if you decode into DTS NEURAL X, it will upscale a lower channel encoded sound track into whatever your system supports. for example, a 5.1 will upscale to 7.1.4. the SURR will be bridged to the SURR BACK, HEIGHT 2 and the FRONTS will bridge to the HEIGHT 1. sounds pretty weird at first but it's an awesome experience.

We talked some previously, I think I am going to hold off until some time down the road to decide on adding Atmos or not, right now we don't have much content for it, our collection is mostly DVD with some Blu-Ray movies. We ARE buying mostly Blu-Ray and DVD combo when we buy new movies though. We don't have 4k TV or devices yet. So, I'm in a fairly small space , about 11-12' wide, approx 20' from TV wall to my couch. The room sounds good acoustically, not too many flat surfaces besides what floor is open. Ceiling is open joists and blocks of the 2md floor, rough cut lumber, exterior 3 walls are logs. Current system is a 90's Sony 5 ch reciever that "tries" to make Dolby surround out of 2ch RCA audio....it sometimes sounds ok, sometimes it is completely spastic. Speakers are Bose Acoustimass 10, also from the 90s. It is enough for the space for TV and games, but a bit lacking for music. For now, I am going to upgrade to the best Denon AVR I can get, lookimg at the AVR-S750H and X1500H, I've seen both on sales for $300-350. This would give me the option of 7.1/7.2 later, or a pair of B speakers for music. I removed my large 3 way speakers from this room due to space, and I miss that B pair.of speakers when listening to Music. After the AVR I will save for speakers, looking at a few budget options. Considering Polk T15 x4 , T30 center, and their PSW10 10" sub for $130. Later I may add to this if I find it to be good enough, to make it 7ch, or add those B speakers for music. I'd love a set of Klipsch speakers, that will have to be a dream for later, amd this setup could always be passed on to one of my 3 kids. So, do you think one of those Denon AVR units would be good enough? Should I be concerned about the HDCP 2.2 if I score an older X1500H unit? Lastly, do you think those Polk speakers would be a decent setup for now, and an upgrade from these tiny Bose speakers and the Acoustimass bass module? Can you recommend a pair of bookshelf speakers bigger than the Polk T15, but smaller than a set that had 12" woofers, for adding warmth and quality when listening to music, preferably not SUPER expensive and something that wouldn't be too big to be mountable to the wall? ( a can fab some sort of mount/shelf, and it is a fairly solid wall as far.as holding weight, it is logs) Thanks for your videos! Sorry about the length of this post, hopefully that will help you to be able to understand my situation better. Looking forward to any advice, and to watching more videos. Thanks again.

Atmos isn't just about the height channel. It also allows non-channel-restricted experiences. Dolby atmos works a lot more like games have worked for decades. Dolby atmos defines a 3D listening environment, and maps sounds within that environment, and then mathematically determines which speaker(s) to play them on/in and at what amplitude. This allows a far better listening experience as, not only is it more granular than just have 7 distinct listening sources, but also facilitating unique room designs to be accounted for, given proper receiver configuration. For example, if you have an elongated living room and decided to set your speakers up in such an elongated fashion, you can configure your receiver to account for this, and atmos facilitates a better compensation for this. Further, not every room needs that height channel. Smaller rooms will likely have too many reflections to reasonably utilize those height channels. It will only be in more isolated sounds that these height channels will be audible.

Ive been working on saving $ and finding the right sound for my setup. I currently have a 7.4 with assistance of mini-dsp. At the time, my plan was to get the best sound during the Dolby True HD/ DTS master era right before the new codecs became mainstream. I haven't experienced Atmos yet, but I'm curious what would be the best ROI in terms of sound quality. Atmos or upgrading to older AV tech that offer 11 or 12 channels. I know sound is subjective, but if anyone had the option to have either Atmos 5.2.4 vs 11/12.4 which would you chose??

Go for the Dolby Atmos set up. When it comes to movie audio encoding there are generally only the following formats: - 2/ 2.1 channel stereo (2 or 3 discrete channels) - Dolby digital 5.1 (six discrete channels) - Dolby Atmos/DTS X (between 8 [5.1.2] and 13 [7.2.4] discrete channels) Any receiver that has more than a 5.1 set up and is not certified Atmos or DTSX is ‘faking’ the extra speakers using the processing within the amplifier to convert the 5 channels of Dolby digital into 7, or 9, or 11. Movies were never encoded with more than a 5.1 mix until Atmos and DTS X came along.

@Youthman

My preference is to have (4) overhead speakers. With only one pair of Atmos speakers, you are unable to have objects pan from the front to the back in your height channels. Dolby Atmos is all about having proper angles. When possible, installing Atmos speakers on the ceiling will provide better separation between your bed layer and the Atmos speakers. some important factors to consider with DOLBY ATMOS.. 1. consider the room size and dimensions.. if it's a smallish room 10ft x 10ft 5.1.2 would be more than sufficient.. 2. Not everybody can cut holes into their ceiling to fit overhead speakers.. especially if you're renting that home.. In those situations fitting height speakers would be best (speakers on or close to the wall). 3. if u don't wanna drill holes into the wall (due to been a rental home). Then put ear level speakers (front stereo & rear surrounds) on speaker stands. 4. buy acoustic foam tiles and position them behind speakers.. that way you'll not bother neighbours..5. A tip re height speakers.. you can use normal bookshelf speakersif you do.. turn them upside down so the tweeter is on the bottom.. then place on speaker brackets.. angling the speaker down aimed at the viewing position.. a handy way to do that is sit down on your chosen chair / sofa.. then hold a torch (flashlight) to the side of your ear then point the light at the spot you want the sound to come from. Mark it with some tape.. Then drill a hole for the speaker bracket.. if you intend to mount the speakers.. Do the same technique with allthe other ear level speakers Front stereo and rear surrounds.. Then you'll get the optimum sound quality as they'll be posistioned where they should be.

Just a little clarification. There’s no such a thing as “Dolby Atmos Speakers”. Dolby Atmos is a Dolby Laboratories Codec. A Dolby Atmos Soundtrack uses two layers of properly placed speakers. Usually , for home theaters, it is 7 ear level and a recommended minimum 4 above ear level. Dolby Cinemas go way bigger than that. When playing a Dolby Atmos Soundtrack at home, some will utilize your base layer much more than your overhead. It doesn’t mean it is not Dolby Atmos. Just means the sound mix doesn’t contain much information for the overhead speakers. You’re still playing and listening to Dolby Atmos. Please try Fury for your next “Atmos brings down your house experience.” Thank you for the new video.

You are correct but we do often refer to in ceiling speakers as the “Atmos” speakers, since Atmos adds the height element Fury is a fantastic movie. Not sure I recall too much overhead speakers being engaged but it’s been awhile.

Youthman You’re correct. I’ve heard that from a few A/V heads. I might be nitpicking but believe we should spread correct information when trying to educate the public at large. Case in point, you’d never say “My DTS:X Speakers”. DTS:X is just another immersive codec. Please re-watch Fury. Absolutely amazing overheads, imaging, panning, and discrete sounds. Another two great examples are A Quiet Place(almost no overhead, but the panning will give you goosebumps) and Marrowbone(another one with almost zero overhead activity, but amazing ATMOSpherics-pun intended).

Gene (audioholics) did a video with Patrick schappert on immersive audio. Basically patrick felt dolby atmos lets a lot of opportunities for mixing in content on height channels slip by. He said the auro 3d upmixer does a better job....in a nutshell. From the little I've heard it seems people in general are more satisfied with aura 3d. I trust you and found the video very helpful. Thanks!

I made a video as well with just the Atmos channels playing and I to commented throughout the movie demo they were opportunities that Atmos could have had some great affects there but they missed it. The reality is they can only do so much in a movie. I have a friend that has a complete oral 3-D set up and it sounds fantastic as well. I’m not certain that one format is better than the other, this video was just focusing on my set up that is Dolby Atmos and I’m extremely pleased with how it sounds

@@Youthman I would prefer the mixes were better in ATMOS for example.. if the character in a scene was in a room and there's various levels of floors.. and someone is shooting down from an upper level.. then only the sound from that upper level should come from that height speaker.. until it reaches the characher on the ground.. then we hear it from out sound speakers at ear level.. seconds later.. If they did that in movies and TV and games.. Then we'd get an accurate sense of sound.

I've been surprised to hear how Atmos is remastered in older movies (or also DTS:X). Case in point, Apollo 13: the new 4K movie has some better ambient noises (IE scenes with offices, I heard typewriter sounds all around me). Music also seemed nicer and more immersive (though clearly in front). Just FYI: Atmos is actually both channel based and object based (it has a bed of 9.1 channels and 118 objects). This was made a standard to be backward compliant with older surround systems and for sound engineers to mix with traditional 2 axis pans that also adds a 3rd axis height (and that objects help localize sounds with different systems that can have many speakers in an array). Lastly, I've subscribed to Disney+....I've also found as other reviews have said: Disney seems to master audio at a lower audio level: I have to raise volume: but am enjoying the fact that I'm finding many older movies now remastered in Dolby Vision and Atmos!

If you are watching movies on a 4K player, it sends the sound to your AVR and the video to your TV. If you have a smart TV, most apps do not support Atmos. An Nvidia Shield and AppleTV 4K does support Atmos

You mentioned level matching all of your speakers. Isn't that what you're doing when you use room correction? I mean, I used Audessy room correction, and after running it I found that most of my speakers were very close to each other, level wise--within about 0.5 to 1 dB (referring like to like). I went with in ceiling speakers, and I love it. Sometimes the effect is very subtle, but that's the idea. It's not supposed to blare at you, it's supposed to add to the experience.

Hi Robert, did you use an SPL meter to see if your speakers were playing the same volume or are you just looking at the levels in your receiver?
@Bateman61405
4 жыл бұрын
Robert Heidt u should always check the levels with an SPL meter after you run auto calibration. Some like the surrounds turned up a little bit or the atmos channels turned up a bit more than the auto calibration sets it. Subwoofer trim level is usually set too low IMO so I always up it a few dB to my taste. Auto calibration shouldn’t be a set it forget it thing. It gets u like 70% there than u have to fine tune it to ur preference

Hey youthman, you inspired me to make my own cinema room, so I've been through different setups and currently at a nice 5.1 setup. I'm looking at upgrading and wanted to go down the Atmos root. So, I decided to experience this at a new local Dolby Cinema with the new Star wars movie....I can only say that I left a little disappointed.... film was ok, Dolby vision was ok, but the sound wasn't amazing. The demo before the film was great, but the movie experience left me questioning the need to upgrade to Atmos. Tell me youthman, what does a home Atmos setup compare to a Dolby cinema experience if you have ever been?
