I once spray lubed my keyboard. Immediately after setting down the board to dry, I heard a banging on my door... KNOCK KNOCK I turned my head to the origin of the sound. To my surprise, the door that I had closed moments before was agape. How did I not hear my door opening? Its signature creak could probably even bring a hibernating bear out of its slumber. I paced cautiously to my door and peered outside. The dark hallway was empty. I wasn't sure if I was anxious or relieved. Perhaps the knock was in my head. I leaned against the right side of the door frame, bracing the wet hinge. Wet? Why was my door... WET? A slippery clear residue dripped down the side of my door frame. In disgust I flicked the fluid off my hands... Did someone lube my door hinges? I shut my door as I reentered my room. The door glided silently shut... Is that why I didn't hear it opening? My thoughts were left unanswered as the lights in my house all blinked off... Blackouts were unusual this time of the year, but not completely unheard of. Across the street, I could see my neighbors lights still on. I grabbed a nearby flashlight, flicked it on, and made my way to the circuit breaker box. The light barely pierced the deep shadows of the garage. The circuit breaker box was... oozing... pulsating. The same clear fluid pattered out of the edges of the box into a growing puddle on the floor. The strange fluid must have damaged the electronics within the breaker box, causing the blackout. I hesitated for a moment, but found the resolve within myself to pry further. I pulled the sleeve of my sweater over my fingertips and gripped the metal door. Gallons of the clear fluid poured out of the breaker box, saturating my sweater, splashing onto the floor. Out of surprise, I took a step back, unwittingly putting half my weight into the expanding puddle. My legs flew forward, and my head flew back, striking the cold concrete of the garage floor. I awoke to a droplet of the ichor striking my forehead. My eyes drifted up to the rafters. Two large eyes glared back down towards me through the darkness. A long grey cylindrical body stretched between the rafters. Two muscular arms stemmed from the demon's torso, fists planted on what I assumed were its hips. It smiled. It drooled.

If anyone is still considering spray lubing after watching this video, here's a much safer way to do it: Spray a bunch of that superlube into a container. Get a pippete dropper, the disposable ones will do. Apply one drop and then mash the switch to work it around the spring. Apply more as required but in my experience one is all you need, two is too much, three is ruined. Let it sit there for an hour or two. Then flip it around and let it sit there for another hour or two.

Imagine lubing 100 switches for 6 hours without a switch opener and no bag lube (opening switch with another switch's top housing, manually lubing spring) because im stupid and impatient and though ah all those youtuber said lubing switches only took 3 hour, it is an escape from reality, it was easy! but still in the end i chose better method over spray lube
@WTFA54
3 жыл бұрын
Instead of literally spraylubing i've applied a drop of ISO 100-150 super lube with a fine brush or a thin syringe to the east and west sides of a switch while depressing the stem and it seems like a much cleaner and safer method because you can actually control how much oil you're distributing in each switch. results still aren't as good as traditional lubing but it's much safer for a soldered board if you wanna risk it

If youre going to use any spray lube i'd recommend Caig DeOxIt F5 (NOT D!) or the F100 needle lube. It is specifically made not to damage plastics or electronics and not to attract dust, and is used throughout aerospace and high end audio. From what i can gather it is lithium grease based with naptha and a chlorocarbon as solvents that evaporate fully.

I spraylubed with no issues on my first board. Worked great but it's very inconsistent switch to switch. Most people use super lube. Probably best to use bike chain PTFE "dry lube" it's basically ptfe powder and alcohol. When the alcohol evaporates. You're left with only PTFE. Make for a super smooth option for those that don't want to desolder. My guess is the super lube spray can coat the backside contact leaves. Spray lubing opticals won't hurt anything unless you block the laser sensor, which can happen anyways if you are heavy handed with the lubes.

I thought about spraylubing once but in the end I chose a safer way of lubing without desoldering. Pushing down the stem of the switch with angled tweezers and lubing inside with a flat pencilbrush. I lubed the stabilizers lifting up the stems and reaching the metal clips with one of those thin interdental toothbrush. Maybe its not as good as a proper lube but the end result is totally worth it if desoldering is not an option.
