They insisted. Good company to do business with.

Thanks for the overview; I have several of the same tape measures. My go to for a while was the 16 foot Fastcap metric/standard measurement. Fits the bill most of the time. A couple of years ago I saw Rob Cosman using a 5.0 meter/16 foot Tajima and that has become my go to tape. It’s a little smaller/lighter than the Fastcap; is both metric and imperial, nice quality tape, easy to read and has a nice locking lever. I have a number of DeWalt 9’ tapes scattered around the shop (at the table saw, at the Kapex miter, etc for quick access. Also the one I carry to the lumber yard; however it is only imperial. I use a Fastcap lefty. I know you weren’t doing a quality test, but try pulling the different brands to 12 feet or so, and see if they measure the same. When I do trim work with someone else, we check our tapes for the same measurement at near max length before making any cuts. Different brands can vary more than you think.

The Klein Tool 25' magnetic end tap measure. As an electrician, best magnet on the planet. Can pick up just about any tool/piece of material that I drop while running my conduit 😂 edges don't break and it doesn't have that "six inches of extra protection" crap at the beginning of your tape that always seems to be the first thing to break. For outdoor construction jobs I like the 8 meter, wide bladed, rubber armoured Stanleys with a dual metric/imperial scale. Many of my friends use the 8m Fisco tape because it has class 1 accuracy rather than the Stanley's class 2. For precise indoor work and cabinetry I really like the 5 meter Bahco tapes...they have black on silver scales, which I find easier to read than black on yellow (important as you get older and your eyesight deteriorates!). Also they have a vertical metric scale on the back of the blade which comes in very handy. Another favourite is the Festool/BMI 3 meter tape with internal measuring and circle drawing functions...that really is a handy pocket sized tool.

I refuse to use my wife's monster DeWalt 25' tape measure. Love the yellow one as it's set up for cabinet making. Beside the built in pencil sharpener is great for sharpening all those color pencil's my wife gets for her Sunday school class. Just lock the tape measure in the vice, chuck the pencil in my drill and Wha La', sharp pencils.

Currently on the job I have a husky 25 footer. Nothing special but, it works. Currently my pouch is clip oriented that is why I can not use any fastcap I own. Their clip design is by far the most god awful thing I have ever used. It does nothing but detach. I have a couple and want to use them but, can't. Not even to go to the lumberyard because they detach from a pocket easily too. I have the Hultafors Talmeter for metric ( recommended by Extreme woodworker) use for when I make myself the new version of the Paulk Total station. The fact that its in metric has been the reason I have not touched the project yet. In short I check my tapes on a woodpeckers ruler and use what is available at the time. If I'm working with someone I check tapes to be sure we are in sync . If the measurements are off there's usually only one place to place blame. The mirror.
