Thanks for the tip. I have a Tyco GG1 from the early 80's that had the traction tires break apart. I used strips of electrician's tape but that was a labour intensive fix with rather bumpy results. Then I saw your video. I got some plumbing 0-rings from Canadian Tire. I had to grow some extra fingers to get them on, but now they are on and the engine works like new. No derailing over switches either.

I tried out using some dental elastics for traction tires on an AHM C-Liner that was given to me, they seem to work quite well! I crammed two (side by side) on each wheel which is a little oversize, but just one seems like too little. I may see if I can cut them down to half-thickness and play around with a full width and half width elastic on each traction flange. They're dirt cheap, very stretchy, and very grippy, so I think they were worth getting for the various experimental uses I have in mind for them!

A cheaper and more durable alternative to traction tires is something called Bullfrog Snot. It might have weird name, but it makes trains pull much more and go up much more steep grades. Bullfrog Snot is basically a greenish, glue like substance that you apply to your train wheels. Once it dries, it becomes transparent. It works for trains which weren’t even designed for traction tires, and it doesn’t negatively affect the conductivity of the wheels. A canister of it costs around $25 USD, and it can be used for many locomotives.

When you started the locomotive with the "traction tires" on, it was almost like it threw itself into Run 8 multiplied by 18 or something judging by the noise, who needs sound when you have old motors in Trix, Riverossi, Mantua, Etc.

O-Rings have been the goto for traction tires for years, decades even. You can also try that green snot stuff made for this purpose, my friend used it on an old life-like and it worked beautifully but didn't last as long as the O-ring did. Just have to find those really thin ones so they don't raise the truck off the track too much or you'll go Superman right off the bend ;) Update: Bullfrog Snot is the product name. $25 a bottle but will last you for ages and many applications.

Great video im gonna try this .Im having problems with2 of my life like gp38s. They run extremely well but they've gotten to where they dont pull as good as before i figured out that it was the traction tires . i noticed also if i put just a tiny bit of weight on the front it helps but not enough.i like to pull 15 to 25 cars at a time so i defently need to figure something out. Thanks !

I have a tyco ho gauge steam engine that won't run on the track. If I hook up a 9 volt battery to it, it runs nicely. What could be the issue? I saw a video where you were able to get one working. I am a newbie, not afraid to admit even at my age. Bought track and engines at a yard sale for my grandson. He really likes the steam type engines. Help please. Lee

Oh, come on! One thing I like most about my North American locomotives is that they don't have these blo**y traction tires. I hate traction tires and my solution for them , in my European locomotives is to get rid off them at any cost. Traction tires do litter the track, are bad for electrical conductivity, and over time crystallize and break. Everyone wants to get rid of them and you want to put them on? How myths fall...
