to be honest in Brazil the voice of the dog in the first movie was done by a famous comedian that is not a voice actor, and it is the most memorable thing in that movie, also the tiger had the voice of homer Simpson, my point is, sometimes the voice works for the best, but when they put someone to say one line, just so we go "look its that famous guy" it is bad in the original version, and worse when translated to other languages because they will not have the voice of the famous person anymore, and sometimes the famous person is not even famous elsewhere and we have to replace with one of our own famous person and change the entire joke

I thought the dragon having a set of bagpipes and a suit of armor up stuck in her butt was pretty funny. Couldn't help but notice that these items looked VERY clean. Like dragon spit is all sticky and orange but dragon poop? Must be like cotton balls or something because the stuff that came out that anus was immaculate. The armor was actually shiny! And the cloth on the bagpipes wasn't even wet. Obviously, the studio censors told the director: fart jokes are fine, but feces are the line! It's probably a studio rule: Do not cross the Poop Line.

I shall further explain Doctor Dolittle: The Doctor Dolittle books were a popular series of children's books from the 1920s by Hugh Lofting. It was made into a famously troubled musical starring Rex Harrison. The movie's production was so troubled it nearly led to the end of the Hollywood musical. The thing about the original books is that they're very much a product of the attitudes of the time, to the point of including a lot of old-timey racism (not entirely uncommon with older books. The Mary Poppins books have the same problem). This is probably why the makers of the Eddie Murphy Dolittle movies chose to chuck everything but the "talks to animals" bit. Heirs to Lofting's estate have tried to amend and rewrite the books to make them more suited to modern audiences, but there's only so much they can do. It does bring up the question of how to approach material that has interesting ideas (adventuresome doctor who talks to animals) but otherwise problematic content (old-fashioned racism).

We went with our kids to a dutch translated version in 4dx. Which had fewer puns ofcourse, because they don't always translate well. The kids liked the film, but they're 6 and 4 and 4dx is exciting, us adults were going through the same emotions you were having unfortunately. You described it very well, like you can see the potential but the dragon scene I could've done without. I do think it's a fun film for kids though, they seemed to have enjoyed it.

Yup. Ramius and Putin, the Kommissar, are chatting initially in Russian about the Bible, Putin says "Armageddon", which sounds the same in English and Russian, then they transition fully into English for the rest of the movie. Then Ramius kills Putin.

Doctor Dolittle is a children's book series, written by Hugh Lofting. That's probably why the animated sequence that looked like a book happened. Disney animated movies used to do that - Sleeping Beauty, Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, Cinderella, Snow White, etc.

I mean, in some convoluted way you could say we have come full circle from RDJ's Sherlock, which spawned the mess that is 'holmes & watson' and now we get RDJ in a movie that might well be the latter's writer's take on Dolittle by the sound of it

The most important fix for this movie needs to be during the dragon scene. Imagine if, instead of fecal blockage, the dragon was in pain because she was having difficulties delivering an egg. Or, to keep RDJ from having to stick his hands in a dragon’s private areas, imagine if the dragon was protecting her sick child, and RDJ was able to save the baby’s life. Either way, the dragon would be overcome with gratitude for the ones who saved her child’s life & gift them the Maguffin fruit as a reward.

I understand that if you've only seen the Eddie Murphy Dolittle movies, them not being related doesn't make sense. The original story (1920), though, states that talking to animals is a learned skill. This is also brought up in the Rex Harrison version (1967), which is the version I grew up with. Stubbins, in the Rex Harrison version, WAS learning to talk to animals with Dolittle as his teacher, but it's only mentioned once and is never brought up again.
