The dogs name is important my ex wife got rid of my dog saying it was a stray and the new family that adopted her took her back to the shelter because she didnt listen to them. So when I got her back and used her real name she instantly knew who I was and knew she was going home.

You're exactly right. Zak George is one of the worst offenders. Every one of his videos starts with a two minute advertisement for some stupid dog food and his book. He spends 10% of the video on what is actually in the title of the video, and the rest are just tips he already used in other videos, followed by asking us to like, comment, subscribe, follow him on social media, pay him on Patreon and basically everything short of giving him our Social Security numbers. Simpawtico Dog Training is almost completely different. Yes, he does do the like, comment, subscribe beg, but his videos are wholly focused on the subject in the title and not as a cash grab sponsorship, merchandise ad or Patreon beg.

I gave all my new husky pups names, one came naturally, catch phrase for liter was “ that must Bootsy”, the one always either crying or upset. Then she completed her name with a display of kicking feet just 2 weeks old. Then Shamrock was named for her markings, as Bootsy. The dad’s puppy has a name for the only male in the litter, JJ after his dad Jerry. Bootsy’s mom has another name for her, Kamik which means Eskimo Boots, and they have been very happy to hear all news. Dogs have many names, some they may keep to themselves.

I finally figured this out with a German Pinscher puppy I rescued. He was the smartest dog I'd ever had and ended up learning his name day one! He also learned how to open his crate, how to open doors, and how to get out of our fenced in yard no matter what we did to keep him in. However, I always knew when he was out and would stand out front and call his name as excitedly as I possibly could and he would immediately stop what he was doing and run at top speed to me and jump into my arms because that was the only way I ever called him and I'd play with him (he couldn't care less about food if play was an option) as soon as he reaches me. I even trusted him enough to let him go again to bring my brothers timid new dog back when the gate had been left open because I knew he'd come right back when I called and that she would run away if I tried to go near her. He was only 4 or 5 months old at that point and he knew his name so well!

Their first year of life they were not socialized or trained. When I got them they were barkers and learned that when I say Shhh it means stop barking. If I don't say each of their names before saying Shhh it won't work. But I do praise them for following the command.

Because I don't take my pups out the front door without their leash, they don't bolt out the door. However, if they did, I'd just shout "huhu" (like being punched in the gut twice) snap my finger and they are back in. I only use their name when I want them to singularly pay attention. Such as when I give them a treat, I hold the treat up to their nose and they have to wait till i say, "[Dogs name] take it." Or when they eat, they have to sit calmly and "say please" before they can eat. All this together has kept them easy to keep dogs and I love them! Couldn't imagine life without them. On the other hand, when they get too rowdy, I will use their full name with a deep tone rather a happy tone. As the narrator stated, this helps the dog differentiate between a good name calling and when the dog needs to pay attention.

Thank you so much for this! I have grown up with dogs all my life, and helped to train many dogs. I have an older rescue, we trained to the 9. He was so easy and responded perfectly to our positive and negative cues, plus he was older and low energy. He is now the best dog. We just adopted a lab/Doberman mix. She is 1.5 years old, and is a power house combined with a puppies energy. She knows, nothing! And doesn't respond to "no" or negative cues. Just found out you shouldn't use "no" with rescues, so I am stopping that now, and using just a SHH noise with ahhh. Its day five today, and she came to us, and doesn't respond to her given name. So setting boundaries with her in the maelstrom of trying to teach her, her name while showing her house rules has made her a handful. Trying to burn her out with exercise, hasn't helped yet. I know its day 5 so she hasn't settled yet. She loves training. It's the only time she isn't hopping and bounding around the house. Thanks again for the name info, this helped me realize to never use her name negatively! :)

Great video. I see a lot of beginners m this error at the dog school I train. Must admit I do sometimes as well. Humans are hardwired to address someone by their name. Also the command for "come here" is often destroyed as people repeat it over and over again. I taught my dog a "secret word". Only my wife and I know what it is. When we say that word, Guus vind right away as he knows he gets a super reward (roast beef etc).

literally was doing 1 and 2 with our husky we got from the pound. No wonder he has a hard time. Will put all 3 to good use! So helpful.

I've always been bad with this. So I actually worked around it by having a "naughty name" that I trained for them to go lie down in a certain spot. Their full names are always positive, but their nickname, usually shortened, I can get my frustration out with. It's been very helpful.

Omg this video is so helpful as I have been experiencing these issues (ignoring me when I ask him to come) for a very long time. Thank you so much for the tips! I have no idea that keep calling his names on everything will have a negative impact. You definitely deserve more subscribers!!

Thanks! One of these days I had a situation where this video comes very handy. I was walking off the leash, when a skater passed by and my dog got scared and run. Needless to say she was deaf... On the bright side I found out she knows her way home. But time to train her to be responsive to me shouting! As always, great video.

This stuff all works common sense that makes perfect sense. My problem with training is a large family. Each person interacts in there own way. If I’m away for the weekend come Monday I will need to start over.

For sure, I hear you. Getting human compliance is the hardest part and usually where the biggest breakdowns are.

This was exactly what I needed. I have an incredibly smart, very good Border Collie/Whippet mix...and I have noticed over the last few months his recall is getting weaker and weaker when we are out hiking in the woods. I ABSOLUTELY am sure it is the over use of his name, in a negative way. Re-training myself begins immediately!! Thanks so much...you have a new subscriber.

Not trying to brag - i am just so happy that i have found a channel that has so much cool stuff i can take with me on my journey.. The coding system is incredible Would love to see more about that.. I have a 1 and a half year old Bloodhound. She does great on the leash with training. I have started training with her off leash in the yard so that she understands she has to listen off leash too. Such a stubborn bread. It is really hard for me not use her name as a reprimand. I will have to try and find a phrase that I can say naturally as her reprimand and start giving high reward treats for coming when my voice is raised. Thanks for the video your a god send.

I too am guilty of using my dogs name in association with a correction and overusing my dogs name. She "used" to have excellent recall, now I know how to get back to that, thanks :)

I thumbed up the video because I liked how you presented everything. It should be common sense, but unfortunately many people need to be told. I really liked your "just stop nagging" comment
