Oh the fond memories. Back when I was 10 years old in 1968, I answered an ad in the back of a comic book to sell seeds for the American Seed Company (I also sold greetings cards). I lived in rural Richland County Ohio, and rode my bike many miles taking orders for seeds, sending in the money and delivering the seeds when I got them. I had many repeat customers and no complaints about the seeds I sold. I made enough money to buy my own school clothes and a new bicycle. I'm looking forward to watching the progress of your experiment.

I learned this lesson for myself. I bought expensive seeds from seed catalogs my first year gardening (about 5 years ago). I was in dollar store and noticed 4/$1 seed for 75% off so really just pennies per package. I saved them and planted the following season. I had great success. Now that is what I do every year. I keep the seeds in an airtight container and store in a cool, dark place. My neighbors ask me all the time about how I grow such a great garden (all experienced gardeners), I have won many ribbons at the local fair for my produce and flowers, produced and preserved a lot of food. Interestingly, the varieties sold are tried and true, popular types. I still buy from seed catalogs for unusual types but the majority of my seeds come from Dollar General at the end of the season

Burpee buys many seeds indirectly from Monsanto! I am now 61 years old and I remember when I was about 10 years old ordering the box of seeds from the American Seed Company from an ad in my comic books. They would trust me and send me a $15 box of seed packets to sell door to door and to friends and family. If I recall I would keep $7.50 and send them back $7.50 (in change in a envelope with a 2 cent stamp). I also saw their seeds in the Dollar Tree and it brought a few great memories. They were a great company and I have always had fond memories of this wonderful company. I have been a entrepreneur all of my life and I credit part of that to my childhood experiences with selling seeds and American Greeting cards from comic books. Happy gardening.

@@debbiecummings3657 actually, if you are going for adaptation, you should use hybrids and regularly cross them. Hybrids have much more genetic variability which means both plants that grow much better and much worst in your location. Save seeds from the best plants and you'll eventually create a new variety that is specifically adapted to your environment. Edit: don't use hybrids from 2 different species though (happens sometimes with peppers and very often with strawberries) they might produce infertile seeds, making you lose out on a whole season of seed saving.

I love the dollar store brands for seeds! Treat them the same and they usually come out the same as the same from the other brand (blue lake bush beans for example). And most gardeners don’t need the larger quantity of seeds. So it is often a better decision to purchase the dollar store brand. Also. To deter the squirrels from the garden, build frames from 2x4x10s and cover them in chicken wire. Make yourself a door so you can get in. Not the cheapest of projects for tall or wide plants, but you can use 2x1x8s for lettuces.

I buy most of my seeds from the dollar store for a quarter a packet. I don't really have a green thumb, but I do get good results from these seeds. I just picked about a pound and a half of green beans from the garden yesterday. I washed, blanched, and stored them in the freezer in plastic bags with zipper closures. They are ready to go when I decide to cook them. My garden also has cucumbers, carrots, peas, radishes, and other veggies as well. My container garden consists of rosemary, basil, thyme, dill, and other herbs. (These are ALL dollar store seeds .... very affordable). My daughter loves basil butter for her baked potato, so I usually make basil butter in the food processor and use a stainless steel melon baller to shape the butter into individual servings and freeze them in plastic bags with zipper closures. The flower garden also fares well with seeds from the dollar store and my pocketbook loves the price.

Cheap seeds are generally ok unless... You want a special type of plant(hybrids, heirlooms, etc), you need more seeds since the cheap ones usually have less but for most people that doesn't mean anything, hard to grow seeds like anything that requires stratification, scaring, soaking, and some kind of religious ritual to have decent germination rates I would stick with a brand you know is going to work. The last one being seeds that take forever to germinate. Waiting a month to find out a seed sucks isn't fun.

For general, low income or beginning gardeners, I would absolutely recommend the Dollar Tree seeds as an excellent value for the money. As you become more experienced, or have specific types of crops you want, I would look at more specialized varieties, such as are carried from PineTree Seeds, or Bakers Creek. There you will find: edible podded peas; burpless or pickling cucumbers; colored carrots; perennial veggies (cardoons, cutting celery); and heirloom, open pollinated vegetables. So each have their benefits, and selection. Mostly, I hope everybody tries to grow something and has fun doing it.

Something else I love about this is that it will hopefully urge more people to start from seed as opposed to starter plants that come from any place other than actual hortoculturists. I discovered last year that wet-rot aka blight aka *insert name of choice* that caused The Great Famine in the mid 1800s in Ireland not only still exists but is running rampant in shipping containers that starter plants are moved around the US (and maybe further; not sure on that part). Imagine the shock on my Irish American face when I discovered it was blasted blight that killed my garden last year. Which reminds me, if I want seedlings to plant I need to get a movie on! Comparing different varieties of the same species already makes the findings pretty questionable. But the difference between cheap vs expensive(if you aren't getting ripped off) seeds is gentics, gmo vs non-gmo, organic vs non-organic, quality of the parent plant the seeds came from(when comparing the same variety), resistance to drought, fungi, disease, & pests, aswell as tolerance of cold/hot weather, & too much sun/shade. Plus some other things. The best places to buy seeds is from a catalog/online store like Bakers Creek, some other seed company I can't remember the name of because it's 3:18am, or even gardening KZitemrs who have their own stores.

The Dollar tree yellow beans that I have got have 70 % less seeds then the Burpee but I paid .25 per pack. The seed quantity is inconsistent. Planted 2 rows of each side by side. Successful germination was identical. The dollar tree seeds actually outproduced the Burpee for some reason. Even with the less seeds per bag. $1 of seeds from dollar tree was more seeds than the $ 2.79 bag of Burpee.

I myself am starting a garden - Raise Bed this year, I have a nice assortment of $1Tree Seeds I have been gathering each time I stop in. I had set up a group of Herbs-Dill, Parsley and Thyme in small containers to get started about two months ago ( for Florida that was an Ideal time to start indoor plants) Here it is now mid APRIL and still nothing has sprouted. I have not had One seed from those $1Tree packets sprout. :-( I will attempt to plant other seeds and see if they will take. Otherwise I may need to go and harvest seeds from the plants themselves. Which actually works out best- 99% of the time :-)

Ok Parris, "Mouthy Martha" here again, and i'm forced to weigh in on this subject as it is one that I've done lots of research in myself. Now, I've ordered seeds from all the more famous and high end seed companies, and I have also ordered from a few you tuber's that have gardening and seed growing how to's and the like. I have spent from .25 to 6.99 per pack depending on the company. I personally have had MUCH better results with the seeds from Dollar seed.com, rather than anywhere else. I don't know what it is about their seeds but they always germinate for me and grow into very robust plants and delicious veggies! As the name states it is 90% of the seeds are $1 each but you will also catch a few that are on sale at less than that price. I think I've bought just about every single veggie except for artichokes and asparagus, simply because I must use containers to garden in and those either take just too long or are too big for the containers that I am able to work with (wheelchair bound). Now, I don't usually get as many seeds in a single packet of the dollar seeds, but then again, I don't plant a ton of veggies and so I don't need alot. Now, with other companies you will usually get a few more seeds, and also usually can choose from much more appetizing seeds variety names, etc....... I have also regrown lots of my veggies from the store bought ones that I've saved the end pieces such as romaine lettuces, green onions, yellow Spanish onions, etc and also from saving seeds of the various fruits and veggies I have bought. I have heard all the rumors from everyone saying that you cannot grow peppers, etc from store bought foods, but I'm here to tell you that's not true. I do NOT do anything special, nor can I buy multiple amendments and fancy schmancy additives for my soil, I just use good old miracle gro or else whatever is on sale and is not too woody. It works fine for me, and although it's not ORGANIC, I'm sorry but I just don't really care. I'm 61 and have lived my life full of pesticides and all kinds of boxed preservatives in foods since I was a kid and if it hasn't killed me yet, I figure so what at this stage. Yes, I'm an old stubborn booger, so yeah I know, I'm not politically correct nor do I really care to be. I say what I mean and don't say hateful stuff so I guess i'm good in that respect. Anyhow, as I'm sure you will see once you harvest your veggies, you will be pleasantly surprised with the food you get from the cheap seeds from American/Americana (dollar store seeds) as I've used those as well and been very happy.

re: Dollar Seed.com - I have purchased many seeds from Dollar Seed with excellent results. The only time I had any problem was with some onion seeds that didn't germinate for me. Called them and talked to Dave, and he sent me replacement seeds AND four extra packs of various onion seeds to try. I received the new seeds in less than a week, all had good germination. This is a great small company and I highly recommend them!

When I lived in my previous home, I had hassles with squirrels digging up and stealing my seeds before they could germinate. If you have that trouble as well, you could try germinating your seeds indoors instead, inside of a seedling tray. You'd need a covered seedling tray and Jiffy seed starting mix (potting soil). Once the seeds germinate and have sprouted, then you can transplant the seedlings into your garden outside. I've used seeds from Burpee, American Seed, Ferry-Morse and even seeds I had gathered from fresh vegetables and some sprouted and some didn't with each brand. Having a good quality soil helps and fresher seeds will be more likely to germinate so if your seeds packets are old you might find the seeds didn't germinate. I think that Burpee might just have fresher seeds or better quality seeds, as most all of the ones I planted from their brand easily germinated but I had less success with seeds from the other two brands. Last year, I had some beautiful zinnia though, that sprouted from American Seed boxed seed mix that I had got on clearance the year before at Dollar General.

Don't know if it's been pointed out here yet, but in the video he used Burpee (hybrid) seed, and American (dollar store) was Hale's best, which is not a hybrid. There is often a big difference between yield, taste, foliage, ect. between cultivars. If one is making a comparison, the cultivars need to be the same, otherwise you're comparing apples to oranges. One other thing: Hales best is an heirloom variety, and all heirloom varieties will grow true to original. Hybrid seeds are a cross, and will revert to one parent or the other. Heirloom seeds can be saved and used over year after year, and you don't even have to pay Dollar Store price!

I've had mixed results with the 20¢ American seed packets at Walmart. I think its better to stick with the more expensive seeds like Ferry-Morse, Burpee, etc. There's nothing more frustrating than putting the effort into planting the seeds (per the directions) and then nothing germinates. Well, that cliff-hanger made me subscribe! My results with Brecks flower bulbs are A LOT better than my results with supermarket brand bulbs. Ocean State Job Lot has some decent flower bulbs, considerably less expensive but not as vigorous as Brecks bulbs. I have had decent vegetable gardens in the distant past, but never on this property. We have so much wildlife here (bears, deer, ground hogs, rabbits, foxes, mice, chipmunks, small birds, owls, squirrels, etc, etc) that I end up feeding them, not us. I am also trying to rejuvenate a half-dead tall bush blueberry patch and propagate some old roses from down the road.

I farm with my father. We raise genetic modified corn and beans. As far as I know this is different from the breeding used in the hybrids. People have been selectively breeding crops forever(think bush tomatoes farmers noticed dwarf plants in the fields, and in breeding or keeping that specific trait, it was an advantage for farmers who wanted bushy or what is labeled as determined plants as they don’t need trellising) The only purpose for genetically modifying a specific breed are to resist killing a crop when spraying for weeds with glyphosate. I find the arguments over this interesting. Not many crop production varieties are modified using gmo. It is completely unnecessary to genetically alter garden seed as only large scale production makes this a necessity. Also wheat has not been genetically modified, just an FYI. Genetic modification is a very costly business for both growers and manufacturers alike. It is confusing and that is why many don’t understand how genetic modification and high breeding are different, but they are.

Worked as a merchandiser for a seed company and the cheaper packs ARE older seeds. The higher end brands sell their seeds to a lower end brand at year end your misconception is you are interpreting the pack date as freshness date. Yes they were packed for this year in that packaging but the seeds will be at least a year old and maybe longer.
@mothman-jz8ug

You sure wouldn't want old seed. Of course, corn found in containers in Indian burial mounds were planted and the germinated and grew. I have planted seeds which were at least 50 years old, and they did as well as the ones you buy (well, better germination than most commercial seeds, but no biggie) but we are told it is vital to get seeds for the current year. Why ya think that is?

If you sprinkle ground cayenne papper around the perimeter of your garden or wherever you don't want squirrels (or any other animal) to gather, they will avoid the area. Sprinkle again after it rains. Does not bother birds, so you can sprinkle it into the bird seeds to keep away the squirrels.

Sometimes intensive planting, as in Square Foot Gardening, and companion planting can limit destruction from bugs and maybe even squirrels, not sure. But planting way too much allows for squirrels, bugs and rabbits to get theirs and for us to get what we need. I think potential gardeners get discouraged fighting nature, and figure it's all too much work. But heavy mulching reduces or eliminates watering and weeding, bird netting can keep the birds and squirrels from being too destructive, and if your soil is good, you don't have to till, just plant. Lay down mulch on each side of the seed rows to keep weeds down, and if they come up, pull and use as mulch. If your soil is really bad, just plant fruit trees. Much easier to tend and they take up no real space on the ground. I just put in four fig trees from Lowes at $10 each. They grow 20-30 feet sometimes. Gardening doesn't get much easier than that.

The burpee seeds are more expensive because they are a hybrid variety. They need to cross pollinate two very specific varieties to make the seeds, which is of course more difficult and expensive.
