This is exactly how it went for me five years in and I came in with the wrestling background and now I’m primarily a half guard guy with a pretty decent wrestle up

100% agree. Much safer doing this way. BJJ sessions for guard, Wrestling/Judo for wrestling. Ultimately your health is in your hands.

Im not sparring with beginners on the feet. Been grappling for years, including wrestling and Judo, still not doing throws and takedowns with newbies. Dont care. Grown adult here and my knees are way more important to me than any of our egos lol

Also if you are smaller than the guy you are rolling with then not starting standing is a good way not to get hurt, everything that can be said about injuries from standing is multipled if they are bigger than you are...

Interesting. I never start on my knees. NEVER. Always combat base. I'm a guard passer. As for the bottom game, a purple belt took me under his wing and instructed me to adopt the lasso and the spyder for a long time. Love it.

Great point about knee fighting... It's silly. Whenever guys try to push when we're on our knees, they usually suck and it's pretty easy to sit back right into an armbar, triangle or sweep. Starting from the knees also allows for more matches to happen at once.

It’s on you to make everything work. The game is obvious. We all have the same tape to study. We see what Marcelo did. We see what Gordon does.

I agree this is great for everyday training especially for hobbyist. But if you are competing its a totally different story.

From my very first day, I never saw the benefit of knee wrestling so I always would just pull guard

If it’s two white belts I have them start from knees if not positional. I only allow starts from standing when there’s at least one color belt

I feel like certainly at 0-6 months no problem. I agree start on your feet unless there is absolutely two many people on the mat!

I'm pretty new about 4 months in and I wish someone would have told me to go slow at first. I'm kind of a head first all in type, but don't have a problem checking my ego. Both my big toes were injured, like a turf toe type injury, and now it just sucks. I'm older as well so don't bounce back as quickly. Now I'm totally fine with guys beating me and submitting me, but I wish someone would have just told me to start like that instead of actually trying hard to survive each roll. I would have been way better off.

This is the way it should be, in my opinion. Lots of guys like starting on their butt which makes me start standing. I'm not just going to willingly accept someone else's guard game

I always start on the feet, and force my partner into it. It's more realistic and teaches them safe ways to get to the ground.

Modern no gi bjj starts on the feet and wrestling is now integrated in modern grappling. But old school gi gracie style still sits on their butts like little b$%$*$*s. Guard rarely works in no gi or mma unless you are Jeff Glover or some world champ.
@tjl4688

Wrestling is integrated? Why is almost every no-gi competitor sitting down at the start of the match, then?
@frenchmike

@@tjl4688 I am thinking of modern as in B team where wrestling is huge in their practice, or the 10p gym where i go is half wreslling and haff bjj and we start our rolls standing. Now I still think that most gym are old school and outdated for the times or mma.
