My wife and i have trained Human Scent Discrimination blood hounds for over 30 years and the last 8 we have trained beagles under the same profile. Hard surface tracking or trailing is is hard as the handlers perception of the task that is given to the dog. One of the down town trails my 13 inch Beagle has done, 24 hours old, summer time, about 25c, dry, about 2km long. My Beagle hit every store the trail layer went into, confirmed by the trail layer, even went down the same side of the roads on the gps recorded trail. My wife and i have done hard surface training in huge crowds of people upwards of 50,000+, multiple targets, the funnest ones are getting the target to back track right past you and watching the Bloodhound clue in, the body language will make you laugh. training Bloodhounds for over 3 decades doing a 2 split is basic and should be started as soon as the dog nails the single, you should never train your dog to jump on the target, train for active alert, a bark or sit what ever the handler likes, me I prefer training for a silent alert/ ie only the handler knows the body language when the correct id is made, In my opinion the silent alert is the best. I can't tell you how many times our Bloodhound has pulled us threw 10's of thousands of people right to people we have trained with. Its so cool watching your Bloodhound go from just a night out walking at an event like the fourth or first of July, to that full body language change that pulls you threw literally 50,000+ people right to their friends just to say Hi i remember you. I would have to check the records but i almost certain the oldest successful recorded urban (hard surface) trail my Bloodhound ran was around 36 hours old, could have been 48hours old , its been so long and the stack of recorded files is a few feet high from our tailing days.

Some Bloodhound fun facts. The FBI studied the Bloodhound back in the 1980's for 8 years. The FBI train their Bloodhounds for 5 years before they are used in the field, even then the agents are not told if it is a real gig or not and the Bloodhound gets three kicks at the can to pass for the best of the best to be used to track serial killers. Bloodhounds were proven to have the ability to be able to scent discriminate 1 particle out of a trillion. Bloodhounds were proven to be able to pick up scent off of incendiary devices even with the bomb maker gloved up. Bloodhounds were shown to be able to pick up scent from handled bullets that were fired from a gun then used as scent articles that were used to ID the person in a line up of people. The FBI Bloodhound programs are kept out of the courts and the media.

The Bloodhound is the oldest and one of the last of the Ancient breed of dog that is still walking the earth. The Bloodhound has been used by Royalty for thousands of years to track tax evaders to poachers. All of your working breeds can have their lines traced back to being bread to a Bloodhound, simply for their drive. The slang Blood in front of hound was from the fact that only Royal blood could have them.

You know you are getting close when they poison your Dogs My wife and i have trained Bloodhounds for Human Scent Discrimination for over 30 years. Our last bloodhound AU, her oldest recorded successful trail about 10km/ 6 miles long. Au's Oldest recorded successful trail almost 10 days old. We have had successful trained Bloodhound scenarios with targets leaving scenes going to a bus stop riding the bus for about a mile and then getting off the bus and walking about 1/2 mile that were documented successful trails. About 20 years ago my wife and i had the first RCMP validated SAR Bloodhound in British Columbia Canada, his name was Marley, Marley was poisoned right in our backyard (Victoria BC), Marley survived and past about 18 months later from an aggressive form of nose cancer. The very next night after Marley was poisoned i saw a man hanging out by the corner of our house at the trail that leads to the park beside the house, I walked out to him and told him the about our Bloodhound that had been poisoned the night before, the man standing with a baseball cap, old school FBI style sunglasses, hoodie, the whole nine yards. He just stood their and told me anyone that trains their dog for human scent, should train them not to eat raw meat from a strangers hand. One of my thoughts was,I am sure glad my wife was not interviewing the guy that poisoned her dog. About 20 years ago my wife and i were both given the opportunity to train Bloodhounds with the FBI, they have an extensive training program that uses Bloodhounds for tracking Serial killers. FBI Bloodhound fun fact, Farthest recorded successful air scent about 6 miles from the target. The best of the best Bloodhound fun facts, you can train Bloodhound for drop trailing, get a direction of trail, throw the Bloodhound in the car, pull the dog out at intersection, no matter country or interstate intersection get a direction of travel, rinse and repeat, the Farthest recorded successful Drop trail is over 300 miles long(from a child abduction case). Training Bloodhounds with the FBI, high light of my life.

I am rereading the Virginia Laniers series about Jo Beth Siddons and her Bloodhound business in Georgia. They are really good action books, 6 in the series. I thought there were only 5 so finding one more long after they were written is like Christmas and BIrthday all together. The books can be hard to find tho so I am reading the last one, A Bloodhound to Die For on OpenLibrary.org. also a terrific thing,. free too.

Bloodhounds were trained for thousands of years to work independently of humans. All of my Bloodhounds have been trained and trusted to walk off leash. They are one of the most Loyal Breed of Dog in existence and are not a Breed for a Novice Dog handler. My dogs are always walked on a leash now a days, I have had many dogs poisoned on and off trail. Dog haters, especially the ones that target Human scent dogs place poison cookies/ meat chunks, etc just a few meters off of the paths that lead threw park forests and will even poison your scent dogs right in your back yard and specifically target the dogs that are let off leash and aloud to run threw the forests.

It is not fully proven whether its English, Belgian or the st Hubert’s, in England its considered English. The fci (Belgium based) accepted Belgium’s claim but there isn’t a way to prove either way as there aren’t any original st Hubert’s to compare and the modern bloodhounds aren’t exactly identical to them.

We have a female. Don't get this breed if you want a life. They are demanding and make huge messes wherever they go. Our dog loves rain and is great at making mud puddles all over the backyard. We sweep and mop every day and keep a drool towel in every room to wipe up the goo that she slings around as she shakes her head. She eats half my breakfast each morning and sits in my recliner and drinks beer (just kidding about the beer).

I've had Rottweilers, Collie's, German Shepherd, Bird Dogs, Settlers, the Bloodhound is a very loving and loyal member of the family. They are clowns and will crack you up. I now have a Redbone Bloodhound that I absolutely adore! They can be trained to do anything once you establish you're the dominant, but it takes alot of patience and work! I plan on getting another soon and then another. I love this breed! Best to get a puppy and start training at 2 months.
