The FULL story is that DDP actually began as a prototype for an SMB sequel featuring vertical scrolling, but was shelved. Nintendo then produced the Japanese SMB2 we know as The Lost Levels. Nintendo had also made an agreement with Fuji TV to produce a game based on the mascots of Fuji's Yume Kōjō '87 event--Imajin, Lina, Mama, and Papa. They edited their old, cancelled SMB2 prototype (already containing Mario elements like Starman) and released it as Doki Doki Panic--later became the US SMB2.

@@VinchVolt No, this is not accurate. The prototype was never a SMB sequel, in fact SMB2 had already been released in Japan by the time they were working on this prototype. The prototype had vertical scrolling, but wasn't very fun, so Miyamoto suggested to make it more "Mario-like". That's it.

The original Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan (Later called Lost Levels in the U.S.) was very hard. So rather than release a frustrating mediocre sequel to the U.S. They took the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic and changed the main characters to Mario characters and released it as Super Mario Bros II in the U.S. It eventually came out in Japan as well under the name Super Mario Bros U.S.A.

Tbh, they should make a new Doki Doki Panic game and bring it to the west, it has been 30 years now. All of the characters should stick to their Japanese names (That also means naming Wart 'Mamu' in case Wart returns in the Mario series) and some of the characters like Shy Guys should be completely redesigned just so you can tell a difference from their Mario counterparts.
@VinchVolt

_Doki Doki Panic_ was only made as the result of a promotional deal with Fuji TV; the characters that appear in the game are ones that Fuji used for one of their marketing campaigns. Plus, _Doki Doki Panic_ didn't exactly sell very well from what I've heard.

Except Doki Doki Panic was a licensed game for an ad campaign that's no longer running. Even if Nintendo re-secured the rights to the characters, they'd have no reason to remake the game because A: the characters are irrelevant now, and B: it's just Super Mario Bros. 2 (before you say what I know you're gonna say, Doki Doki Panic's gameplay was based on a prototype for a Super Mario Bros. sequel, meaning that SMB2 was the real sequel from the start and not The Lost Levels). Besides, if any Mario game deserves a remake, it's Super Mario Sunshine, because it was a good game that had a lot of flaws that a remake could fix (the Blue Coin sidequest particularly comes to mind).

Huh, I wonder what's with Mario and Peach on that card image at the end. Was is just to signify collaboration between Nintendo (using their most prominent IP) and whatever owned Doki Doki? If this commercial was made before the game was repurposed into NES Mario 2, I'd like to know what that's all about (would be a lot easier to infer if I could read the surrounding text).

Doki Doki Panic was ACTUALLY supposed to be a Mario game, but then Nintendo collaborated with Fuji TV and built a new game off the new Mario game's prototype. Then the US had this game released with Mario sprites. So this actually WAS the real Mario 2, it just wasn't originally released as it.

That the Japanese thought it would be too hard for Americans is pretty insulting. Why would it be too hard for us? No matter what the reason is, it will paint us as inferior.
@AnisterStarlight
Жыл бұрын
No it was the other way around. Howard Phillips was the one who played Lost Levels first and believed it was too frustrating and not fun for American players and it would be a bad business move for the game industry in thr US which were just recovering after the crash of 83. It would not sell well in the US market. He later recalled that "few games were more stymieing. Not having fun is bad when you're a company selling fun".
